Exactly my point. This whole site strikes me as programmer hubris.
Is HealthSherpa really helping or are they just capitalizing on the huge IT/PR snafu that is healthcare.gov?
I mean, isn't it entirely fucked up that HealthSherpa directs me to "Call Western at (888) 227-5942" without knowing that I'm eligible for government assistance?
edit: a word
And in the context of the post it's not much better. You know where I like to work? From the deck of a cruise ship! No shit, I'd love to be on a cruise ship too.
"You know where I like to code? From the beaches of Aruba!" Followed up by a link to an Aruba travel deals site. No.
Extended rant: my frustration equally applies to Tynan's post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6697416 - nothing personal per se, save for the obviousness of the article I ham-handedly parodied above.
These class of ex post facto blog posts authored solely for self promotion seem like the bread and butter of HN. He build a website to sell cruise ship deals and now he _really_ wants everyone to know how great it is to [insert relevant occupation] from the deck of a cruise ship.
I really need to start thinking of HN as "Hustler News" instead of "Hacker News" I think it'd alleviate the cognitive dissonance I got going on.
2) Follow up with link to the website you built to find cruise deals.
3) Profit.
How much are you making off this, Kirubakaran?
At least I hope.
I guess.

<needshelp56> Hi, thanks for listening....I feel like my life is in shambles...
<needshelp56> i just...I just need someone to talk to...
<Twogirlssevencups> lol kil urselfThe laws this thread contends they're violating strike me as falling into the category of public safety, e.g. proper labeling of spirits, Department of Health guidelines (http://blog.speakeasy.is/day/2013/07/23), etc. Viscerally, these don't strike me as the type of laws we want to championing start-ups into breaking.
But fuck laws, right? What really kills me about these guys is that they represent the cancer that is killing HN - all hustle, no authenticity. Instead of coordinating with local distilleries for a co-promotion event they fill Ikea bottles with "a cheap, mass-produced Russian vodka" and stick a fake label on the side. This is the definition of "grey-hat SEO 'growth hackers.'"
(Except with the department of health, hah!)"
lolwut. I wonder how many people are submitting this blog post to ATFtips@atf.gov just for the lulz.
edit: I'd be more interested in how you're using ifttt, pinboard, and wordpress to generate the site.
Oh wait, no? Well, his twitter links to some Magic the Gathering site. Oh, he's a "Product Quality Associate" at Google (thanks LinkedIn!)
Wait, why do I care?
Ha! So much for Google setting their own precedent on quality.
Google is shooting themselves in the foot appealing to reviewer's worst sense of self-importance. Concierge service and complementary Champagne?
And these reviews! They're so painfully rote: wifi-bluetooth-battery-life-sucks-now-you-can-check-your-email-in-the-middle-of-a-conversation-needs-more-iterations-here-are-some-shitty-pictures-of-a-buffet.
Is this really the future?
Step 1: Start a successful business.
Step 2: Use the money from step one to start your really successful business.
Step 3: Profit
And the FTC policing COPPA isn't really new either: https://www.google.com/search?q=coppa+violation+cases
Linked to a page which displays one of four random mp4s which refreshes once every thirty seconds via a meta refresh.
Magic!
Your second point sounds purely anecdotal. My experience has shown just the opposite; older developers with families are much more committed because...well...they have families to support.
The author just isn't interested in working at a start-up, but god forbid he receive a recruiting email from one.
I'd take a different tack: your early twenties is a perfect fucking time to try working a start up. No mortgage, no kids; why not take the risk?
Instead you should what...take a 9-5 so you can have a life outside of work, so you can work on your side project instead of working at a start up.
Also, attending conferences isn't "professional development."
And don't get me started on actually trying to navigate these group buying offers. Every time I've tried to redeem one you're shunted off to some obscure buy flow: "Oh, you'll need to talk to our corporate accounts representative, do you have your company contract id?"
And to get a little meta here for a second: how lazy is ez-pr.com that they just link to their half-assed Google Spreadsheet. Or for that matter, how lazy is Business Insider that they just regurgitate this PR crap. And why are we even linking to this low-effort content?
