dekerta··on I built a $5k Raspberry Pi server (yes, it's ridiculous)
I think people's eyes are just naturally drawn to faces, so more people end up seeing the thumbnail among the grid of other videos, and are more likely to watch the it as a result
dekerta··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
You're living in a bubble if you think that people only support vaccines because of Mandates. Even in America, which is one of the more vaccine hesitant countries, the majority of adults got the vaccine long before any mandates were introduced
dekerta··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
The person I was replying to was talking about dislikes on the YouTube of a 'particular political party'. That's what I was referring to
dekerta··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
Most pro-vaccine videos are also massively disliked on YouTube, despite the fact that the vast majority of people support vaccines.

I'm guessing you're a conservative, and you don't want dislikes to go away because you think it's great that pro-democrat videos get downvoted, but you can't base real public opinion on YouTube dislikes. It's massively astroturfed

dekerta··on Ford's $3900 electric crate motor and F-100 concept
Cool product, but that website sucks. I can't read the paragraph half-way down the landing page because their shitty custom scrolling handler keeps skipping past it.

Why do some webdevs think they need to re-invent scrolling?

dekerta··on TypeScript: Control flow analysis for destructured discriminated unions
Thanks for the explanation. I've been programming for many years, and your examples make total sense to me, but reading sentences like "Control flow analysis for destructured discriminated unions" make me feel like a total impostor
dekerta··on Microsoft Edge GA on Linux
A few years ago, I was using Windows 10 and a huge ad banner for OneDrive appeared in the file explorer. That was the final straw for me, and it's the reason I finally switched over to Linux 100% full time
dekerta··on Astronomers witnessed the death of a star as it happened
Here is all I could find:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB2QQyEyF5k

The video description says that the timelapse was taken over the course of a year

dekerta··on Malwarebytes' privacy VPN is Mullvad in a shady trenchcoat
The network tab in the browser's dev tools will show you all of the resources loaded, including shady fake gifs
dekerta··on Twitch source code and customer data has reportedly been leaked
Your analogy would be more accurate if the bridges were constantly being blown up by terrorists. Designing perfectly secure online systems is very hard (if not impossible). Software is very complex, and people are trying to break in constantly. It only takes one person to get lucky or find a vulnerability
dekerta··on Facebook-owned sites were down
There are plenty of ways to communicate with friends and family. If Facebook is down long enough, many people will just move to something else. (And I hope they do)
dekerta··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
I mean, maybe you like 4chan, but I think the majority of people don't see that site as a glowing example of what online communities should want to be
dekerta··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
I didn't realise that a few regions banning plastic straws is literally the only thing the entire planet has done to combat climate change
dekerta··on Tether is under undisclosed SEC investigation, FOIA blocked
Are you thinking of something like a short squeeze? That only happens because shorts would be forced to buy shares to cover their positions. I don't see how that would apply here. Who's forced to buy people's tether if the price goes to zero? In reality, everyone who holds tether would just be screwed. Their imaginary token would be worth nothing and they wouldn't be able to exchange them for anything. The value would just disappear in to the air
dekerta··on Experiments on a $50 DIY air purifier (2020)
You can find activated carbon filters online (and in many stores). Maybe that would work for a DIY solution? https://www.amazon.com/s?k=activated+carbon+air+filter
dekerta··on Windows 11 still doesn't understand our complex lives – and it hurts
> In fairness, simultaneous use of multiple IDs is rarely handled well by modern UI'd desktops and remote services. All systems assume you have one ID, and if you have the temerity to want more, then you must log out and log back in again, an idea unchanged since mainframes stalked the earth.

Slack handles multiple IDs flawlessly IMO

dekerta··on The Rustonomicon
What a great name
dekerta··on Reddit Outage
https://i.reddit.com/ still works. It's astonishing how much faster it is than the 'modern' version of Reddit also
dekerta··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
I feel like most of the people responding to your comment have missed the joke...
dekerta··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
Teams definitely feels like it was rushed to market to take advantage of the pandemic. I'm really sad our company moved us from Slack to Teams. It's so much worse, especially on Linux
dekerta··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
As crazy as that would be, it's actually a much better solution. Heck, it would even be better if they wanted to ban all images on the internet.

But of course, banning encryption isn't actually about protecting children

dekerta··on Time flies in Google Earth’s biggest update in years
Hasn't this tool been available at https://earthengine.google.com/timelapse/ for several years now?
dekerta··on Surface Laptop 4
My thoughts exactly. That dedicated Teams button won't age well
dekerta··on Use console.log() like a pro (2020)
You could do console.table({x, y}) if you really want to see them initially expanded
dekerta··on Figma and Canva are taking on Adobe and winning
Yes it runs fine on Windows 10. Version 4 came out in 2012. Old, but not ancient by any means.

Edit: I mispoke, I'm using version 4.4.1. Not sure, how different that is from 4.0

dekerta··on Figma and Canva are taking on Adobe and winning
+1 for Affinity Designer. I was stuck on an old version of Adobe Fireworks for years because I refused to give in to their SaaS model. The Affinity suite has been worth every penny, and I actually own the software, which is great
dekerta··on Figma and Canva are taking on Adobe and winning
That's fair, but it's terrible for people like me. I hate not being able to own my desktop software.

I'm a hobbyist photographer, and I use Lightroom quite a bit. I purchased Lightroom 4.0 back in 2013, and it has been worth every penny, but now I'm stuck on version 4.0 forever because I refuse to pay a never-ending monthly fee for software that I use as an amateur.

I use Darktable now. It's an excellent open-source competitor, but it's not as good as Lightroom. I would gladly pay a few hundred dollars to buy a perpetual license for a new version.

dekerta··on You Don't Need a GUI
No kidding. I laughed at this part: "STOP DOUBLE CLICKING ON A FILE " "Instead type '$ xdg-open file'"

Yeah, because that's way faster and more convenient than double clicking on an icon.

This one is great too: Don't open the file explorer! Instead you should type "find . -print | sed -e 's;[^/]*/;|____;g;s;____|; |;g'"

Seriously?

dekerta··on Facebook Down?
Maybe you broke Facebook
