dejawu··on Ignore the haters, and other lessons learned from creating JSON5
I'm kind of appalled that the Hashicorp guy went that far to put someone down for just building something they found useful to themselves. What a great way to discourage someone from expressing themselves creatively. Glad Aseem carried on regardless.
dejawu··on Ask HN: What's up with these DoorDash dark patterns?
That's really interesting... Do the actual real-life restaurants appear related?

I just realized this screenshot is actually from GrubHub which I don't use anymore, so I'm not able to go back and check for further details.

dejawu··on Ask HN: What's up with these DoorDash dark patterns?
It's insane. I once found a restaurant that had ghost kitchen'd itself EIGHTEEN times:

Some of the name variations are pretty funny though.

dejawu··on Absurd Trolley Problems
I was really hoping that the trolley I sent into the future in the time travel one would suddenly re-appear in a later question.
dejawu··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
I'm not senior in title, but I recently accepted an offer from a place that looked over my publicly visible GitLab projects and bypassed the technical challenge based on that work. We still had a technical conversation to confirm that I knew what I was talking about. Their willingness to do this played a huge role in me choosing their offer.
dejawu··on U.S. task force recommending anxiety screening in kids 8 and older
I ask this genuinely and non-rhetorically: are they wrong? Everything seems to say that we are running out of time to avert climate disaster, and they're the ones who will have to live with the consequences if we fail.
dejawu··on How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?
Reddit's is kind of infamous for posts from people in insane relationships. (There's even a rumor that Grimes posted there while dating Elon, but that's unconfirmed so I won't link it here.)

You can find a fun sampling of those insane posts here: https://nitter.net/redditships

dejawu··on Josh Wardle created Wordle as part of an ongoing quest to design online spaces
Many of the points in the New Yorker article were also shared by Wardle himself in this (pre-Wordle) talk about April Fools Day at Reddit:

dejawu··on Ask HN: Where do you hang out virtually online?
I used to frequent said imageboard as well! I owe to it a lot of my initial curiosity in technolo/g/y that ultimately led up to the career I have now, but I couldn't ever go back. There's a certain "voice" attributable to the board as a whole, the same way HN is known to have a voice (e.g. "HN would think X about Y"), and its infectious cynicism started to take root and corrupt my daily thoughts, eventually becoming the voice of my own depression. I lost of lot of time and energy thinking that repeatedly exposing myself to that was making me stronger, when all it was doing was wearing me down and destroying me.

If you're still enjoying it, more power to ya! I sometimes still miss it myself, and whenever I drop by I remember both why I spent so much time there and why I left. Just a fair warning to anyone who might want to give it a try. That saying isn't kidding... it really does stay with you forever.

dejawu··on Solving Wordle with Z3
We can do a lot better than random on our first guess, though. Playing the game as a human, I found that it helped to eliminate (or confirm the presence of) vowels and common consonants ASAP. A quick search for five-letter words with three distinct vowels (can't get more than that without straying beyond common English) and the most common consonants (R, S, T) yields words like "autos", "raise", and "suite", which I've anecdotally found to make for great starting words.
dejawu··on Kanazawa’s Empty Spaces
One of my fondest memories is a day-trip I took to Kenrokuen. It was the dead of winter, absolutely blanketed in snow with more coming down, and I remember being simply awestruck by the serene beauty of it. I still go back and look at the photos I took there four or five years ago - it's one of the few times I've actually wished I'd sprung for a phone with a decent camera.

I also remember hopping on a bus, looking ridiculous covered in snow after a whole day walking around outside, and getting a good-natured laugh from some schoolchildren for my appearance. Good times.

dejawu··on Taking apart the 2010 Fisher Price re-released Music Box Record Player
A friend of mine from engineering school had pretty much this exact idea for a joke record player: Require the user to provide a record and place the needle on it, but then use image-recognition to identify the label/cover art and stream the album while the record spun uselessly.

Seeing someone do this, but unironically and for a real product specifically meant for humans who are actively developing their sense of how the world around the works, feels somewhere between cynical and outright deceptive. It reminds me of the Mechanical Turk (the original one, not the Amazon service): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_Turk - a machine deliberately designed to mislead.

dejawu··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm

dejawu··on Show HN: Coding Font – A game to find your favorite coding font
I really like this! And as someone who never cared a whole lot about what font I use while coding, I was genuinely going to use it to choose myself a font. I do, however, agree with a lot of the issues/feature requests in this thread - would you be willing to open-source it? I wouldn't mind helping to fix/implement those requests myself.
dejawu··on Star Labs StarLite Mk IV – 11" Linux laptop with Coreboot
I recently got myself a 2017 Macbook (the fanless 12" one with only one USB-C port). I'd highly recommend it - it only ran me about $400. If anything, thanks to more mature USB-C and wireless ecosystems, it's nicer to use now than it was when it was new and cost $1700!
dejawu··on Classified tank specs leaked on War Thunder game forums again
I believe that's exactly how intelligence agencies will compel people to spy for them and betray their own nations: they make them feel smart and special for sharing information.

dejawu··on Now You Can Probably Afford That Device You Longed for a Decade Ago
Lately, I've been immensely enjoying buying up last-gen's overpriced gimmicky hardware for dirt cheap. I'm typing this from a top-of-the-line late-model 12" MacBook (the one with only a single USB-C port) that I got for $430, probably a fourth of what it cost when new. If anything it's even better to use now than when it was new, since the USB-C and wireless ecosystems have both matured so much since it was released. It makes for a perfect second laptop, just like all the review outlets said it would've been if it weren't for the price. And like the article says, the process of finding it on eBay and waiting for it to arrive was just as satisfying as if I'd bought it new.

I also got an LG G8X and its folding screen attachment for less than $200. I can't wait for the Galaxy Fold 2 to be less than $500, that's probably what I'll go for next.

dejawu··on Whatever Happened to UI Affordances?
I loved that too! I use AltDrag[0] to get that functionality in Windows. It's a bit old and you may have to tweak it a bit to make it work with HiDPI, but it's now become a must-install when I set up a new machine.

dejawu··on FCC finally starts tackling America's robocall scourge
I think we've all taken the wrong approach to the phone spam problem.

Whenever I get a scam call, I always answer. I let the guy do his spiel about the free vacation he's got for me, then when he asks me for my credit card, I hit him with one of the ligma jokes [0] and hang up. Never takes more than five minutes of my time and it's a source of great joy for me. I've gotten the same guy three times and he's fallen for it every single time; at this point I'm starting to develop a bond with him.

If we pushed a social movement that popularized this, we could basically DDOS phone scamming out of being viable.

dejawu··on Do Digital Platforms Reduce Moral Hazard? The Case of Uber and Taxis
Last month I had a family member go to the hospital (things are okay now). We called an ambulance and then followed it to as it took a route to the hospital that was twenty minutes longer than necessary. When we arrived, we asked if they were using navigation and they confirmed that they were not.

In our case things were fine but I couldn't help but think that that's definitely cost lives before.

dejawu··on Heavy is the Head that wears the AirPods Max
I think it's natural and healthy to have a revulsion towards unnecessary excess.

It's not that they're $550, it's that they don't need to be $550. Choosing higher quality groceries, ordering delivery instead of going out during a pandemic, or even just buying things that will bring you and your children joy is on a different level than "I will get these $500 headphones instead of the $300 ones that do the same thing just because I can afford them".

Even if you're not explicitly trying to be as moral as possible with every purchase, there is a tangible difference between buying things that will improve your life or the lives of those around you, and buying things that are expensive just because you can.

dejawu··on HomePod has been jailbroken with checkra1n
My computer speakers live on a bookshelf in the center of my apartment, so I don't want them to sound muddy from the side that they're not facing. I wanted the Homepods because they're omni-directional, they sound great, and I think they're really cute! I would've happily paid extra for that set of traits, but Apple seems determined not to have me as a customer.

What I ended up doing is getting two of the Bose Home Speaker 500, which has sideways-firing speakers. I leave them in aux mode all the time and arranged them so that no matter which side of the shelf you're on, the left audio will be on your left side and the right audio will be on your right side.
