dehrmann··on The future of everything is lies, I guess: Where do we go from here?
> AI can also be the best teacher in the world

I just ran this for just that purpose.

curl http://<local-ollama>:11434/api/generate -d "$(jq -n --arg hist "$(history)" '{ "model": "qwen3.5:35b-a3b-q4_K_M", "stream": false, "prompt": "The following is my bash shell history. Are there any bad patterns I should fix or commands I should learn or master? \($hist)" }')"

dehrmann··on 8087 Emulation on 8086 Systems
Fun trivia: Intel's PCI vendor ID is 8086.
dehrmann··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
As of a few years ago, some of the restrooms in Classic still had purple and yellow tiles.
dehrmann··on CEOs admit AI had no impact on employment or productivity
These aren't related in the way you think they are. Stock price reacts quickly to broader market trends, but more slowly for company-specific trends where revenue is likely stable. The impact of AI in engineering work will take months to show up in the product, probably a year after that for customers and the market to take notice. An AI product is a different thing entirely.
dehrmann··on The RAM shortage could last years
You're thinking an algorithmic tradeoff, but this is an abstraction tradeoff.
dehrmann··on I’m spending months coding the old way
I see some of the value in planning, but experimentation is so cheap, there's also a lot of value in trying it, seeing what works, and learning from it. The main drawback I see from experimentation is failing to understand why something worked.
dehrmann··on Backpacks got worse on purpose
> JanSport still advertises a lifetime warranty...Go try to use it.

Literally every product with a lifetime warranty does this same game. It's best to read them as puffery.

dehrmann··on I run multiple $10K MRR companies on a $20/month tech stack
A job in tech will get you $10k MRR.

At least from this blog post, I wouldn't take his advice on MRR. He's optimizing in the wrong places; he'd be better off spending $100 per month on hosting and focusing on MRR than focusing on bringing hosting costs down to 0.2% of revenue. There's a middle ground without K8S where you use your cloud's autoscaling app hosting and a small, replicated DB. He strawmaned the enterprise approach, and he's trading off a lot of toil for uptime.

dehrmann··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
> Is violence HN worthy when it is directed upward on the org chart?

Generally, world news and politics are not supposed to be submitted unless there's a tech industry connection. The exception seems to be world-changing news, and there's a light touch on YC-affiliated news for conflict of interest reasons.

> Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

dehrmann··on Artemis II safely splashes down
We stopped going to the moon because it's a vanity project. It's expensive, risky, and there isn't much more science to do or that can't be done by robots.
dehrmann··on Record wind and solar saved UK from gas imports worth £1B in March 2026
Or it is! And they can do it cheaper at-scale than you can.
dehrmann··on Record wind and solar saved UK from gas imports worth £1B in March 2026
Someone at the utility went through the same math you are and decided it isn't worth it at scale. It's probably not worth it at small scale.
dehrmann··on Solar and batteries can power the world
The fossil fuel lobby can only do so much. Solar has gotten so cheap it's taking over on its own. Companies are doing it for no reason other than the math makes sense. EV batteries are nearing that point too. You can only keep BYD out of the US for so long.
dehrmann··on Critics say EU risks ceding control of its tech laws under U.S. pressure
Except it's already possible to install a third-party app store or OS on Android devices. The process isn't trivial, but it's officially supported.
dehrmann··on DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market
For some uses right now, this makes sense, but it has to be at scale. If you're working on something that will ship in two years and is used by end users, it might not be worth the effort since production will catch up.
dehrmann··on Ordinary Lab Gloves May Have Skewed Microplastic Data
Latex gloves aren't plastic.
dehrmann··on The Claude Code Source Leak: fake tools, frustration regexes, undercover mode
"Top engineers at Anthropic, OpenAI say AI now writes 100% of their code"

https://fortune.com/2026/01/29/100-percent-of-code-at-anthro...

> Right now for most products at Anthropic it's effectively 100% just Claude writing

- Mike Krieger, chief product officer of Anthropic

dehrmann··on The first 40 months of the AI era
Go to market.
dehrmann··on Microsoft Set for Worst Quarter Since 2008
Either you need the cash now and are already in short-term treasuries or you're it it for the long-term and you'll be laughing at this question when the Dow hits 100k.
dehrmann··on Claude loses its >99% uptime in Q1 2026
I wonder how much is due to supply constraints, how much is standard growing pains, and if over-reliance on AI was the cause for any outages.
dehrmann··on FCC updates covered list to include foreign-made consumer routers
This has been shared on Hacker News before: https://github.com/francescopace/espectre
dehrmann··on Apple Business
Apple's really late to this.
dehrmann··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
You don't need modern AI; you can build a system that does voice recognition, models the airport and airspace, and applies looks for violations.

Actually, you might be able to try this. Live ATC and radar is available.

dehrmann··on PC Gamer recommends RSS readers in a 37mb article that just keeps downloading
That's not a fair comparison. A desktop wallpaper could be 8 MB for a modern OS just because of screen resolution. A 4-minute music video would probably be 100 MB.
dehrmann··on HP trialed mandatory 15-minute support call wait times (2025)
One time, I needed this. I lost my phone with a physical SIM card and needed a replacement that day. Now I'm trying to remember the eSIM transfer flow to know if this is still an issue.

But also, which MVNO should you go to? Carriers supposedly prioritize their own customers, so it feels a bit like running on spot instances.

dehrmann··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?
There was a book on this called "The Paradox of Choice." Its argument is that too many choices stress people out over the fear of choosing wrong.
dehrmann··on How the Turner twins are mythbusting modern technical apparel
> On the vast, blinding expanse of the Greenland Ice Cap

But not double-blinding. If I were the twin in the retro gear, I'd subconsciously be trying harder to try to make a point.

dehrmann··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?
You actually don't know the true cost until you learn the quirks of the UI, how it handles proprietary drivers, upgrades, the packaging system, how up-to-date and complete its packages are, etc.
dehrmann··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
I think most states don't consider it public domain.
dehrmann··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?
> I actually think it's nice to have both

Options that are equivalent enough for most end users just cause confusion. There are also too many distros, and the Gnome vs. KDE competition set desktop Linux back another 10 years. That's three dimensions of big, important choices with not much downside if you pick the happy path and a whole lot of downside if you don't.
