fossify gallery is great, but any idea how to only view videos? while there are sections for favorites, screenshots, and others, I don't see any for videos

defrim··on The Economic Benefit of Refactoring
Being a bit cheeky here -- the amount of comments on this post is a telltale sign of how common / desirable refactoring is for the majority of developers (xD). It isn't our fault though, maybe if those pesky managers read this article then they would understand..

defrim··on Ask HN: How are you interviewing engineers in this agentic era?
Try my best to test their systems programming knowledge and general programming expertise, NOT leetcode or academic memorization;

stuff like the pros and cons of JWT, when orchestration is necessary, APIs vs message queues, their opinion on statically vs dynamically typed languages, etc

these questions don't tell you directly how efficient they will be on a project or language stack, but they DO tell you whether or not the person actually understands programming at a deeper and wider level, and not just experts at regurgitating generic PRs for your average 10LOC ticket

A local, static-image wallpaper manager (kinda like Wallpaper Engine but for directories of images) Made it for myself because windows wallpaper/background management is horrible lol, avail on linux though too

As a devout supporter of Ukraine, I'm not sure it's fair to denounce the FOSS version of the app just because it was built by developers that reside in Russia. We all know that the company outwardly stating "we are against the invasion of Ukraine" wouldn't end well for them, and as long as you're not paying for it, I don't see a huge difference using this vs. your average American software (in which the developers also reside in a country with questionable government leadership). Enlighten me if I'm wrong though
defrim··on Board Games in Ancient Fiction: Egypt, Iran, Greece
thank you for introducing me; i've never realized just how old some board games are. Even in rural eastern europe, my extended family has been playing "Nine Man's Morris" for decades, which I now know was likely a cultural custom there for centuries because of its history. I just thought it was some game they made up lol! Extremely cool
defrim··on How will the miracle happen today?
this comment was beautiful. In my younger years, I used to be so embarrassed when I'd go grocery shopping or elsewhere with my mother and she would ask about service people's lives and stories. I used to hate it and feel uncomfortable and wonder what the point even was.

Thank you for completely changing my perspective, on something I haven't thought about in a long time

defrim··on Discord to File Confidentially for IPO
unfortunately, the user-unfriendly changes started years ago, especially around 2023. Having used it since 2016, you can tell that post covid is when they shifted from consumer-focused to revenue-focused; just look at how many people are outraged by the appearance of embedded ads, game "quests", nitro feature-stealing, discord profile purchasable customizations, and (one that not many people talk about) trendy corporate habits like year recaps and T&C changes.

"WallMod" -> wallpaper manager and modifier and autosetter. Kinda like wallpaper engine but instead tailored specifically to static images since I don't like animated ones personally. https://github.com/DefrimBinakaj/WallMod

Open to suggestions :)

defrim··on Show HN: I wanted WallpaperEngine but for images and more granular so I built it
It is essentially a wallpaper browser, modifier, and manager for jpg/png/bmp images (NOT live wallpapers).

Features that make it unique: - ability to set only a specific area of an image as your background without creating a new image - filter and sort by aspect ratio and colour among other common ones - infinite length history of all set wallpapers that you can go back to and instantly set again - ability to set any image as a wallpaper no matter the size (for example, windows doesn’t let you set images larger than about 10m pixels)

I got sick of using the built in windows wallpaper manager because of its clunkyness, performance, and generally low amount of features, so I built this instead.

I plan to support virtually all Linux DEs in the future, and OSX if possible as well. I also plan to add support for built-in "cronjobs" where a user can set automatically-changing wallpapers where they can specify either time of day or amount of hours until next wallpaper is toggled.

Still in early stages of development, but I would really appreciate any feedback and feature suggestions. Love to give back to the community so I hope at least one of you finds this interesting!

defrim··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
While you make a good point, I think it's safe to say that Youtube is quite a lot more significant for the average person than facebook is.

Say that I wanted guides or tutorials on fixing something in my car, in-depth steps for making a certain recipe, or even programming courses. Youtube is easily one of the best resources for all of these and everything in general.

Saying to write-off one of the internet's best tools just because they've pushed out mv3 seems like giving up too quickly for me.

defrim··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Something that not a lot of people are mentioning is that north american made VAG (vw, audi, etc) cars are made in factories that have shown much less reliability. Everybody in Europe praises VW for how affordable and reliable they are (since they're made in-house in Germany for the most part) - excluding the 2009-2014 years since they had quite a bad Golf line in terms of reliability
defrim··on Cybertruck Is Already a Production Nightmare for Tesla
"The stunt by Tesla by shooting a .45 caliber bullet at the cyberpunk doesn’t prove it’s bullet proof.

A 45 is a low-velocity round with a very large blunt nose.

If they shot it up with an ak47 round or a 5.56 out of a AR15, they would have made Swiss cheese out of that door panel.

There are many high-velocity pistol rounds that would do this also. One is a 5.7mm or a .22 magnum."
