deepakjois··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
(author of post here)

I still use both Go and Python. But Python gives me access to a lot more libraries that do useful stuff. For example the YouTube transcript example I wrote about in the article was only possible in Python because afaik Go doesn't have a decent library for transcript extraction.

deepakjois··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
C# too: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/announcing-dotnet-run-...
deepakjois··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
uvx is useful to run scripts inside PyPi packages. It does not support running Python scripts directly

You can use uvx run scripts with a combination of the --with flag to specify the dependencies and invoking python directly. For e.g

uvx --with youtube-transcript-api python transcript.py

But you wont get the benefit of PEP 723 metadata.

deepakjois··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
I tried Raindrop.io and was impressed enough to get an annual subscription to it.

My main use case was to have a single place for all my bookmarks across Android, iOS, OS X and Linux, and across Firefox and Chrome.

Among all the solutions I evaluated, Raindrop.io had the best UX at the time.

deepakjois··on Ask HN: Modern Linux laptop with great battery life?
Does anybody know if running TLP has any specific advantages over running powertop?
deepakjois··on Ask HN: Modern Linux laptop with great battery life?
Most of the issues were sorted out by kernel updates, and a BIOS update I performed recently.

The only thing that Arch clearly improved was the Bluetooth experience, which was very unstable on Ubuntu (even after the upgrage to 17.10). But even that is probably down to the newer kernel in Arch.

deepakjois··on Ask HN: Modern Linux laptop with great battery life?
Just chiming in with another recommendation for the T470, which I currently own. It has a pretty decent battery life.

I wrote about my experiences with installing Linux on it here: https://medium.com/@debugjois/installing-ubuntu-gnome-17-04-... (it’s a bit outdated. I run Arch on it now)

deepakjois··on IPvlan overlay-free Kubernetes Networking in AWS
All the resources suggested in replies to the parent thread seem great. I also found that somebody put out an illustrated guide to Kubernetes networking on Medium:

* Part 1: https://medium.com/@ApsOps/an-illustrated-guide-to-kubernete...

* Part 2: https://medium.com/@ApsOps/an-illustrated-guide-to-kubernete...

deepakjois··on IPvlan overlay-free Kubernetes Networking in AWS
Not directly related, but can someone recommend a beginners resource to understand Kubernetes networking? There are some good ones out there that explain basic Kubernetes concepts like pods, replicas etc. But networking seems to be a more complicated topic, and most intro guides skip over it.
deepakjois··on Ask HN: What books have made the biggest impact on your mental models?
A good summary of the key arguments in the book can be found in this programme that aired on BBC, hosted by David Graeber himself (the author of the book)

deepakjois··on Ecstatic Capitalism’s Brave New Work Ethic
Great article. Does it say anything about the crowd that hangs out here, that this article did not get upvoted enough to make to the front page?
deepakjois··on My wife's and my holiday weekend project: A database of intro books
I like the approach taken in this thread : http://lesswrong.com/lw/3gu/the_best_textbooks_on_every_subj...

One of the rules the poster imposed was for the participants to name the other books they've read on the subject and explain why they thought their chosen textbook was superior.

deepakjois··on HTML5 Readiness : A visualisation of HTML5/CSS3 browser support
Wow, looks like people are out with their claws over what is just a simple, fun experiment with CSS transforms.

FWIW, if you dont like it you can try tweaking it yourself : http://github.com/paulirish/html5readiness.com

deepakjois··on Pi - an e-book reader from Infibeam, an Indian Company
Yes it does. Engadget did a post on the blatant rip-off of both the Amazon.com website and Kindle http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/26/keepin-it-real-fake-part-...

Infibeam responded with a blogpost here : http://blog.infibeam.com/2010/01/uniqueness-argument.html

deepakjois··on My lazy American students
Based on your experience of two friends from India, you started believing that international students are less aware of the consequences of plagiarizing. Your point is nonsensical on so many levels.

First, since when did 'two friends from India' begin reflecting the attitudes of millions of students all over the world (international), only a fraction of which end up in the US in the first place.

Second, how can you conclude that they were unaware of the consequences of plagiarizing. Maybe they were aware of the consequences, but decided to take a chance anyway.

It seems to be that you are subtly implying that the American education system inculcates some sense of ethics (discouraging things like plagiarism) in the students, which for some inexplicable reason the education system of these international students doesn't. That IMHO is bigoted.

deepakjois··on Dhun - Minimalist Music Player for OS X
It was actually a few annoyances with MPD that led me to create Dhun. This was a while ago so things might a have changed. But my main grievances were:

* Installation on OS X wasnt very straightforward. I think the MacPorts version was broken and I had to do some stuff manually to get it to install

* Some of my ID3 tags and MP3 files were not recognised properly, even though they worked fine on iTunes.

deepakjois··on Dhun - Minimalist Music Player for OS X
Shuffle is something that can be done easily.

As for the other requests, you are right it may not be quite minimalist :). But will keep them in mind.

deepakjois··on Dhun - Minimalist Music Player for OS X
I am not using the Spotlight API via mdfind. I wrote a C extension. Care to elaborate on the issue (file a bug maybe)?
deepakjois··on Signaling and Indian Higher Education
The author has some good points, but IMHO he does not see the complete picture.

The IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination), the examination used to recruit students into these institutions is arguably the most grueling experience for a high school kid anywhere in the world. Thousands of students all over India spend upto two years of their lives doing nothing other than preparing for these exams. There are many side-effects to this phenomenon.

First, these exams are not like the regular school exams which essentially promote rote learning. The problems are designed to make you think. Two years doing nothing but solving physics and maths problems hones your problem-solving ability to a very high degree.

Second, the pressure to succeed is immense and the competition is cut-throat. Anyone who has successfully been through two years of such an ordeal will be able to handle stressful and tense situations a lot better. This kind of a mindset is a natural fit for a lot of careers that these kids will eventually go on to take up, thereby increasing their chances of success.

<flamebait> At this age, an average high school kid in the US or UK is probably having a lot more fun, trying to get drunk or get laid :) (if you go by all those teen-flicks and TV Shows!) </flamebait>

deepakjois··on Font in your face
Good overview/background around the @font-face debates.
deepakjois··on Reading list for those who love to learn
FWIW, here is my reading list http://deepak.jois.name/books categorized into different topics.

I am primarily interested in programming and tech, but I have tried to spread my readings into a wide range of topics, which I believe is a good thing.

deepakjois··on Less, a leaner CSS
I think it is important to differentiate between HAML syntax and SASS. Even though both are part of the same package, SASS syntax is actually quite minimal and closely follows CSS syntax, without the extraneous syntactical elements like curly braces etc.

Chris Eppstein, the inventor of SASS has stated elsewhere that one of his primary goals is to make SASS friendly for designers to use, and he claims to have sought feedback from designers as well. See comments here : http://jeffcroft.com/blog/2009/may/20/applying-oop-concepts-...

deepakjois··on Ask HN: Zillow is trying to acquire my app + domain for "a couple hundred bucks", advice?
<blockquote>Be very nice with Zillow and kinda casually mention that you think you might pitch TechCrunch on the idea of a story about the situation - cutting off API access and all. Remember, you're happy to sell and not mad at them, but that they might not come off looking so nice in the press at $250.</blockquote>

By posting everything about the situation on HN, isnt it possible that somebody has already caught wind of the story :).

deepakjois··on Ineligible Bachelors: Indian Men Living in U.S. Strike Out
It is an interesting point you raise. It is perfectly acceptable to agree on roles and settle into them.

But in this case, my guess is that these attitudes have more to do with holding onto a traditional belief in male-dominance than with any concerns for having different roles in marriage. And if I am guessing correct, such beliefs should not be encouraged and nor is it in the interest of any woman to seek out such a partner for herself.

deepakjois··on Ineligible Bachelors: Indian Men Living in U.S. Strike Out
Ya, I guessed that much! Just took the opportunity to clarify my stand a bit more.
deepakjois··on Ineligible Bachelors: Indian Men Living in U.S. Strike Out
Please resist the temptation to generalize based on one experience. There are indeed cultural factors at play, but that is not enough to swipe a brush and paint all the Indians in the US in the same color.

I am an Indian living in the US myself. I married my (then) girlfriend because SHE got a job here and eventually it is me who is doing the "cooking and cleaning" because of being on a non-working visa :). I have plenty of Indian friends in the US who dont hold such narrow-minded views of getting a wife just to cook and clean for them.
