debug-desperado··on The human toll of Fallout 76’s launch
Maybe Todd was trying to just ship the dang thing to satisfy Zenimax. Build the games-as-service sandbox, let it fail, parent company head honchos leave you alone and your teams get to go back to working on the kind of games they actually want to build.
debug-desperado··on Apple Unveils M2
Same issue with power here on my 9570! In fact I just checked after one month of plugged-in non-use, turning it on resulted in dead battery in < 3 minutes. What's crazy is that if I let it charge now, I will get 3 solid hours of battery life. The battery health indicates 2/4, it's definitely not a fully spent battery.

The other thing that has driven me crazy is the wide-gamut 4K screen. The text is nice and crisp, but good luck with sRGB content. Basically all content for non Adobe professionals is fubar'd. I eventually made the situation tolerable by finding an old version of Dell PremierColor and using its sRGB profile (newer versions of the software on Microsoft Store quit working on the 9570 and the color profiles do nothing - imagine that). Still get terrible color banding and crushed blacks, and I'm not even sure investing in a colorimeter would fix it.

Overall I've come to the same conclusion as you. In 2018 this was a $2000 machine (Costco price below retail), and I also can't justify giving Dell another chance.

debug-desperado··on Meta Is Transferring Jest to the OpenJS Foundation
Is that like the Apache graveyard but for node projects?
debug-desperado··on Why I Quit Google’s WebAssembly Team, and How It Made Me Sick
Social stress gave me a case of the shingles once in my twenties. It didn't make much sense to me at the time, but for some reason being stressed out about buying a bunch of Christmas gifts late in the season caused it to happen!
debug-desperado··on Many popular websites see what you type before you hit submit
You think you're going to get discovery to even prove this? Plausible deniability and even just ignorance will likely cause you to get nowhere with wiping this collected data.
debug-desperado··on eBay Robbed This Man of $4700 and Suspended His Account When He Asked Questions
Their internal payment system is so terrible it won't even work with smaller banks. The verification system just fails with an unhelpful error message.

Customer service's approach to fixing this is to submit a ticket to engineering that never gets looked at, then encouraging you to open a new account with one of the larger banks (Wells Fargo, Chase, etc.).

You know things are bad when your customers are pining for Paypal back.

debug-desperado··on Is the DTS vs. Dolby war effectively over?
DTS needs to work that Sony relationship and convince them to convert their surround format to DTS:X. Maybe even allow it for free just to keep their format alive.

The current PS5 3D-audio solution is good only for headphones. They have a "virtual" height option for stereo speakers, but it released to terrible reviews. No 7.1 virtual height speakers, though that's also supposedly in the works. I'm not optimistic it will be any better. Those who invest in good audio setups don't want it either way.

Give us proper 3D audio Sony, this is something Microsoft has had since 2017.

debug-desperado··on Excel 2.0 – Is there a better visual data model than a grid of cells?
Looks like what I've always wished for in sheets, more in line with what programmers would like to work with rather than AirTable and SmartSheets.

Wish there were some way to take it for a spin without having to "Request Access".

debug-desperado··on Whatever happened to QuickTime?
I distinctly remember the QuickTime uninstaller had a checkmark option for “full uninstall” or similar that nuked my sound driver on Windows XP. Probably caused some missing DLL for the Sound Blaster card. The only way my high school self could fix it was full OS reinstall!
debug-desperado··on Is it time to remove reiserfs?
According to wikipedia Hans might be out on parole next year. As part of his release agreement he should be required to maintain his namesake filesystem.
debug-desperado··on Why I Like Java (2014)
The problem is that without annotations, injecting behavior or doing any sort of metaprogramming is nigh impossible. Higher-order functions aren't fun to deal with in Java, even in the post-Java-8 world.
debug-desperado··on I tested four NVMe SSDs from four vendors – half lose FLUSH’d data on power loss
This seems like it would only work with with an external enclosure setup. I wonder if a test could be performed in the usual NVMe slot.

Of course, it seems it would be much harder to pull main power for the entire PC. I'm not sure how you'd do that - maybe high speed camera, high refresh monitor to capture the last output counter? Still no guarantee I'm afraid.

debug-desperado··on CISA Director on Log4j Vulnerability
Spring Boot apps aren't affected by this unless you switched logging frameworks. Nor any JBoss frameworks. How many people actually use Log4j2? It's probably in 4th or 5th place among Java logging frameworks, and likely still has less uptake than the original Log4j.
debug-desperado··on “Open source” is broken
A nightmare in Node world perhaps (our latest simple web server has over 2,000 dependencies).

In the Java world it’s much simpler with a few excludes in your POM. Especially for libraries that keep stable interfaces, such as a logging library.

debug-desperado··on Log4j RCE Found
Thank goodness Spring Boot has stuck with Logback for its default logging implementation.

While the original Log4j had huge uptake a decade ago, its successor is nowhere near as ubiquitous.

debug-desperado··on Using PostgreSQL’s JSONB for NoSQL (2019) [video]
Had a great win this last week with JSONB. Basically I needed an aggregated materialized view for performance but still have access to the non-aggregated row data. Think aggregate by account ID but the query may access any given month of data for that account. It’s cheating a bit to use a non-relational structure, but the correlated subqueries I had to use before were 20x slower.
debug-desperado··on 61% of Americans paid no income taxes in 2020
I believe all US debts to private creditors can be settled in dollars. Any debtor can take a creditor to court if the creditor tries to demand payment in other forms.
debug-desperado··on Loom: Project Loom Early-Access Builds
I'd wager they will both be ready before Go gets generics.
debug-desperado··on Early Retirement (2006)
My retirement plan involves stuffing as much money into creditor-protected assets and then declaring bankruptcy if I get a huge medical bill. I see no alternative in today's world of "surprise" out-of-network charges.

The types of assets are protected in Texas: 1. 401k + IRA (plus Roth versions) 2. Home 3. Two vehicles 4. Permanent insurance (i.e. whole life / indexed universal life - not optimal unless you want to leave money to heirs)

Other states aren't quite as generous with the creditor protection, so check your state's laws.

debug-desperado··on Study finds 83% of software developers feel burnout
More painters should take the Thomas Kinkade-pill and create art for the masses!
debug-desperado··on Amazon tells bosses to conceal when employees are on performance management plan
Wow, that 401k match is pathetically low. I'm surprised more number-crunching types don't put an employee group together to advocate for improvement.
debug-desperado··on Insurance is like gambling, don't overdo it
So what I’m hearing is to go all-in on a permanent life insurance policy.

JK, I know they’re not popular with the FIRE crowd. These are quite different than other types of insurance though. They may work out in your favor compared to bonds due to the tax advantages.

debug-desperado··on IRS records reveal how the wealthiest avoid income tax
The problem is that number was as low as $1 million a decade ago. Inheritance taxes are a political football, and the current system just blindly taxes the estate rather than the one who receives the inheritance. If the goal is fairness or distribution of resources, it makes sense to switch to system like in Ireland where each heir is taxed individually.
debug-desperado··on Prisma – ORM for Node.js and TypeScript
I'd still take Hibernate and Entity Framework over any of the Node ORMs I've seen, including Prisma. The former usually have the feature you need to generate the queries you want, but you just haven't read enough of the docs to understand how to do so. The latter straight up lack the functionality and lack sufficient docs.
debug-desperado··on The looming software kill-switch lurking in aging Playstation hardware
Think I will shift all multiplatform console game purchases to Microsoft after this incident. They seem to have a reasonable backwards-compatibility story figured out.

At this point I'm pretty sure the only thing holding off OG Xbox and Xbox 360 compatibility on Xbox One / Series consoles is publisher approval. With the possible exception of Kinect games, I expect virtually every game on Xbox One and later to be supported as long as MS makes console hardware.

debug-desperado··on The Norway Problem
Thanks for this list, I’ve never heard of Ion. I’ll consider it for config and even replacing Avro & Protobuf in future projects.
debug-desperado··on Performance comparison: counting words in Python, Go, C++, C, Awk, Forth, Rust
Been true of Java for decades. Most application programmers aren't churning out highly tuned C++, and their design is easily outperformed with a bump allocator and generational GC.
debug-desperado··on Woman who received $9,300 electric bill sues wholesale electric provider
My brother is a Griddy customer and he probably didn't realize just how high the ceiling was on wholesale electricity prices. Griddy sent out alerts a few days before the storm and encouraged customers to switch providers, but that of course wasn't feasible on such short notice. The electric coop in town needed about a week to activate service. He did what he could instead: turn off water, drain faucets, set thermostat as low as feasible, unplug everything, and move his family into my parents for the week.

He's still looking at a colossal electricity bill this month, but thankfully nowhere near as much as this woman. The last minute escape plan worked out in the end. Not everyone in Texas had these options unfortunately.

debug-desperado··on AMD Patent Reveals Hybrid CPU-FPGA Design That Could Be Enabled by Xilinx Tech
Similar story with a patent that a friend applied for at National Instruments some years ago for his work on LabView software. As far as I could tell from his description it was more of an implementation detail rather than a patentable product. NI was pushing for patents though, and he obliged. Ended up getting a nice little bonus for his young family!
debug-desperado··on Amazon Timestream is generally available
I believe Timescale has a similar issue if you’ve enabled compression (and it’s usually too expensive not to). Perhaps the main reason we’re sticking with Influx for the moment.
