debug-desperado··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Using Cursor with Jetbrains via ACP isn't that different than using within the Cursor IDE. You still get Agent/Plan/Ask modes with model selectors.

I'd recommend installing the Cursor IDE, then using it to install Cursor CLI (it's easier to keep things up to date this way), then setting up your Jetbrains IDE to point to the Cursor CLI via ACP integration.

debug-desperado··on Bluesky now platform of choice for science community
If Twitter & Bluesky are for thoughts, and Instagram is for thots, Threads is where the "thots go to share their thoughts."

All jokes aside, it's an endless stream of takes from people who don't have an internal monologue. Plus some influencers trying their hand with unoriginal bait threads. Like the other poster said, it's worth checking out every now and again just to read some comments from folks who aren't thought leaders.

debug-desperado··on Tesla must pay portion of $329M damages after fatal Autopilot crash, jury says
"Vehicle will not break when accelerator pedal is applied" is displayed on the screen in AutoPilot mode. The system warns you this every time you have foot on the pedal in AutoPilot mode. I wonder if it did that back in 2019 as well or if accidents like this spurred that as a UI change.

Also, how the heck is Mr. McGee supposed to come up with the other 67% of this judgment?

debug-desperado··on The many ways tarrifs will hit electronics
Ah yes: buy, borrow, and die. It definitely works.

I don't think stepped-up basis should go away though, otherwise it's just the government getting a second cut of the inflation it causes.

The bigger issue for society is that our equity markets just don't have any real risk of losing your lunch anymore, so these strategies emerge.

debug-desperado··on The many ways tarrifs will hit electronics
"The scam of income tax is that it's progressive on paper but not in practice."

Perfectly put. It's always bothered me that the tax brackets don't continue on in a logarithmic fashion, e.g. new brackets at 1.5 million, 15 million, 150 million, etc.

debug-desperado··on Sleep is essential – researchers are trying to work out why
"Hurry up and idle" for CPU design ended up being great for power efficiency. Nature came to the same conclusion for biological organisms a long time ago.
debug-desperado··on Cure for male pattern baldness given boost by sugar discovery
"Because all of the included participants were from infertile couples, this appears to be a limitation of the study..."

Pretty big limitation, and their discussion really is just there to justify publishing anyway. Both groups, bald and shaggy, may as well have been shooting blanks.

debug-desperado··on Scott Galloway: How the US is destroying young people's future [video]
I'm not convinced that Scott's suggestions will move the needle. Most are good ideas (e.g. term limits, more vocational training opportunities), but some I find distasteful (e.g. forced identity verification for internet services, not being entitled to social security if you've accumulated too much, etc.). We've made too many terrible decisions for too long as a nation, to the point now I feel like the spiritual malaise for the young can only be cured by hard asset prices collapsing by 30% or more.

His end slide recap is below.

Economics:

  // Increase minimum wage to $25/hr
  // AMT for high income and corporations
  // Re-fund the IRS
  // Negative income tax (i.e. UBI)
  // Eliminate capital gains exemption
Technology:

  // Remove 230 protection for algorithmically-elevated content
  // Identity verification
  // Break up Big Tech
  // Age-gating
Social Policy:

  // Universal pre-K
  // Reinstate expanded child tax credit
  // Term limits
  // Income-based affirmative action
  // Expand college enrollment & vocational programs
Mental Health:

  // Ban phones in schools
  // Invest in 3rd places
  // Big Brothers/Sisters programs
  // National service requirement
debug-desperado··on Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently?
Can you actually outperform the KEFs and Perlistens of the world? They seem to have so much engineering put into their designs I don't believe a hobbyist can realistically match them.

I will admit that stuff like "speakers with quasi-active noise cancellation behind them" sounds intriguing. That's probably a good reason to get into this rabbit hole!

debug-desperado··on ExxonMobil is suing investors who want tougher action on climate change
Or suing your HoA.
debug-desperado··on Google cites 'durable cost savings' as CEO Sundar Pichai warns of more layoffs
Bing is pretty great now. You get Bing points (redeemable for ~$100 in swag per year) and free Chat GPT that usually answers your question before you decide which link to click on.
debug-desperado··on JetBrains AI
"One can block AI features for the project by creating a file with the name '.noai' in the root of the repository."

Is this a standard among vendors yet, or are we veering into more dotfile project directory pollution?

debug-desperado··on Super Mario RPG is an endearing, perplexing relic
You're not alone, I also got stuck in that opening sequence as a child - thankfully the game was just a rental. Honestly at that stage in my life I didn't understand what was going on in the battle sequences since they were so text heavy. RPGs were too foreign of a concept at the time. Couple years later went on to enjoy the crap out of FF6, Chrono Trigger, and SMRPG, so I really should revisit Earthbound.
debug-desperado··on Ask HN: Is Express still "de-facto" for building Node back ends?
I've been on various projects that utilized Express, Koa, and NestJS (which wraps Express or Fastify).

Of the three, I'd choose Koa again over the others. Their design works better with modern javascript (async/await). While there may be fewer middleware packages for Koa than Express, it's usually not that hard to write your own if you can't find what you need.

For NestJS I didn't care for the decorator-driven "Spring-like" design. In JS codebases it's more natural to take a functional approach.

debug-desperado··on As I get older, I just don't care about new technology
Games just don't respect your time any more. Usually 80+ hours to experience an open world game with a handful of side quests.

While I don't share the same love of "emotional experience" games, at this point I'm thinking about only sticking to mission-based and "wide linear" games so that I leave plenty of time for other pursuits in life.

debug-desperado··on Why Htmx Does Not Have a Build Step
This is usually the Typescript team tightening up some "loose" behavior that should have had saner defaults. For instance, the catch block default typing changed from unknown from any.

The bigger issue I've found is when you're using 3rd party type definitions for some library you can't always trust them to be correct or updated. It's a major risk for the soundness of your build.

debug-desperado··on Spring 6.1 now compatible with virtual threads and JDK 21
It has supported generic List and Set interfaces for one-to-many and many-to-many mappings since Hibernate 3 I believe (~2005).

What did you have in mind?

debug-desperado··on Can Dell’s 6K monitor beat their 8K monitor?
Very awesome. Thanks for sharing these little known M2 updates!
debug-desperado··on Can Dell’s 6K monitor beat their 8K monitor?
Did Apple slip some better scaling in with the M2 chips? Or maybe with the OS update?

Or perhaps you're referring to HDMI 2.1 support?

debug-desperado··on Google keeps failing its Nest customers
Other than the slow rollout, what's wrong with Google Fiber?
debug-desperado··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
Microsoft Edge just created a logged-in profile on my machine for the second time. I'm not even sure how - maybe it's because I logged into Bing to play with their chat? I'm on a Windows 10 Local account and this is getting old.

EDIT, think I finally found out the option under Profile Preferences:

"Automatic sign in on Microsoft Edge

If you're not signed in currently on Microsoft Edge, we'll automatically sign you in by using your sign in info from other Microsoft sites like Outlook."

debug-desperado··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
This was confirmed for me back in 2021 when a personal trainer at my gym decided to do a quick coding boot camp and immediately got hired in the industry.
debug-desperado··on JDK 20 and JDK 21: What we know so far
So, has perfect hashing dispatch like you're describing here actually been added (or planned) in the JIT?
debug-desperado··on American drivers have a blinding headlight problem
Motion must explain why I find these LCDs in my home office so offensive. Normally they're not a bother, but when my ceiling fan is on and I look at the lights (below the fan), I swear there is some strobing.
debug-desperado··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
Not sure on MacOS memory usage (I stick with Safari and Edge on respective laptops for battery life reasons), but agreed 100% about Firefox on Android tablet. It's just awkward.

They need to make the Android UI in general a closer match for the desktop and iOS (skinned Safari) browsers. For instance, note how buried things like "passwords" are in the Android menus compared to iOS and desktop browsers:

Desktop: Menu->Passwords iOS: Menu->Passwords Android: Menu->Settings->Logins & Passwords->Saved logins

It's almost like the Android team doesn't even use their own browser on other platforms, or there's no product lead to make things consistent.

debug-desperado··on Prisma laying off 28% staff
More popular than Hibernate and Entity Framework (both free)?

I doubt it.

debug-desperado··on Software testing, and why I'm unhappy about it
So, "given when then" style tests (e.g. Spock) plus a descriptive test name. Or more than that?
debug-desperado··on Get Running with Couch to 5K
One of my biggest regrets in life is not discovering how pleasant running can be until I was almost thirty. The first couple of months sucked as I was training my cardiovascular system for pretty much the first time ever. Eventually I got to the point I looked forward to twice weekly 5Ks.

The payoff has been totally worth it. Nowadays every yearly physical the doctor tells me "you're healthy as a horse." Contrast that with my physical a year earlier that suggested I was tipping into prediabetic territory.

Did plenty of strength training throughout my twenties and some vigorous high school sports, but embarrassingly had not run a mile since elementary school PE class.

My advice to younger folks: don't skip cardio. Heavy lifting alone won't really get you where you want to be unless you do 5+ days a week and are otherwise active. Get rid of the bro split and commit to at least 2 days of cardio each week instead.

debug-desperado··on Adobe now requires you to purchase a subscription to rotate PDF pages
Had to uninstall Adobe Reader this week because it's become unbearably slow on my 2015 MacBook Pro. I'm talking it can't smooth scroll a 2-page resume PDF.

Preview does the trick just fine.

debug-desperado··on Amazon confirms corporate staff cuts that could hit 10k employees
Besides Alexa, I believe the Luna and gaming divisions were cut back some based on LinkedIn postings.

Which reminds me, what ever became of O3DE (Lumberyard)? Seems like they should refocus some hiring there to get any market penetration.
