deanstag··on Facebook revenue beats estimates; discloses antitrust probe
I'm not sure if the report includes Whatsapp, but that should be a huge portion of active users.
deanstag··on Evolutionary gene loss may explain why only humans are prone to heart attack
It could be that they were not diagnosed as heart attacks before that.

edit: And also maybe general life style differences regarding availability and richness of food, exercise, shorter life spans etc.

deanstag··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
Any Nathan For You fans here?
deanstag··on tmux Privilege Escalation
Haha. I thought the same. But here, what is interesting is that, an attacker could easily run a background process which quietly monitors the tmux panes, and execute privileged instructions once a root pane has started. The user would never even know.
deanstag··on BIY: Believe It Yourself
It will reinforce the beliefs of gullible people about the underlying superstitions. They might not purchase it, but they will read it without realizing it is satire, and move on feeling that such things exist as evidence for such beliefs.
deanstag··on Intermediate Vim
I learned touch typing when I was 25. THis was probably after 6 years of programming and computer use. I could already type fast enough without looking at the keyboard, but I decided to learn anyway.YMMV, but it took me about 2hours for 5 days to get comfortable with touch typing. For programmers who are still wondering the effort required, just do it!

For me the biggest advantage I see after learning touch typing is lesser errors because you are getting proper feedback from the screen while you are typing.

deanstag··on It’s Hard to Learn French in Middle Age
NOTE: this comment does not add anything to the discussion

"As adults we’re less willing to be novices for an extended period of time." - I read this comment and thought to myself "Interesting" and moved on to other web pages. And then it hit me again and again that this was absolutely true in a lot of cases where me or my friends found it frustrating to learn something new. Thank you for putting it this way.

deanstag··on A man who 'discovered' 780 Indian languages
I think you might be talking about Hindi. That is the most common language.
deanstag··on A man who 'discovered' 780 Indian languages
Are you talking about Brazil or India here?

( I apologize in advance if it looks like I am arguing by asking questions. But I am asking because of curiosity/lack of knowledge )

deanstag··on A man who 'discovered' 780 Indian languages
But If there is a better utility for a language like English, why not push for English + Regional Language?
deanstag··on A man who 'discovered' 780 Indian languages
I think soneca's point was Brazil is still developing irrespective of any language barriers. So how does your statistics on PPP become an argument for that?
deanstag··on A man who 'discovered' 780 Indian languages
Promoting a language because the Prime minister finds himself more proficient orator in the language? I find that hard to believe. Do you have sources on this?
deanstag··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
Yeah, hopefully this is one of those wake up calls where the management realizes to funnel more resources into IT and security in general.
deanstag··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
Haha. I meant in all layers of the organization. Could be the IT Security Department, Policy Department, Could be the homegrown development team, anything.
deanstag··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
Why is H1B relevant here?
deanstag··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
With all the Equifax headlines today, I was wondering if there would be a few poor souls in the the Equifax Tech Department who feels atleast a bit responsible for the whole mess. ( I do understand it is a collective responsibility of the management as well )

edit: Was the analysis of the hack published?

deanstag··on Attacked by Rotten Tomatoes
I totally agree. Before last year, I always had luck trusting the tomato meter before going for a movie. Especially in the last year, I realised that something had changed and movies ( especially the super hero ones ) with 90+ scores were not enjoyable at all. I have stopped trusting RT. I moved from imdb to RT about 5 years back, and now I am looking for a new source for reviews. If anybody knows of any good alternatives lemme know.
deanstag··on Why I Quit Being So Accommodating (1922)
Over the last year, I have been doing some introspection. There have been events where I help my friends a lot. Even while it pushes me into a very frustrated mental state. Mostly because it is hard to say no. Trying to keep up with my general helpful attitude. I have not started consciously to say no yet, but I feel it is very much required. Thank you for your thoughts on this :)
deanstag··on Helping a Million Developers Exit Vim
Correct. But as the article mentions, it might be confusing for developers who predominantly use IDEs and text editors that are not modal in nature.
deanstag··on Tmux and Vim – better together
https://github.com/wincent/clipper is what i have been using for clipboard integration. It is useful for remote server clipboard syncing too.
deanstag··on Ask HN: Coding notes – how do you do them?
Quiver is a life saver for me. Markdown, i can use my vim keybindings, the data format is just json, easily taggable and searchable. I save my snippets, observations, commit history, everything in quiver now. It is synced via dropbox as well
deanstag··on .xyz Launch Policies (2014) [pdf]
OP, how/why did you stumble across this?
deanstag··on Show HN: Libtmux – A tmux workspace manager in Python
This was exactly what i was looking for. With this, i have something like a console, to control the panes, windows

My biggest usecase right now is when i get dropped to a pdb shell, right now i call os.system("tmux split-window ..." ) with specific commands to either open up the source code of the last frame, or to open up a log file dump . Using libtmux would be easier and cleaner.

deanstag··on Are videos really the best tool for the job of educating coders?
I fall in the same category. And as another commenter has replied, search is a plus for textual alternatives.

But I am sure there is a majority of learners who prefer video/audio medium ( given the vast amount of video tutorials out there ) . If anyone reading this falls in that category, why do you prefer it? Genuinely interested.

deanstag··on Tell HN: Ycombinator.com Blacklisted by Norton
Thanks OP. Norton will blacklist HN again!
deanstag··on How I'd teach computer science
My guess would be that a CS program would cover more fundamentals on which you can always build upon, but a Sw Engineering program might not focus on the basics as much. Of course there might be exceptions in either programs.
deanstag··on iPhone 7
Burn!!
deanstag··on Lake Nyos suffocated over 1,700 people in one night
Buy a flight along with the hotel and you could save as much as 75$!
deanstag··on Ask HN: What was your “why didn't I start doing this sooner” moment?
+1 for solo traveling. done waiting for others and done not being concerned about making other people wait
deanstag··on Humans once opposed coffee and refrigeration: why we often hate new stuff
Yup. Totally agree. I have a lot of relatives (in India ) who try their best not to eat food that is refrigerated.
