de6u99er··on Ironically, Zoom tells employees to return to office for work
I would add companies that invested into fancy office space, which is hard to justify because nobody wants to use it.
de6u99er··on Project: Police Flasher and 7-Segment LED Clock Through-Hole Soldering Kits
I remember the time when we only had red, green, and orange LEDs. Blue LEDs were a real game changer.
de6u99er··on The Sad Bastard Cookbook
I got myself a cooking robot (Bosch Cookit). All I have to do is buy ingredients, follow the instructions on the display, and put it to the dishwasher after cooking.

The recipes are easy to follow, very tasty and most of them are healthy.

de6u99er··on How Wozniak’s code for the Apple 1 works
I love how he made Wozniaks Apple1 code run on his breadboard computer with just a few minor modifications

I highly recommend watching his "Build a 65c02-based computer from scratch" video series. -> https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLowKtXNTBypFbtuVMUVXNR0z1...

de6u99er··on Demoscene accepted as UNESCO cultural heritage in The Netherlands
That's awesome news!
de6u99er··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
I blame Reddit's leadership for bad decision making. They have basically decided to apply every known dark and anti pattern.

I remember when they started using those annoying pop ups to ask people if they want to rather use the official app or continue. Then suddenly for some links only the Reddit app would work. Nowadays I try to avoid clicking on Reddit links when I am on mobile.

de6u99er··on Thousands of subreddits pledge to go dark after the Reddit CEO’s recent remarks
u/spez's AMA was a complete dumpster fire. Hard to believe he's the CEO.
de6u99er··on iOS 17 automatically removes tracking parameters from links you click on
I'm using the ClearURL browser extension for that. It's also a available on Firefox Mobile.

Unfortunately some apps are making it harder to open links directly in Firefix. E.g. Reddit's app has removed the possibility to open links in an external browser.

de6u99er··on An Excel error led Austria's SPÖ to announce the wrong candidate as the winner
That's quite embarrassing. I personally am happy that my favored candidate has won in the end.

People need to stop using this horrible tool. I have watched people doing things in Excel in seconds for stuff that would take me multiple minutes. Main difference is me checking if results after each transformation are plausible. I wonder how often such "Excel-Errors" led to wrong decisions.

de6u99er··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
I brlieve self driving can be achieved through standards, e.g. if roads become digital. Street signs and cars could communicate the current state of traffic in real time with other cars. It should be left to the state to detect certain events. E.g. traffic jams or, if a bicycle or pedestrian is about to cross the road. This way liability issues could be fairly split up between law- and car-makers.
de6u99er··on A DIY business card that runs Linux (2019)
This was a novel idea once. But nowadays I would stay away from plugging in a usb device of someone I just met.
de6u99er··on Can SGI’s enthusiast community bring IRIX back to life?
It would require some heavy modernization to make it acceptable. Not sure if it could still be called Irix after such an effort.
de6u99er··on DuckDB 0.8
- DuckDB is written in C++

  - SQLite is written in C
I wouldn't consider any of those written in a memory safe language. Although SQLite has been battle hardened over many years, while DuckDB is a relatively new project.

That being said, has been efforts of reimplementing SQLite in a more memory safe language like Rust.

e.g. https://github.com/epilys/rsqlite3

de6u99er··on WhatsApp has been using the microphone in the background
More likely an Android exploit WhatsApp is making use of instead of doing the right thing and reporting it to Google.
de6u99er··on Google Cloud Europe service disruption
AFIK all zones (a, b, and c) have been reported to be down. I'd love to understand ehat happened.
de6u99er··on Microsoft Edge is leaking the sites you visit to Bing
>“Microsoft Edge now has a creator follow feature that is enabled by default,” says Rivera in a conversation with The Verge. “It appears the intent was to notify Bing when you’re on certain pages, such as YouTube, The Verge, and Reddit. But it doesn’t appear to be working correctly, instead sending nearly every domain you visit to Bing.”

I don't believe for a second that this is a bug.

de6u99er··on LSD: Not Even Once
As someone who has been consuming lots of marijuana in the past 25 years, my recommendation is to not consume marijuana when in a bad mood or in stressful situations. I see drugs (including alcohol) as mood amplifiers.
de6u99er··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
I wonder how quickly they can iterate?
de6u99er··on I liked this simple calculus exercise
Nowadays I use Wolfram Alpha for stuff like this.

de6u99er··on OpenAI API keys leaking through app binaries
Not only that, but it makes not much difference if they call the GPT Api directly or through a proxy. Only thing that eould really help is having users register and authenticate through the proxy.
de6u99er··on Distillation of 20 Management and Leadership Books and Resources
A list of those books and resources would be appreciated.
de6u99er··on Ask HN: Recommendations for personal files backup/sync?
I use Google Drive for that.

PC & Mac -> https://www.google.com/drive/download/

Linux integration is a little bit more complicated. Might require a little bit of research.

de6u99er··on The inventor who fell in love with his AI

de6u99er··on Stellantis CEO: There may not be enough raw materials to electrify globe
Future mobility concepts, will most likely result in fully autonmous shared vehicles for urban transportation or the last mile.

E.g. I usually use my car for about 40 minutes every day commuting between home and work. That's 1/35th of 24h and 1/15th of a 10h eindow. Considering that it would need time to pick up someone else, I'd estimate that one car could serve around 25 clients. Also getting from A to be should be quicker because of 15x less traffic on the road, and AI's (hopefully) not driving like idiots.

People will need to get used to not owning their own vehicle.

de6u99er··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
I hate this trend!
de6u99er··on .gitignore that is not checked into repository
haven't known that. will definitely give it a go to hide my ide preferences from others.
