de6u99er··on The hunt for the missing data type
@HN: can we please have less of those "Look I discovered something, most of you already know" articles? Or at least a tag to filter them out!
de6u99er··on Motion blur all the way down (2022)
I love thise interactive tutorials. Since the method and it's parameters can be changed it would ve interesting to see some form of performance impact.
de6u99er··on K8s Service Meshes: The Bill Comes Due
The trick is to know which code you want to maintain yourself and which stuff you want to get off the shelf. Going the off the shelf way, also means being stateless and using distributed transactions with all their pitfalls (eventual consistency, fire and forget, ...).

Good architects will know how and when to do what E.g. start with a modulith instead of a monolith, to ease refactoring into micro-services once user count goes through the roof and vertical scaling won't do it any more.

de6u99er··on Mixed Reality gone in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26052
> So another thing Microsoft abandons just as it starts growing.

I don't see VR/AR growing. Quite the opposite.

de6u99er··on The Big Dummy's Guide to Fidonet (1992)
in the early days of the internet I got introduced to Fidonet by a guy who's nickname was Fido.
de6u99er··on Conditional Git Configuration
You can also configure multiple ssh keys through Github subdomains in your ssh conf file. While github ignores the subdomain your ssh-client will pick the corresponding ssh key bas d on the used subdomain in your repo url.
de6u99er··on Exploiting Undocumented API to Regenerate Google Service Cookies
>Changing the password alone may not be sufficient. The exploit allows the regeneration of authentication cookies even after a password reset, but only once. To fully secure the account, users should log out of all sessions and revoke any suspicious connections.

TL/DR: Change password and log out of all sessions.

That's great. Thank you!
de6u99er··on Niklaus Wirth has died
Great story. Thanks for sharing.

Pascal was the second language after Basic. I was always interested in learning Modula, but picked up Delphi instead.
de6u99er··on AMD's CDNA 3 Compute Architecture
I don't think AMD will be able to compete with NVidia in the neat future because many scientists developing core libraries in the ML/AI space, are getting free or heavily discounted GPUs from NVidia. If they had to buy GPU's from their own or grant money, and pay the same price as regular consumers, the situation might be a different one.

IMHO the way NVidia is infiltrating academics and academia, is highly unethical.

de6u99er··on The OSI Deprogrammer
This is funny

Under: 7.1.2. Poorly understood terminology >This is what happened with “session”. When OSI named this layer, it had nothing to do with sessions in general, but with very specific issues connecting a terminal to a mainframe. [...] What we think of as sessions (as in HTTP) are actually called associations in OSI, and is assigned to the Application Layer #7.

de6u99er··on Show HN: FollowDev, HH-like forum exclusively for software dev-related topics
> The title says 'HH-like forum' so I came here to understand what 'HH' stands for. Seems a typo?

Same here.

Not sure why OP thinks HN is full of politics and business (whatever that means) content.

de6u99er··on macOS Sonoma is available today
Of course the gardware supports it, otherwise I couldn't connect the second rotated screen through HDMI. But I couldn't figure out why OS-X fails to support DP-MST. If it's because they want to push their own screens then shame on Apple.

It's ridiculous that they refuse to support this. Iit's actually backfiring. Peoppe at work laugh when they see me attaching two cables to my Macbook ehile everyone else with different operating systems use their docking stations or daisy chaining. Even old Chromebooks support it.

de6u99er··on macOS Sonoma is available today
Was looking for this. Thank you!
de6u99er··on macOS Sonoma is available today
I hope it can do DisplayPort Multi Stream Transport. Currently I have to connect one screen through TB4, and the other one through HDMI despite the TB4 screen being able to daisy chain through DisplayPort.

One screen is a 32 inch UHD 60Hz monitor and the other one is a 24 inch 2560x1440 90Hz screen which is rotated by 90 degrees.

de6u99er··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
I think Pixel 6 owners are in a good spot. We can wait one more year until production kinks have been ironed out, get a Pixel 8 at a reduced price, and get 6 years of updates out if it. Until next year, Google and other phone makers might be forced by the EU to implement easy to replace batteries.
de6u99er··on Tracking Austrian grocery prices by scraping store sites
I wish paying with the phone would not only transfer how much we paid where. I'd like to get more details like single item prices. This would enable us to track prices ourselves.
de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
American voters don't care what happens in Russia. What they care about is how much money they make and how much they pay for gas. Since the Ukraine conflict Bidenomics has suddenly taken off. At least that's how I here on the old continent see it.
de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
Plenty of NATO interventions, where not a single NATO member was attacked.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NATO_operations

Russias melting permafrost has made many natural resources available. I bet some political do ors want to get their hands on those resources.

de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
It's not a ruse. IMO Russia had two options. Allow NATO membership for Ukraine or invade them. I velieve if Putin would have allowed Ukraine to join NATO he would have had an accident qnd someone else would have ordered the invasion of Ukraine.
de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
Coal doesn't work. Many houses in Europe have one gas heating per apartment.
de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
True, but those ports exist now.
de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
I suggest to study this Wikipedia article.

de6u99er··on Putin’s Forever War
I have never said that. But sanctions against Russia have been very good for US gas exports.

Putin had two options. Either allow Ukraine become a NATO member which would have resulted in him being replaced or invading Ukraine.

de6u99er··on Kris Nóva has died
That's brutal because it was unexpected, and her loved ones could not say good bye.
de6u99er··on ChimeraOS: Instantly turn any PC into a gaming console
I guess it has to do with their lack of open source drivers, and I bet you can install NVidia or Intel drivers by yourself.
