ddlutz··on Trying to get past the 500 nits limit of the MacBook Pro (and failing)
For anybody like me not 'getting it', the for me at least on my m1 pro macbook pro needed to use this in Safari, chrome unfortunately wasn't showing the white text.
ddlutz··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
I don't have FSD enabled on my Model 3, but I have the FSD visualization preview. I'd be terrified of FSD at night. During the day I don't see it have any issues registering cars and other obstacles, but during night it barely detects anything.
ddlutz··on SimpleDB: A Basic RDBMS Built from Scratch
I thought for sure that this post was about this simpledb.
ddlutz··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
Why not use the CDN of the cloud provider you are on? Azure Storage > Azure CDN
ddlutz··on Let's Settle This
IDEs with vim bindings is the way to go

How many holes does a donut have? What if you keep stretching the donut making it taller?
ddlutz··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
Wow, this is completely accurate. Has temp working job on college campus, information from when I was at Microsoft and Google. Interesting from Microsoft it just contains my base salary and cash bonus, but Google has base salary, cash bonus, and RSU grants as "Other Income".
ddlutz··on I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months
Interesting, I had two amazon offers and no signing bonus was like that. They essentially just prorated it out over the first two years as extra monthly income to be equivalent to the stock you would get in the later two years.
ddlutz··on Don't Waste the Good Days
Well paying for flight, hotels, eating out, etc will cost several thousand more than just staying at home playing video games.
ddlutz··on Chrome client “variations” can be used to identify you (2020)
Borg is the name of the backend service that runs a lot of Google software - https://research.google.com/pubs/pub43438.html?hl=es#:~:text....
ddlutz··on Djinn Split Keyboard
I would love something like that, either touch trackpad or some trackball with easy way to left click and right click. No more switching between "two different input devices".
ddlutz··on Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy
It's not clear to me really where to start for somebody like that me that has advanced CS knowledge but knows nothing about robots. Still just start from the basics?
ddlutz··on ECB sees rising risk that housing bubble will burst
With spending 300k seven years ago what is the value of the property now? Would't be surprised if it's 600k+. Let's assume you put 60k into downpayment and maybe you've gotten another 40k in principal put in from payments. That's 400k of equity you can put into a new place.

Sure this is technically option 2, but it's not as terrible if you compare to people that are buying now without having equity grown for years to help purchase.

ddlutz··on When did computer science theory get so hard?
This has happened a few times, I've ended up reading research papers of people I work(ed) with professionally.
ddlutz··on We saved millions in SSD costs by upgrading our filesystem
I wonder how well Postgres is up to the task of analytical queries? Most people use Postgres for OLTP, maybe they are running some version of it that uses a column store?
ddlutz··on Pop _OS to use it own desktop environment, written in Rust
You could say this about anything that has been around right? Basically an argument to say "Don't innovate, X has been around for a long time and works!"
ddlutz··on A bug that doesn’t exist on x86: Exploiting an ARM-only race condition
It's widely accepted you should almost always use some smart pointer like unique_ptr or shared_ptr, and even sometimes the the unpopular weak_ptr depending on your use case.
ddlutz··on To learn a new language, read its standard library
I think the Scheme quote is interesting, because it almost applies to C.

Most people consider learning C hard (for example, compared to python), but it is an extremely small language with a "standard library so small it's pretty much useless".

ddlutz··on Apple M1 Max Geekbench Score
Not just an odd comparison. I don't think it's a valid comparison at all.
ddlutz··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
This is me. 28, had mild hearing loss for about 3 years now in one ear due to a bad ear infection. I can get by fine, however I'm definitely missing out on a lot of "richness" of sound. I can't hear high pitched noises, or subtle differences between noises in my left ear at all. And everything in general is a little muted. Since I can hear perfectly find out of my right ear I'm not convinced spending thousands of dollars is worth it.

I would spend $10,000+ if my tinnitus could be cured permanently though.

ddlutz··on Scaling Indexing and Search – Algolia New Search Architecture
While you probably aren't using B+-tree indexes like databases, can you use a setup like them were you can create a "paged" data structure and use some buffer pool to bring pages in and out?
ddlutz··on Show HN: OtterTune – Automated Database Tuning Service for RDS MySQL/Postgres
Looks like only AWS is supported now. Will there be GCP Cloud SQL support? Seems very useful!
ddlutz··on Ask HN: Are you also getting extremely obvious spam bypassing Gmail's filters?
Yes, I noticed the same thing the past few weeks, and it seems increasingly bad. I'm really surprised because 10+ years before this I don't recall even a single spam getting past the filter.
ddlutz··on Groundbreaking arm amputation surgery makes a ‘phantom’ hand seem real
Interesting I run in my dreams quite often. I didn’t know some people couldn’t. However in my dreams I can’t really punch, all punches feel like they have no “weight” to them if that makes sense.
ddlutz··on GM tells some Bolt owners to park 50 feet away from other cars
Some people have gotten buy backs. GM Says that a buyback is an option for me, but I have to wait 5-7 business days (from a few days ago) to speak into more details.

ddlutz··on App store payments will have increased competition
I argue it has a hidden gambling aspect with raids. Most of the desirable pokemon comes from raids, and of course you want desirable stats. There are about 3 levels of gambling here that get people hooked in:

1. Catching the pokemon at all. There is only a probability with each throw that the ball catches the pokemon 2. Getting good stats. It's easy to get mediocre stats from the raid pokemon, which are randomly generated and not known unitl catch time. 3. Getting a shiny. It's something like a 5% chance from a raid that the pokemon will be shiny. And of course you don't know until after you spend your raid pass.

Niantic gives you only 1 free raid pass a day, so in order to get more chances at shinies and good stat pokemon you need to spend money.

ddlutz··on Man Robbed of 16 Bitcoin Sues Young Thieves’ Parents
That seems like a crude way of thinking about this. It's more like "This is my property, it was stolen, give me my property back."
ddlutz··on B-Trees: More Than I Thought I'd Want to Know
for YEARS that tutorial has been stuck on "Alright. One more step toward a fully-operational btree implementation. The next step should be splitting internal nodes. Until then!". Must not be worth the time to finish writing the tutorial.
ddlutz··on B-Trees: More Than I Thought I'd Want to Know
I've seen quite a few database courses have you implement them, as they are the backbone for many database systems.
