dcsan··on Fly.io has GPUs now
Can fly run cog files like replicate uses? Would be nice to take those pre packaged models run them here with the same prediction API

Maybe cos it's replicate they might be hesitant to adopt it but it does seem to make things a lot smoother Even with lambalabs' lambdastack I still hit cuda hell https://github.com/replicate/cog

dcsan··on FFmpeg 6.1 released
Are there any good ts/js wrappers for this that make producing animations and transitions a bit easier? I find the cli args syntax hard to work with. Like pythons moviePy

https://pypi.org/project/moviepy/

dcsan··on Reading SEC filings using LLMs
Could you ask an LLM if they were persuaded by a speaker of one side of a debate as a method of evaluation? Ie the bot's before and after opinion based on fine-tuning with the pro and con arguments?

I was also thinking about a society of bots type application where you could have autonomous bot researchers, debaters, judges and audience. Would be interesting to feed in the topics and grab some popcorn

dcsan··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Sequence Diagrams in MermaidJS
mermaid is mostly client side rendered in JS, so it's surprising it doesn't have a very well fleshed out API to handle interactivity. Also it's a pain to render to PNGs, you need a full headless browser/puppeteer to run mermaid-cli.

adding links + tooltips: https://jsfiddle.net/s37cjoau/3/

I did an eval of some other options for more dynamic apps including react-flow, cytoscapeJS etc. https://github.com/dcsan/autoapps/issues/1

congrats on learning some new tools! it is a bit 'astronaut architected' but you seem to have a history of building stuff and asking for feedback, that will always result in learning fast. hope you got some useful replies here!

a much simpler build system that's easy for people to adopt might have a higher chance of getting initial traction, and then you can add the layers only when they're needed. See YAGNI (You Ain't Gonna Need It) https://martinfowler.com/bliki/Yagni.html

dcsan··on Ask HN: Why does Apple refuse to add window snapping to macOS?
Raycast has some nice keyboard shortcuts for window layout.
dcsan··on Discord’s username change is causing discord
For in person why don't they add a qrcode scanner or shareable URL just like they do for servers?

RN what I do is share a qrcode for a small server that I admin and then friend/add ppl as they join. Totally not needed tbh.

Generally discord does a great job with onboarding, hope they figure this one out.

dcsan··on Language Learning with Netflix
Love this on the desktop, but it's there a way to use on an ipad - where I watch most movies. Or an app that will show subtitles on an alt lang than the spoken track?
dcsan··on Show HN: Benthos Studio – A modern take on Yahoo Pipes
Smart contracts do provide a stable (immutable!) api which is designed for composable functionality, although it’s not used across different peoples contracts that much. A pipes like UI that binds things together could be interesting. If the connective contracts are also on chain you could in theory develop flash bots that execute everything in the same block.
dcsan··on Show HN: General Task, a free task manager for builders (beta)
I like the look of it, and "single-tasking" is great. It also can block out your calendar so you get less random meetings popup.

But I can't see any info on pricing? I see "free to start!" but always worried about roach motel business models - esp since the TOS is soooo detailed this doesn't seem like a happy hacker side project? Am I the product, or just too cynical nowadays?

update: after reg i see:

> That means we will be keeping our personal productivity solution free forever.

so i guess that means you're banking on a 2B version later?

dcsan··on Ask HN: What is the best AI text-to-art generator?
https://beta.dreamstudio.ai/dream also you can get API keys there
dcsan··on Imagen: An AI system that creates photorealistic images from input text
Can you talk more about the prompt augmentation the midjourney is doing behind the scenes? It's certainly true that you can put in a two-word phrase like "Time travelers" and get an amazing result back, which reveals just how much your prompt is getting dropped into a prompt soup that also gives it that midjourney look by default.
dcsan··on Datadog dashboard for the Texas power grid
Since batteries are always the issue... How inefficient is mechanical storage? For example using electricity to just raise a heavy mass then as that lowers it can produce power. It seems that would be cheap to build at scale with the chance for almost unlimited storage.

I have to assume there would be a more than 50% loss through the process, hope someone on hn can comment. Maybe it's not worth it when you can tap into unlimited sunlight the next day.

dcsan··on SmartContract That Simulate AnimalCrossing (Nintendo Game)
so did this get a takedown or did you just decide to close the repo? It looked pretty interesting for the time it was public.
dcsan··on Show HN: EdgeDB 1.0
I love the look of this, but I've been burned by going all in on exciting projects before (rethink, merb,...) It might be a good idea to add some more info on the team behind, if they have funding to continue etc. MagicStack and uvloop are really worth connecting the dots with.
dcsan··on Is BI dead? – On dismantling data's ship of Theseus
Wonderful comment. But trying to automate actions (write/modify underlying data or system) is often a hugely complex task compared to a visualization that allows you to form an insight. Have you found enough common/repeatable examples that you can automate or develop some type of actions template? What is your business domain?
dcsan··on Breaking down a ripple animation in JavaScript
That's a really cool site. Almost like demo scene in JS. Any other similar places?
dcsan··on Why Japan Celebrates Christmas with KFC (2016)
Starting to do things for halloween? Halloween in Shibuya is probably the most crazy thing I've ever seen and it's not all foreigners!
dcsan··on Launch HN: Explo (YC W20) – Customer-facing dashboards and reports
How does this compare with Google datastudio and other saas dashboard tools? Tableau and others are more like native apps that have a separate overpriced "shareable" option but there are already plenty of saas tools.
dcsan··on Clubhouse closes new round of funding that would value app at $4B
Discord is more of a channels metaphor than rooms. But actually discord just released a UI tweak to do a clubhouse like layout, so yes.
dcsan··on UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal
Can you explain more the profit motive?

> posh muppets in the ERG stand to make a wad of cash from their crony mates

dcsan··on The first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death
I was living in China for the last 2.5 years and within that time span the quality of air in Beijing went from absolutely unbearable crossing over the 500 to blue skies almost every day. Probably one too many politician's kids died from lung problems. The other interesting thing in the bad days was how they could turn on a dime. When there was an important political event or international visits the air pollution would magically get better for a few days (coinciding with the international internet and VPN connectivity getting dramatically worse...). They would just shut down all of the factories in the area.

When there's a political will there is definitely a way.

dcsan··on Eric Engstrom, co-creator of DirectX, has died
Japan the land of paper business cards.. and the lovegetty! Does anybody remember the poken which you could carry on your keyring. Touch two together and there was a kind of lovering glow, to exchange contact info. Insert the usb side into laptop to download the contact information. It almost hit critical mass in Japan. Poken parties in Tokyo were fun. Such a pre-covid alt reality...
dcsan··on Supabase Beta: Auth, SQL Editor, Benchmarks
is there any way to get typechecking on supabase queries? eg if using typescript? the queries seems to be just strings:

https://supabase.io/docs/client/select

dcsan··on Supabase Beta: Auth, SQL Editor, Benchmarks
Good question! not OP but one of the projects here provides a full PG api if you are self-hosting. Presumably the plan is to provide a similar but secure API for supabase hosted instances in future?

https://github.com/supabase/pg-api

dcsan··on Poll: Have you experienced depressive symptoms over the past two weeks?
the last few days in the US were a rollercoaster but anxiety is not depression.
dcsan··on Show HN: LibreASR – An On-Premises, Streaming Speech Recognition System
how real-time do you need it? if you use a streaming API you can even use google and there isn't too much lag, and it's continuous.

Agora also talk about this, but I haven't used it myself https://www.agora.io/en/

dcsan··on Show HN: LibreASR – An On-Premises, Streaming Speech Recognition System
would it be possible to train on any of the more recent Text to speech engines out there? some of them are very realistic.

this would give you absolutely perfect sync down to the word, I assume... I don't know about the cost if you paid ratecard though, perhaps you can do some partnership with them since yours is a symetrical product

dcsan··on Show HN: LibreASR – An On-Premises, Streaming Speech Recognition System
and it's maybe a dig at Macron's accent at the same time :D although the author is a student in germany. Anyway you should join the Discord, we discussed this there too...
