dcormier··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
They were unit testing when they needed to be integration testing.
dcormier··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
The author of the linked article mentions a couple of times to lock the doors for the car to go to sleep properly.
dcormier··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2023)
I poked at a couple of these listings, and some seem interesting, but I didn’t see any compensation ranges.
dcormier··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
I've enjoyed Planet Money for a long time. https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510289/planet-money
dcormier··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
> The other reason was that any new show seemed to be just so... Sad? Depressing? Melancholy?

Same. I couldn't do it anymore. I eventually realized that when I seek out specific media to consume, I need it to be less depressing than I found that show to be.

dcormier··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
> And how can someone be clever enough to be a software engineer and not clever enough to figure out crystals in bags taped to cables do not affect music quality.

After living through the past several years in the US, this is not a question I ask.

dcormier··on MailCrab
That’s nice since MailHog seems dead. I’ve had PRs open for their SMTP server package for years. One for a bug, the other to support Unicode recipient addresses.

Once I got one of their attention on Twitter and they said they would have it looked at the next week, but nothing seemed to happen.

dcormier··on Eggspensive
I wish it were more colorblind friendly. ~8% of males are colorblind. I’m one of them. The colors in the middle of the scale are hard to make out.
dcormier··on Rejected emoji proposals
The submission guidelines have changed over time. I would assume that, at the time, the proposals _did_ meet the guidelines.
dcormier··on My grandmother died at home, just as she wanted. It cost $145,000
Do you think the US healthcare system is better than the UKs?
dcormier··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
Today I ordered a physical item from an online store.

The checkout page asked if I wanted to tip the employees, with buttons for preset percentages, and an option to enter a custom amount.

I considered aborting my order.

dcormier··on Twitter's API is down?
Narrator: They are not.
dcormier··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
> It's a whole other ball game now. Hint: a player just landed this week.

What?

dcormier··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
Are there any comparable alternatives to Pebble even now? I’ve yet to see one, but I haven’t followed the market very closely since I stopped using one.
dcormier··on The Problem with Go
Sounds like the tests around what you were trying to achieve with your changes weren’t complete enough, possibly?
dcormier··on Ask HN: Carrier “lost” my number in a port request
Here’s the link: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/requests/new?tic...
dcormier··on Apple security bounty upgraded
They mean that the device is in a state where it’s locked after having been unlocked at least once after booting.

That first unlock after booting decrypts a bunch of things.

dcormier··on Signal says it won’t compromise on encryption
You have on Android, but not iOS.
dcormier··on Australia's weird little time zone (2008)
That’s what I expected this article was going to be about. Lord Howe Island’s DST adjustment is 30 minutes rather than 60.
dcormier··on Pocket Casts goes open source
I don’t know if AntennaPod has it, but with syncing you also get a desktop (macOS/Windows/web) app. I use this to I listen while work, and switch to my phone at other times.
dcormier··on Reverse Engineer’s Perspective on the Boeing 787 ‘51 days’ Directive
I’m at 356 days of uptime on my MacBook Pro. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
dcormier··on Dark Sky iOS app will no longer work from Dec 31
In iOS 16 it’s greatly improved. You can now get the predicted hourly temperature, UV index, wind, rainfall, feels like temperature, humidity, visibility, and atmospheric pressure.
dcormier··on GM offers to buy out Buick dealers that don't want to invest in EVs
Most cars in the US are bigger than most cars you'd find in most of the world.
dcormier··on Perfectly hard-boiled eggs via steaming method on induction cooktops
His steaming method has been my go-to for years.

dcormier··on AdGuard publishes the first ad blocker built on Manifest V3
> While I appreciate the work AdBlock does, supporting MV3 is ludicrous. If no ad block extension supported it, it would be dead on arrival

Only to people like us. The amount of tech-savvy people I see not using an ad blocker is surprising. As a user of an ad blocker, I definitely feel like I’m in a small minority in the real world.

dcormier··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
You’re right. I should’ve left it off. I was frustrated.
dcormier··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
That’s very ableist of you.

About 1 in 12 males are colorblind. I’m in this group.

I find white text on a bright green background very difficult to read.

dcormier··on GCC Rust Approved by GCC Steering Committee
Oh, I hadn’t seen that. That’s exciting.
dcormier··on Dependency injection in Go with Uber-go/fx
I've used this framework. The exceptions being deferred until runtime were really frustrating.

If you really want to use DI in golang, for some reason, wire[1] at least still gives you type safety and compile-time failures.

1. https://github.com/google/wire

dcormier··on Dependency injection in Go with Uber-go/fx
Having used both, I very much prefer wire's compile-time satisfaction vs fx's runtime satisfaction.

If I miss something, I'd much rather know when I try to compile instead of waiting 'til a specific code path that uses a missing dependency fails.
