dcormier··on Using ARG in a Dockerfile – beware the gotcha
I remember tripping over this. It was frustrating.
dcormier··on Equinox.space
I enjoyed it, but in Safari on iOS there was no sound at any point. I checked my device volume. I toggled the game option for sound on and off.

It just occurred to me that it may be because I have my phone ringer set to silent. That is indeed what caused it, which is not great as I don't want notifications to be making noise.

It also felt slightly too zoomed in (I even attempted to zoom out using my fingers).

I'd never heard of it before clicking through.
dcormier··on Zuckerberg personally rejected Meta's proposals to improve teen mental health
If the feature is harmful to mental health, then removing it is indeed a good decision.

People complain about all kinds of change. That doesn't make the change wrong or mean that it shouldn't be done.

dcormier··on SpaceX Starship Super Heavy Project at the Boca Chica Launch Site
I have enjoyed watching a new launch provider emerge, EVs become a real thing, and him being forced to buy Twitter.
dcormier··on Astronauts and Area 51: the Skylab Incident (2006)
> Wasn't that why Vandenberg was fitted-out to launch shuttles?

I don't know about DoD operating their own shuttles with their own crews, but my understanding was that part of the pitch that got Shuttle approved was that they could do polar launches from Vandenberg to deploy Earth observation (read: spy) satellites. Or match the orbit of, observe, and even capture satellites belonging to other countries in polar orbits. It helped get DoD's backing for the program.

Being able to launch from Vandenberg as well as Cape Canaveral opens up more orbital options.

dcormier··on Astronauts and Area 51: the Skylab Incident (2006)
Now that's a detail I hadn't run across before.
dcormier··on Astronauts and Area 51: the Skylab Incident (2006)
That makes me think of the near loss of the classified STS-27 mission.

In iOS 17, there are two related settings for this is under Settings Emergency SOS.
dcormier··on Chromebooks will get 10 years of automatic updates
That’s great, Google.

Now for your phones.

dcormier··on U.S. Government Is Monitoring All Global Entry Members Daily
Not just the border; Global Entry members have PreCheck access domestically.

The article suggests TSA also does some sort of check of regular PreCheck members when they travel. I wonder how that check is different.

dcormier··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
Darknet Diaries had an episode about them a while back. It’s a good listen (as that podcast always is).

dcormier··on RFC 9446 Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
> They're going to beat the drum until Justice Thomas resigns or stops being openly corrupt, which may be a very long time.

I don’t expect either of those things to happen, sadly. If everything stays as it is, he will remain in office and continue his behavior. He’ll stay there until he dies.

dcormier··on ASML EUV lithography machine could keep Moore’s Law on track
I recently had an opportunity to chat with a machinist who works for a shop that makes some parts for ASML’s machines. He showed me a picture of a couple of parts he finished that day. He said they weighed about a hundred pounds sitting there on the table, but at the acceleration they experience in the machine, they weigh roughy the same as a Toyota Tacoma.

Twenty minutes sounds like a long time to walk in, get something you already know you want, pay, and walk out.
dcormier··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
> I'm curious what the percentage of people accessing the site via the official app vs all other avenues was before all this shit

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said 95% of iOS app users use the official app.

> You go to the App Store, you type in Reddit, you get two options, right? There’s Apollo. You go to one, it’s my business, and you look at our ads, use our products. That’s 95 percent of our iOS users. The rest go to Apollo[…]

They didn’t even have to reverse course for this to work out. Just give a reasonable runway before beginning to charge for the API (to give third party clients enough time to adjust their subscription customers who may have just paid for a year), and charge a reasonable price.

Two months before starting to charge $0.24 per 1,000 requests is nothing but unreasonable.

I wish Reddit had just plainly said, “We don’t want third party clients anymore.” This whole thing would’ve been cleaner. Still bad, but I don’t think it would’ve been nearly as ugly.

Several years ago I created an account there and it was banned before I even logged in. I appealed but never heard anything. I never figured out why was it was banned. I couldn’t find anything offensive in the name. At least, not in English (the only language I know).

This feels like something (former?) malware researchers might do. It’s entertaining when they reverse engineer malware and find bugs.
