dclusin··on Bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable as BTC price falls to average cost of mining
The larger miners are using something called an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Hobbyist retail miners use gpus. the big farms you see in new organization photos are using silicon explicitly built for btc mining and only btc mining. Or a handful of proof of work algorithms. But still specialized.

The functionality is burned into the silicon at the factory and cannot be changed. There are also specialized devices that can give you the benefits of an asic and can also be changed and reprogrammed. these are called field programmable gate arrays (fpgas). Large scale miners do not use gpus or fpgas due to cost and efficiency reasons.

dclusin··on Browser Extension to Bypass Media Sites Paywalls
Due to interchange fees on the major processing networks it is not practical to charge less then $1. Fees per charge are something like 30 cents plus percentage of transaction.
dclusin··on The pressure to censor all layers of the legacy Internet stack is intense
People need to know how to connect to a system or service. Once it becomes large enough to be the target of censorship the technologies used are relatively moot. This is much easier with the financial system since the on ramps are so tightly controlled. Crypto currency has not helped with this.
dclusin··on A drug that cures alcoholism may be the next anti-anxiety medication
Kind of like vcs and startup founders who use their status to “mentor” women in tech just to try and get in their pants. Predation is not unique or exclusive to any organization or group.

dclusin··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
Same. My shower thought has been, has this affected the implementation timelines of safety features in traditional cars? The general public seems to think we’re going to have self driving cars any day now, but anyone reasonably well informed can probably think of a dozen edge cases they haven’t even begun solving yet.

So I wonder, have regulators stalled or stop pushing for new safety features under the false belief that we’re going to have self driving cars any day now, so what’s the hurry? I feel like it has, although admittedly it’s just a feeling and I’ve done no research.

Collision avoidance systems are our generations seat belt. It’s still pretty shocking to me this tech isn’t mandated as a safety feature yet considering the very real potential to save lives from distracted driving.

Has the pr shit storm all these companies shamelessly capitalize on affected this technology implementation?

We generally think of these sorts of lies as harmless and a result of overly ambitious visionaries. But I think in a real way this is the type of thing that could cost lives, in the sense that if regulators understood they are 20-30 years away from mass market, they might actually push for more safety reforms which could save lives.

dclusin··on Ask HN: Should people move away from cities?
I don’t know tbh, but I think having lots of small individual plots you probably lose economies of scale. Especially if you’re growing in dense urban areas there’s probably more efficient use for the land. Although vertical farming could maybe offset this.

Mostly talking out of my ass. I’m sure there’s someone on here with the answers you seek.

dclusin··on Ask HN: Should people move away from cities?
Buying food from farms that get economies of scale would probably be less carbon intensive per unit than individuals tending their own plots. Those farms could also ensure they minimize/offset their own carbon footprints.
dclusin··on Ask HN: Should people move away from cities?
There's a difference between saying hey, it'd be cool if you move to cities and intentionally increasing the prices of raw materials people use (like gas prices in california) and preventing the development of projects which make those things cheaper. Implementing policies that say hey fuck you and the way that you're living and pretending its the only way forward generally doesn't win people over.

When the prices of basic necessities increase people affected by the price increases don't usually think to themselves, well gee! I'll just move to those wonderful cities I've heard so much about full of those people who I have nothing in common with culturally. It's not like there's mutual distrust and is totally gonna be such a great time!

dclusin··on Chrome 0day is being exploited now for CVE-2022-1096; update immediately
The server motherboard I just bought has this as well. Thankfully access to it is at least isolated to a separate network port. I'm debating supergluing it closed or maybe physically disconnect the port somehow.
dclusin··on Chrome 0day is being exploited now for CVE-2022-1096; update immediately
It feels to me like the entire os security model is broken and leaving security up to applications even well resourced ones like chrome is a fools errand.

Is there anyway we could benefit from starting again and building a secure os from first principles? Isn’t this one of Fuscias goals?

dclusin··on Ask HN: Should people move away from cities?
I don’t find issues with your views but I think it’s completely untenable to make this happen politically and will either result in global war or the collapse of our civilization. Kind of saying the same thing twice I suppose.

If the people that say they support sustainable living actually understood what is meant by that phrase almost none of them would support it. It’s not just billionaires giving up their jets as is the popular notion, but as you point out, basically giving up everything Americans consider staples of middle class life.

I think we’ve got a better chance inventing a giant machine that removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than we do of convincing people to follow your way of life. And climate change is just the tip of the ice berg.

dclusin··on Global chip shortage may soon turn into an oversupply crisis
A majority of Americans cannot afford an unexpected expense of $1,000, let alone $16,500. The fact that its cheaper than the amount of gas you'd pay over that lifetime is irrelevant considering most Americans are not rich enough to shop comparatively like that. It's expensive to be poor.

dclusin··on A cautionary tale from the streets of San Francisco
The thinking is that it's not an isolated incident and lots of PD's & hospitals did this. It's hard to prove because no one will admit to it, and the people being sent aren't always the most reliable witnesses.

Yes but I've only received it in writing usually only after verbally accepting the offer, not before to play off of each other.
dclusin··on Google’s Answer to Overheated Job Market: Demanding Proof of Rival Offers
How do devs ask to get offers in writing? It's always been verbal in all the interviews I've had, and they're resistant to putting things in emails.
dclusin··on I completely ignored the front end development scene for 6 months. It was fine
As a back end Dev it looks like build tooling has largely materialized into a few choices and doesn’t change as fast.
dclusin··on I completely ignored the front end development scene for 6 months. It was fine
When non-programmers think of developers they always imagine front end devs. Rarely do they understand the distinction or specialization of programming roles.
dclusin··on Rethinking Climate Change: The path to 90% emissions reductions by 2035

dclusin··on Computer Models of Civilization Offer Routes to Ending Global Warming
It doesn't make sense to risk the lives of billions of people just to try and stick it to the oil companies. The conclusion that is implied by this type of sentiment is, "well if we don't give them a life raft then they will be forced to go out of business." The conclusion that if things get bad enough people will stop acting in self interest and start considering the greater good is questionable. The more realistic reality is imo people are going to continue to burn fossil fuels because it benefits them economically to do so. The situation 10 to 20 years from now is probably going to look more similar to today than not. Some countries make progress, but others increase their emissions.

Internal combustion engines are too well understood and wide spread to conceivably ban. Our planet will boil if we don't develop carbon sequestering capability at scale. It doesn't seem fair to me to risk the lives of all those people that will die from climate related problems just because we don't like the oil companies.

dclusin··on Computer Models of Civilization Offer Routes to Ending Global Warming
Political interest groups vociferously opposing allocation of funds commensurate with the scale of the problem probably also isn't helping. Heaven forbid we do anything that might help the oil companies.
