dclusin··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
I think it would be difficult to find a majority of people who support minors having unrestricted access to pornography and shock content. The sticking point seems to be in the implementation details and true intentions of the people behind the initiatives that gives people pause.
dclusin··on My pay went from $240k to $0
Jury nullification doesn’t exactly have a spotless history. Although I do agree with the sentiment.
dclusin··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
I recently bought age restricted materials online and had to upload a picture of my photo id with a selfie to a 3rd party verifier. Similar to what crypto currency verification goes through.

I think the underlying disagreement/debate is whether or not these initiatives are in good faith. Any implementation of this is going to be imperfect and a motivated person will probably be able to get around this. So the debate, I think, is, if we implement this are we going to incrementally improve it? Or is it just a pretext to point to and say, hey look, this can never work perfectly, so we should ban x, y, and z.

dclusin··on Reddit will begin charging for access to its API

dclusin··on AI clones teen girl’s voice in $1M kidnapping scam: ‘I’ve got your daughter’
Ai generated news has actually been a thing for a while now. The news agencies that use it still do fact check the output.
dclusin··on Mark Zuckerberg abandons metaverse as shiny new toy appears
Maybe I’ll finally get ads for products I haven’t already purchased yet.
dclusin··on Sam Bankman-Fried Is Charged with Foreign Bribery
Violation of the Foreign corrupt practices act carries a prison sentence up to 5 years and $100k of fines. This is not Sam's year.
dclusin··on ChatGPT Opened a New Era in Search. Microsoft Could Ruin It
My personal prediction is that llm powered search will be as terrible as google search once people figure out how to game it. In a way probably worse because it will only give one answer instead of a list of answers that you can pick through.
dclusin··on Why are developers expected to estimate tasks at all?
Assuming you’re pretty close to the hardware? As a standard backend web service dev os/library/device bugs are incredibly unlikely and usually defective application software is to blame. Not saying it doesn’t happen, but I can’t recall in recent memory this sort of thing happening as high up in the stack I work.
dclusin··on Ask HN: What are you working on to become a better programmer?
In addition to this I think picking problems that you don’t immediately know how to solve but is within your wheel house is important. Also sticking with a single problem or domain. Constantly starting and never completing things doesn’t expose you to the next iteration of challenges.
dclusin··on Ahrefs saved $400m in 3 years by not going to the cloud
They haven’t included an amortized cost breakdown with depreciation of hardware including backup. Or the geographically local personnel required (data center remote hands or dedicated employee that gets the call?). Even still I suspect it’s still probably cheaper.

Also it looks like these are retail prices. You can get cost savings by negotiating but I’m sure there’s an NDA required.

dclusin··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
I disagree with the implicit assumption that llms can’t be gamed. There’s simply too much money to be made for that to remain true.
dclusin··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
The technical/organizational details around implementation of this and how it came to be realized would probably also be interesting to a readership as nerdy as hn. I think I’ve seen a few of these posts but can’t seem to remember them.

dclusin··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Seniglutide has been getting a lot of press lately.
dclusin··on Ask HN: How to come up with ideas for micro side projects?
Or the side project you work on won’t be successful but you can reuse pieces of it for other projects. Code doesn’t stop working just because a product didn’t materialize.
dclusin··on Sam Bankman-Fried's secret 'backdoor' discovered, FTX lawyer says
Have they punished the total number of customer deposits? They keep saying they found $x billion in assets. But no mention of the liabilities or the delta between the two.
dclusin··on Ask HN: Has a life coach ever worked for you?
What about pastor or shaman?
dclusin··on ‘Breakthrough’ obesity drugs that have stunned researchers
If he’s not exercising and is largely sedentary then 1400 calories for an adult male is a serious deficit, but not extreme. If he added in an hour of high intensity interval training or something that would be extreme and potentially hazardous.
dclusin··on Ask HN: What's a build vs. buy decision that you got wrong?
Definitely had this happen in recent memory. Also the thing to be careful about here from experience is you still need to qa the contractors deliverables. Team had a contractor delivering features and it turns out what was “delivered” many times didn’t actually work. Wasted several months of my engineering time babysitting and validating said contractor. Net result was wasted time and money as we just ended up reimplementing ourselves.
dclusin··on Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda Research, pleads guilty to seven offences
Also the thing to consider as well is that any management level trust position in a white collar setting is off limits to her for many years after that as well. On account of people being slow to entrust ex-cons with responsibility.
dclusin··on Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda Research, pleads guilty to seven offences
Leniency is a relative term. It's relative to the size of the harm, number of victims, her centrality to it, etc. If there's a for sure bet to be made here, it's that she will be spending many years in prison for this. Just not her whole life. That's what leniency here means.
dclusin··on Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda Research, pleads guilty to seven offences
She’s still probably not getting out in less than 5 years
dclusin··on Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda Research, pleads guilty to seven offences
Years in prison is not a slap on the wrist.
dclusin··on I found a secret US Government surveillance program (2019)
Is this from actual investigative reporting with sources or just assumed from theoretical capability of tech? Not trying to say this isn’t happening. Just saying that what’s possible and what’s happening don’t always match up.
dclusin··on Former Twitter Employee Sentenced to 42 Months for Acting as a Foreign Agent
Did not realize that these laws apply outside of politics and do not just relate to business with elected officials or members of government.
dclusin··on Deepmind’s AlphaCode conquers coding, performing as well as humans
Almost half the screen real estate on my iPhone SE was white space. I had zero interest in reading something, especially something that long and in depth on a page that wastes so much space for literally nothing.

Typography, layout, and presentation counts for more than coders such as myself will ever admit publicly :)

dclusin··on SEC charges eight social media influencers in $100M stock manipulation scheme
Jim is most likely not trading the securities directly. The money he makes is from his tv contracts and other non-securities trading business probably. Maybe being paid by the companies to shill for them.
dclusin··on Musk’s Twitter reign magnified his brutal management style
Market cap of pre-acquisition twitter is why the company is drowning in so much debt. Had he timed his acquisition better perhaps it would have been more sustainable. Its market value collapsed a few months after he made his acquisition offer. Ergo less debt.
dclusin··on Musk’s Twitter reign magnified his brutal management style
Your suggestion at the end assumes he can predict the future wrt to the collapse of twitters market cap at the time he made the acquisition offer. The reality is he made a binding decision that he was stuck with that looks terrible in hindsight.

I do agree that he could have handled the situation a lot better. But some things are outside his control.
