dblooman··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Can someone who uses Xcode daily compare to say Cursor or VsCode how the developer experience is. Just curious how Apple is keeping up
dblooman··on A type-safe, intuitive Go SDK for building MCP servers with ease and confidence
Have used this for a hackday recently, found it easy to use, even for a complete newcomer.
dblooman··on IBM nearing a buyout deal for HashiCorp, source says
This seemed like an inevitability given the reliance on enterprise customers and the move to maximise the revenue from Terraform with the recent license change. They have made a round of layoffs, so at least some cost saving has already been done to make it more appealing for a sale. The main challenge from an acquisition like this will be maintaining the community around terraform providers, if that drops off, i'm not sure there will be as many developers coming into the hashicorp ecosystem.
dblooman··on Going declarative on macOS with Nix and Nix-Darwin
Last year while working in a nix using team, Golang was lagging behind on nix by a few months, I wanted to use a new feature from the latest version and it lead to some awkward conversations. Nix is not a drop in replacement for homebrew, nor is it fast when it comes to community updates. If you have a small number of packages it works well, but if you only use a few number of packages, why do you need a heavy package manager.
dblooman··on Amazon Q (Preview)
I see a lot of these data providers investing in chat style interfaces too, the main plus with aws is all the extra data a Confluence chat interface won’t have for example. Not sure how you reconcile inconsistent data from say slack and confluence. If they get it right though, this will be the top of the stack for AI for a lot of companies

dblooman··on Retool Database
Are there good video resources for Retool in general, I looked at some youtube videos and found mostly creating a basic database view with a form. Any more substantial examples?
dblooman··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
For those on the M2 Pro mac mini path, the Mac Studio looks a look more appealing. 32GB RAM, Max CPU and more ports for the same money. Will have to wait for benchmarks, but seems like more computer for the money if you upgrade the mini

For those people who use a high workstation, what is the typical price? I feel like people spending more than 10k on a machine must not be bothered, they want the performance

Spotify isn't for you, its for people who want a reasonable sound played on affordable headphones, which it does the best IMO.

dblooman··on 70 First Co-Founder Dates
> 95% of people I talked to were non-technical

One takeaway I found from my experience, using a combination of linkedin and ycombinator co-founder match is just how many non-technical think you are going to be an employee. One meeting was basically 10 minutes of me pitching my idea, then 20 minutes of them asking if I was interested in contract work on an idea that was a year in with no progress. One guy was even like, "look, i need a coder, I can pay you x", not a great way to end a co-founder date.

dblooman··on Ask HN: Do software engineers have leverage?
Companies that let employees leave because they ask for more money is also killing productivity at companies.

If you are a engineer on say 70k and see a senior role at another company for 90k and expect, once promoted at your current company, to see your salary go up, you might be surprised. Some companies just take the lowest band price if the market, 77k for example and will claim that is market rate.

I have seen this many times and if the employee leaves, the company will spend months and thousands plus 10% first year salary to get a replacement and will most likely end up paying more than the original employee was on. I find this kind of process so frustrating as a hiring manager, the amount of time and effort required to go through candidates and interviews just to replace people you shouldn't be losing.

dblooman··on Etsy to buy fashion reseller Depop for $1.63B
Congratulations to the team, I spent a few years at depop, great to see them getting the recognition.

dblooman··on A Product Engineer’s Guide to Platform Engineers (2019)
You would be surprised how few devops/platform engineers cannot write code that would get them a junior position for the code that runs on the platform.
dblooman··on A Product Engineer’s Guide to Platform Engineers (2019)
As a recovering platform engineer, nearly 2 years out of the game, i identify a lot here. My experience is that platform engineers are mostly people who never actually write code for the platform that they have built, other than toy services to test, which are usually written in a language which isn't the company default.

Communication is difficult because platform, like SWEs, are supporting people, but the support is direct, so platform often have a torrent of people asking for things. This is a problem when the SWE doesn't know what they want because they are a newbie out of university, or worse, they know what they want, but don't know how to work the insane platform mono repo that requires 9 items on a checklist to get a IAM permission added that the platform team member told them about in a support slack channel.

I think a lot of platform teams also make their own lives harder by making too many abstractions. If it is impossible for an SWE to add a new resource to the cloud without a platform engineer helping, then platform are always going to be disadvantaged.

Control is also a big issue.

Platform want all the control and believe giving control away is going to cause a disaster. In reality, SWEs want 5% control, just to do the thing they have to ask you as a platform engineer to do anyway. But maybe platform engineers like that hero complex.

dblooman··on Apple Introduces AirTag

dblooman··on I hope work from home continues
I wonder how much of the split is going to be down to parents vs singles. As a single person, I have seen more pushing from managers with kids to go remote, singles or DINKs who live in small apartments in cities are more open to a flexible life style. 3-2 weeks, 60%-40% weeks, whatever people end up calling them seem to be quite a good compromise, but i can see many working 5 days in the office.

There are still a lot of people who treat work seen in a higher regard than work complexity. Someone who is proactive and seen to be, pair programming, mentoring, conducting interviews etc. This can all be done remote, but there might be an advantage to going to the office.

As much as I want to believe that people will work together and both approaches can work, office types will most likely cut out remote types if it isn’t easy to get on with work. I have seen this before COVID, I can see it happening again.

When it comes to it, if you pr whole team is remote, would you feel forced into staying at home and vice versa?

dblooman··on New Alan Turing £50 note design is revealed
>Very few places accept them

I have heard this since I was a kid, in reality, it isn't true, at least not in London. I have never been refused when presenting a £50, not that I have carried them more than a dozen times. Most places that have issues taking them are small merchants who give away too many notes breaking them, so will often ask for a smaller note. When I was in New York once, I went into a CVS and bought $60 of sweets to bring home, the cashier shouted 'bill check' when i presented a $100 bill, so I guess I look more dodgey in the US.

dblooman··on Popular YouTubers who are building their own sites
> Floatplane supports live streaming

I guess for youtube content, this is sometimes needed, but again feels like a lot of effort for limited return. The cloud is one thing, but engineering costs, support etc must eat into profits.

I think from a support point of view, this is where merch sales are actually great, everyone gets something, even if it means that people charge $70 + shipping for a hoodie with a print.

dblooman··on Popular YouTubers who are building their own sites
Floatplane as explained by Linus doesn't make sense, you support a creator by getting videos a little earlier. The cost of building and maintaining a platform like that must be large and seems unnecessary for what is essentially video Patreon.

What is sad is that you see youtubers talking in code on videos, not saying words, self censoring because youtube's detection is so good, videos get demonetised instantly. This is also why most people have seen an Ad in a video for PIA or surfshark or worse, raid shadow legends.
