davotoula··on Nostr is an inclusive communication commons
It's a very rich protocol with many advanced features but here are the basics:

1. Like twitter/x: Follow people, post notes, write comments, use hashtags. Send direct messages (DM) 2. Like Instagram: watch/post just photos or just videos 3. Like ebay: Sell or buy stuff 4. Like reddit: join public communities and post or read 5. Like slack: create private groups for chatting with friends or colleagues 6. Like Skype/zoom: voice and video calls with a person or a group 7. Like twitch with live video streams 8. Like nothing else: send and receive bitcoin (lightning)

davotoula··on Nostr is an inclusive communication commons
But part of the protocol is that user profiles also list the relays where to find their content (where their posts go to) and a second user connects to those relays to fetch their content directly?
davotoula··on Android 15 may make it harder for sideloaded apps to get sensitive permissions
+1 for freezing unused apps. Would lower the attack surface nicely!
davotoula··on Unplug Your Laptop Now, or It Will Stay Plugged in Forever
I disagree. 2022 mbp. Always plugged in... 5 charge cycles in total.

It seldom charges while plugged in. Even when down to 80% it alerts me it's not charging because I seldom use the battery.

Apple could change this behaviour silently and mess it up but for now it's perfect for my needs.

davotoula··on Tell HN: Goodbye HTML Gmail
That would explain why they added selection of multiple emails (after 10 years of request) for deletion im the app.

It was the only feature I was using the basic html for.

davotoula··on Pentax K-3 III Monochrome: A DSLR Just for B&W Photo Lovers
I thought b&w only was a gimmick until I saw the results. Removing various colour components from the camera allows for sharper and more light sensitive b&w photos... Also more b&w tones imo.

davotoula··on Booking a Ryanair flight via an online travel agent might hold a nasty surprise
Funny story. I have an email that keeps being flagged as "booked through an agent" even though I book directly through ryanair official app.

3 last bookings were flagged.

Only found out after numerous online chats and a call after 40 minute hold.

Ryanair has some of the best direct routes in Europe and often you get a bargain price. You get what you pay for.

davotoula··on Google Maps' Moat
I wish they introduced a "motorcycle" vehicle type. At least for cities, it makes a big difference in arrival time estimations.
davotoula··on Identity Thieves Hijack Cellphone Accounts to Go After Virtual Currency
This was raised by Kraken back in November 2016. Shortly afterwards I removed mobile phone as 2FA from all my accounts.

The simple fact is that I don't own my mobile number; the mobile operator does. As such I should not use it as 2fa.

davotoula··on Hacker Steals $8.4M Worth of Ethereum from Veritaseum Platform
Not all ICOs are the same.

Their parameters (for example is the token for utility or just for speculation) vary.

There is a test in law that people can apply to try and tell whether a specific ICO is a security or not: the Howey test.

davotoula··on Hacker Steals $8.4M Worth of Ethereum from Veritaseum Platform
A very good question for which the answer was NO for a long time.

Prism is a live service using Ethereum smart contract(s).

It is from the Shapeshift people and is a kind of "digital asset portfolio". You can invest in many types of digital assets without having to hold them.

People are spending real money on this Ethereum smart contract.

I find it frustrating bookmarking and/or sharing the AMP url with others.

Ideally it would save / share the original URL, not the AMP url.

davotoula··on Ask HN: For those programming 10+ years, what do you wish you knew 4 years in?
Test driven development.

Continuous integration first - first line of code second.

Understanding that writing code is a small percentage of my day - then there is testing, designing, writing docs, deploying, automating, infrastructure configuring, discussing with stakeholders,

Learning multiple languages - especially from different families (procedural, functional, scripting, low level, etc).

davotoula··on Let them paste passwords
Preventing copy/paste is a pet peeve of mine. Hey websites, you are breaking the browser/os functionality!

Another annoyance is having to enter 2nd,4th,7th etc letter of the password using a dropdown. ARrrgh.

davotoula··on Western Union admits to aiding wire fraud, to pay $586M
Just a shame they started blocking transfers to (reputable and legit) bitcoin exchanges. Kraken being one.
davotoula··on Western Union admits to aiding wire fraud, to pay $586M
Their unique selling point is in fact very good conversion rates between currencies.

However they don't support ALL currencies. Sometimes the support a currency one way only.

davotoula··on Bitcoin Price Chart
It's not.

There's a lot of arguing and a main proponent of the "big blocks" camp has organised enough miners to current bitcoin scaling enhancements.

They demand bigger blocks before they allow further scaling enhancements.
