One of the many reasons to visit Pembrokeshire, Wales:

https://www.internalfire.com/

Lots of running kit you can get close to or hands on with e.g. 4000hp jet generators, telephone exchanges, steam engines etc. plus knowledgeable and passionate staff.

Well worth a couple of hours detour to check out.

davnola··on We Looked for Work as a Software Development Team
Yes, but even the best agency will every so often run into a bad client. I think that's analogous to what happened here.
davnola··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2015)
Appear Here | London, United Kingdom | ONSITE | FULLTIME

Ruby/Rails React/Redux IOS Android Redis/PostgreSQL/Elasticsearch AWS/Docker

https://www.appearhere.co.uk?hn is the UK’s leading marketplace for commercial letting. Our platform allows anyone with an idea to book everything from pop ups through to prime Oxford Street locations. It’s been called AirBnB for brands, and our vision is to make it as easy to book a shop as it is to book a hotel room. A surprisingly huge market, and it's in our hands to become the world's leading marketplace.

You’d be part of a small team that is taking Appear Here worldwide, onto new platforms, and deep into masses of valuable data. It's an energetic, committed, challenging, and sane culture. Plus we're a stone's throw from the best lunchtime options in London.

This is essentially the same approach as https://github.com/snowplow/snowplow/wiki/Setting-up-the-Clo....

What's neat and novel to me about this implementation is the use of delimiters vastly simplifies loading the raw S3 logs into Redshift.

davnola··on Ask HN: What's the best way to write an API spec?
Here's a summary of the discussion (RAML vs Swagger vs Apiary vs RSpec...) we had at Lonely Planet: https://lonelyplanet.atlassian.net/wiki/display/PUB/API+Spec...

5 months in, we're happy with API Blueprint. We used to use Dredd for API validation but ran into to some limitations:

- Dredd does not perform any validation against the siren response beyond the first key level. For example, it does not validate if the class-name is user-events, or usr-events

- Dredd does not make any difference between Action parameters and Resource parameters. Then, an action POST to create user-events will have undesired url parameters. E.G: POST /user-events?take=0&skip=2 (The apib blueprint specs allows to make this difference: https://github.com/apiaryio/api-blueprint/blob/master/exampl...)

So one of our devs created a Ruby validator, https://github.com/nogates/vigia. See http://engineering.lonelyplanet.com/2014/11/18/vigia-integra... if you're interested.

davnola··on Pkgr, make a package out of a Rails app in 5 minutes
We're trialling cutting packages from Rails apps with fpm[1], plus prm[2] to create the apt repository on s3.

There's a bit of footwork needed to include built gems and correct asset manifests in the package too, but we now have 10-20s deploys, down from 8-12 mins. Plus it has less impact on server resources.

Last month Jobbik rallied against the World Jewish Congress in Budapest, protesting "against what it said was a Jewish attempt to buy up Hungary".

They frame themselves as fascist and anti-semite.

davnola··on "DCI" in Ruby is completely broken
Because in general, delegation tends to lead to object schizophrenia. Specifically, SimpleDelegator will leak the original delegatee object when a delegated method returns `self`.

     s = "foo"

     d = SimpleDelegator.new s

     s2 = d << "bar"

     s2.object_id == s # true
I think SimpleDelegator is really neat but totally dangerous. Doesn't this ring alarm bells with you?

  # delegate.rb L117
  #
  # Returns true if two objects are considered of equal value.
  #
  def ==(obj)
    return true if obj.equal?(self)
    self.__getobj__ == obj
  end

davnola··on John Peel’s Record Collection to be Made Public
Cheers! Really enjoyed making it!

I compiled a JSON index of all the tracks from various sources. The site loads the index and calls the YouTube API to find the best match video. Simples! I manually blacklisted and whitelisted some video ids as reports of missing/broken tracks came in last year, but it's pretty robust as videos come and go.

davnola··on John Peel’s Record Collection to be Made Public
In the meantime, you can listen to every track from every John Peel Festive 50 at http://peelplayer.com

Disclaimer: it's a site I hacked together in a few hours for John Peel day last year

davnola··on 7 Years Of YouTube Scalability Lessons In 30 Minutes
I've heard it called "splay" before e.g. `chef-client` will take an interval option and a splay option. Splay is a random amount of time added to the interval to prevent thundering herds.
davnola··on The "Surprise Exam" paradox
The students' anticipations of the exam are their anticipations of the exam. I don't see the circularity yet. It's clearer in the Liar Paradox.
davnola··on The "Surprise Exam" paradox
Perhaps it can, but the challenge then is to identify what's different about the professor's statement from a statement like "It's raining". Why doesn't the first have a definite truth value, but the second does? (What the professor himself believes is not relevant to the actual truth of his statement.)

You might be interested in verificationism http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/logical-empiricism/#EmpVer... (apologies if you know about it already).

davnola··on The "Surprise Exam" paradox
The truthmaker for whether it is a surprise or not clearly depends on their own belief states. They are reasoning about what they would or would not believe in different circumstances, so they should include a premise about their belief states in their induction, otherwise their reasoning is unsound.

They reason, if there is going to be an exam, and it hasn't happened by Thursday, then it will happen Friday, and we would believe it would happen on Friday and it cannot be a surprise.

They should reason like this: if there is going to be an exam and we believe there will be an exam, and it has not happened on Thursday &c then it cannot be a surprise.

But, they stopped believing the exam was happening. Doh.
