davinic··on Coffee Is Hard
"But most days, if you’re aware enough to give yourself a choice, you can choose to look differently at this fat, dead-eyed, over-made-up lady who just screamed at her kid in the checkout line. Maybe she’s not usually like this. Maybe she’s been up three straight nights holding the hand of a husband who is dying of bone cancer. Or maybe this very lady is the low-wage clerk at the motor vehicle department, who just yesterday helped your spouse resolve a horrific, infuriating, red-tape problem through some small act of bureaucratic kindness. Of course, none of this is likely, but it’s also not impossible. It just depends what you want to consider. If you’re automatically sure that you know what reality is, and you are operating on your default setting, then you, like me, probably won’t consider possibilities that aren’t annoying and miserable. But if you really learn how to pay attention, then you will know there are other options. It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down." -- David Foster Wallace, This is Water

Nope, but we'll be seeing more of it: https://futurism.com/startrocket-giant-ads-night-sky-cubesat...
davinic··on Cambridge gallery lends art to students 'with none damaged' in 60 years
When it comes to long-term storage of art, damage can be calculated in more ways than whether a piece of art is noticeably defaced.

The biggest threat to these pieces lies in being stored outside of a climate, light, and humidity-controlled environment. When the lifespan of a thing is hundreds or thousands of years, this matters just as much.

However, if the museum doesn't normally keep its stored pieces in a controlled environment, then this should be no different.

But kudos to these organizations for trusting the students enough to do this.

davinic··on California Is in Big Trouble Again, After Averting a Collapse in the 2000s
Averages in this case are meaningless. The distribution matters more than the average.

Never cross a river that is "on average 4 feet deep".

davinic··on Baltimore Blew Off Ransomware Demand Only to Find Data Had Never Been Backed Up
True, but managers also usually fail to account for the time and cost of remediation after a pentest.

Had the city engaged in the pentest, would there have been an appetite to spend 10-20x that amount on remediation?

>>no Corp I know backs up user machines

Most of the orgs I've worked at (for at least the last decade) map the local profile to a network share, which is definitely backed up. The only things not backed up would be saved outside that folder structure, but the organizations have always been clear about that.

davinic··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
This is not true. It has been on by default since iOS 9.
davinic··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
No one has yet to provide an argument as to why "smart speakers are much better at invading privacy".

For example, just this year my always-on, always-near-me iPhone was subject to an attack where anyone could call me on FaceTime and gain access to my microphone. This attack vector does not exist on my Google Home.

So, why are smart speakers much better at invading privacy?

davinic··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
Siri is always enabled on iPhones by default.
davinic··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
Of course not, but phrasing it in this way (that phones are a separate exception) minimizes the legitimate critiques of always-listening cellphone privacy.
davinic··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
But saying "beyond what smartphones are already capable of" diminishes the fact that they are also always listening, and are also generally near where you are. Siri, by default, is always listening. Most people don't understand or know this. People are then amazed when they put their phone on a table and say "Hey Siri" from across the room.
davinic··on Reversing Safeway's private APIs to automate coupon collection
There are companies[0] that provide realtime (I think) satellite imagery apis. One use case I saw was stock traders tracking parking lots of large retailers to gain early insights into sales metrics.

davinic··on Pedestrian detection systems don’t work well, AAA finds
What is the reasoning for the vehicle not also sounding its horn while it's braking?
davinic··on Cars and the Fourth Amendment
This could easily be done without any automation, only using a FPV system similar to a drone. It's simple enough to do this with only a Comma.ai devkit and some FPV hardware.
davinic··on Making My Own Glasses
When I bought online from Zenni optical they sent a plastic ruler that you set on the bridge of your nose with a slot in the middle, and can be used to measure PD. It's similar to this: https://store.eyeque.com/eyeque-pd-ruler.html
davinic··on Introducing Threads
This is exactly why they spun it off. They've known for a while that many people are walking away from FB, so they're adding apps to retain you as a customer, and all the data collection that entails.
davinic··on Ask HN: What are weird and/or novel ways to do web UIs?
Sounds like there was no API. OP was just making POST requests directly to the server.
davinic··on Protester shot in chest by live police round during Hong Kong protests
There are several studies on this that conclude otherwise. For example[1]:

"Firearm prevalence is significantly related to total violent crime (B = .600, p < .05). With each unit increase in firearm prevalence, the expected count of the violent crime index increases by .600. This also indicates that the percent change in the total violent crime is an 82% increase for every unit increase in firearm ownership. The prevalence of guns does significantly increase the violent crime in the county. This finding is consistent with previous research on firearm prevalence and crime both in the United States and internationally."

davinic··on The Spinner
Yes, and I think they still technically do. At some point they changed it from a single target email to requiring 20, but you could get around this by uploading 19 others of a different gender, then use gender as a filter later on when creating the target list.
davinic··on Plane Tests Must Use Average Pilots, NTSB Says After 737 Max Crashes
Testing a large enough random sampling of people will include the lowest common denominator as well.
davinic··on Plane Tests Must Use Average Pilots, NTSB Says After 737 Max Crashes
Also all of the US-based MAXs had the optional AoA Sensor Disagree indicator, which would instantly show the source of the issue. The international pilots were in the dark because Boeing turned a critical safety feature into a revenue stream.
davinic··on Uber stopped its own investigators from reporting crimes to the police
My position is "never talk to police without an attorney" -(although this wouldn't apply if I were reporting a crime). Uber has plenty of attorneys either way. There is no conflict.
davinic··on How Firebase Interviewed Software Engineers
I would, because interviews require someone from the other organization to be there. Time is a valuable resource, and as long as the employer is showing their commitment, I have no problem reciprocating. Skin in the game is the key.
davinic··on How Firebase Interviewed Software Engineers
I refuse to do so. The companies have no skin in the game and could easily be giving the same assignment to hundreds of people fighting for the job.

I would entertain the idea later in the interview process, especially if there were some token payment to show that the potential employer is just as invested as I.

davinic··on Google contractors in Pittsburgh vote to unionize
I'm a corp to corp subcontractor and aside from getting nearly half of my rate taken, I keep and pay for my own liability and e&o insurance.
davinic··on Google contractors in Pittsburgh vote to unionize
I am a long-time dev contractor (not with Google), and I am sick of staffing middlemen that keep 40%+ of my hourly rate and hold the money an extra month, simply because they had access to the client's contractor system. It's robbery.
davinic··on Will America's debt doom us?
The answer can be zero. We also own the printing presses. This could act as a general tax on the economy without a tax rate hike.
davinic··on Some WeWork Board Members Seek to Remove Adam Neumann as CEO
I used VRBO often before AirBnb existed and I never experienced anyone collecting hotel taxes or attempting to be in compliance. Do you have a source for this claim?
davinic··on Birds Are Vanishing from North America
I disagree. One could change the capitalist model to account and be liable for all externalities and to tax/penalize those firms/countries who refuse to.
