david-cako··on A clean start for the web (2020)
Regular ass HTML and CSS works just as well as ever. Application frameworks solve problems that are convincing at hyper-giga Google scale (where an infinite number of participants and data models need to be consolidated) that aren't as important when I am trying to display words, pictures, and video to people across the world. For instance, if you're talking about advanced sharding, granular caches per data-field, or scaling microservices with the load on different parts of your application, then maybe you need something more complicated.

I like simple, and I like to be able to see changes I make in real time. React makes a lot of things more simple, so I use it often.

david-cako··on Overengineered Japanese Mechanical Pencils [video]
In middle school, a buddy of mine drew a beautiful picture of a Bugatti Veyron with a silver Pilot Dr. Grip Ltd. shaker pencil and I was so enamored by his drawing and his pencil. He spent weeks getting the details just right during downtime in math class.

It got me interested in stationary ever since then, and I've always loved JetPens. I've gone through phases where I really like mechanical pencils, although I mostly write with Uni Signo UM-151 0.38mm gel pens. Super smooth with a crisp, fine line.

JetPens is a great site with a very cool niche. Check out Kinokuniya too. There's one in Little Tokyo in LA. Lots of pens, pencils, notebooks, and all sorts of books and manga.

david-cako··on Ask HN: Why aren't devs making desktop apps any more?
Mobile is about discoverability and money. iOS users are more willing to pay for apps than any other platform, and every established business wants an app so they can be on more devices.

david-cako··on I dread writing embedded GUIs
We've done real-time JavaScript UIs for several projects where the hardware is slick enough to host a REST API or a WebSockets server. It's worked well, making it easy to access devices from a kiosk browser or remotely. It also enables communication between devices across the same API layer, and by decoupling the UI from the application and control planes, it allows us to iterate super quickly with familiar tools.

david-cako··on DuckDuckGo Email Protection
I like the trend we're seeing towards privacy and proxying, especially if DDG is really lean about logging. They say they strip out all content and headers.

The article is sweet, although one thing I noticed, putting price/discount call-to-actions in an example image like that makes it less clear that the service is free.

david-cako··on GitHub Copilot
and away we go to singularity.
david-cako··on Architecture of the Playstation
This is an awesome article! It covers a lot of ground in a way that makes sense for people that aren't game developers or system-level engineers. I love the tabbed sections and the model viewers too.

It looks like the author, Rodrigo, has done similar articles for a bunch of other consoles which is incredible.

david-cako··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
For some time now, I've been using a CSS mod for Firefox to put the window controls on the same row as the navigation buttons and address bar, and I use the Tree Tabs extension to get a vertical tab bar on the right, which I overlap with VS Code's file navigation so that the meat of both apps are in view even if they are overlapping.

At some point, an update made the window controls disappear. I still haven't fixed it, but I like my toolbar being as small as possible to give me more vertical screen real estate. I don't mind this change to Safari tbh. A big draw of Macs is also the 16:10 aspect ratio.

david-cako··on Study: A quarter of adults don’t want children – and they’re still happy
For one, it keeps a couple invested in something that isn't themselves or work. It's natural that a couple should want to strive for something together, like raising their children into adulthood, and having children is the primary thing that is biologically codified for this.

I thought I didn't want kids, then I realized I don't find work especially gratifying, and I heard lots of really interesting things from people who do have kids about how important and meaningful having them is to them; I'll find out soon enough. In hindsight, I was disturbed by how having kids worked out for many people around me, and I was afraid that I would make the same mistakes. I know that this doesn't have to be the case.

Maybe some people feel the same way about work, and maybe some couples work together. Maybe striving towards financial goals or living situations does the trick for other couples.

david-cako··on Show HN: Redact – Automated deletion for your content on social networks
This is an awesome tool that addresses a real need for many privacy conscious folks!
david-cako··on Let’s Talk About Hot Tub Streams
Nice, it's good that they're bringing clarity since there's so much of this sort of content now. Hopefully Twitch becomes more consistent and transparent with how they enforce content policies moving forward. There's very unclear feedback or warnings provided to streamers, and there seems to be quite a bit of nepotism. All sorts of streamers from all different communities can corroborate this.
david-cako··on Bitcoin is 'a giant pyramid scheme,' says Pinboard founder [video]
With a sufficiently broad definition of "pyramid scheme", everything is a pyramid scheme.

Power, ideology, or capital naturally organizes with some sort of gradient, and as more participants that enter into a system, it bolsters the authority of the system itself.

If you don't like power, ideology, or capital, pursue love and peace. Or my advice is to try all of the above.

david-cako··on Target stops selling Pokémon cards in store, citing safety concerns
Sort of, but it's unfair when you're buying booster packs online from folks that might be selling you pre-weighed packs from booster boxes. For this reason, you're really best off only buying booster boxes or individual cards online unless you really trust the seller.
