dave4420··on Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla
We take drug addicts to rehab. We don’t just give them money so they don’t need to steal to get high. But we can’t take them to rehab until they admit to themselves that they have a problem.
dave4420··on Trimodal Nature of Tech Compensation in the US, UK and India
The article does say that “The data is likely to overrepresent US-HQ’d companies”.
dave4420··on Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla
Why save the American people from their bad decision?
dave4420··on British nuclear weapons can protect Canada against Trump, says Chrystia Freeland
Yes, but it’s difficult because (as I understand it) the French refresh cycle is out of sync with the US/UK refresh cycle.

And even if the UK decided it was ok with spending extra money early, or going without nukes for a transitional period, the French option would be more expensive (not the same economies of scale).

Plus, the UK still wouldn’t have the expertise to maintain the things, so now it would be vulnerable to the French reneging instead.

dave4420··on British nuclear weapons can protect Canada against Trump, says Chrystia Freeland
Someone should tell her that the US could shut down the UK’s nukes within two years if it wanted.

(We bought them cheap and are reliant on the US for maintenance.)

dave4420··on Ask HN: Why can't we have LLMs writing documentation?
I expect the LLM would need more context to make the documentation useful for readers.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Do employees at large companies use internal forums instead of Reddit?
They use Slack or Teams.

There’ll be channels to talk about random stuff, or about fantasy football, or to post pictures of their cats, or whatever.

I’m not sure why this is even a question?

Do you have any particular topics in mind?

dave4420··on gguser – A Simple CLI to Manage Multiple Git Profiles
I have per profile ssh keys, by setting core.sshCommand differently per profile, and passing a different ssh config file in each profile.

Honestly, overriding profiles per repo sounds like a disaster waiting to happen for me. I'm pretty sure I'd check out a repo and forget to set the right identity for it at some point. But if it works better for you, it works better for you.

I'm curious: if you're not grouping repos in your filesystem according to which context they're from — which for me dictates which identity I want to use — how are you choosing which directories to store repos in? Or does the context not dictate which identity you want to use?

dave4420··on gguser – A Simple CLI to Manage Multiple Git Profiles
What’s the advantage of this over https://utf9k.net/blog/conditional-gitconfig/ ?

I use this technique to use my personal identity by default, and my work identity with repos that are checked out under ~/$WORK

I even have git aliases that behave differently depending on which identity I'm using.

dave4420··on What Would a Martian Calendar Would Look Like?
If the seasons vary that much in length, why do they have to contain the same number of months?
dave4420··on How to Make Superbabies
The term “donor embryo” sounds almost designed to wind up anti-abortion people.

Has the pendulum swung too far in favour of avoiding research for ethical reasons? Probably, yes. Do we want it to swing all the way to the opposite extreme? Hell no.

dave4420··on Economists are starting to worry about a serious Trump recession
Trump won’t be neutralised unless Congress is willing to impeach and convict him. He has been pulling stunts like sucking up to Russia and the whole doge business without permission from Congress.

The chances of there being a “convict Trump” supermajority in the Senate after the midterms is basically zero — Dems would need to win all but two of the Senate seats up, or there’d need to be GOP defections.

dave4420··on Apple's new C1 brings two killer features, and it's just the start
Not available for another couple of days though. Let’s see how it performs in practice before praising it to the heavens.
dave4420··on UK Government is making security harder for everyone
You think they’re only asking Apple?
dave4420··on UK's Hinkley Point C nuclear plant yet to attract new investors, says EDF boss
There’s an alternate reality out there where things like Hinkley Point C and the Elizabeth Line come in on time and on budget. We really need to get better at large construction projects.

In the meantime… I’d say that connecting Hinkley Point C to the grid should be easier than for renewables… but that doesn’t count for much when it takes so long to build anyway.

So my answer is that it can’t compete, and we can only really justify it as increasing security of supply.

dave4420··on [dead]
What answer would not point to bias?
dave4420··on Ask HN: What could Trump / Musk gain from inspecting Fort Knox?
They’re flooding the zone, to prevent people from getting upset about other things they’re doing.

Time you spend thinking about this is time you’re not thinking about damage they’re causing elsewhere.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Could something like an email Tobin Tax work to reduce unwanted emails?
Given that spammers send spam from servers they’ve hacked into, wouldn’t this just mean that the hacking victims would have to pay the tax?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Why do some billionaires wear suits at work?
They’re billionaires. They can easily afford comfortable suits.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Possible US Alliance with Russia?
I’m sure he’d love to be a dictator, but he isn’t. At least not yet.

I’m not sure Russia can be allied with America and China at the same time. I don’t see America and China being allies, even if they had the same political system. And I don’t see what Russia would get by dumping China for America? Meanwhile, China at this point is more reliable.

But a thaw in relations? Yeah, sure, already happening.

dave4420··on SQLite-on-the-Server Is Misunderstood: Better at Hyper-Scale Than Micro-Scale
It feels like half the benefits of sqlite-per-partition listed are also benefits of sharded Postgres/mysql/etc, and the other half are non-obvious and could do with being justified rather than just asserted.

Maybe explained in another post?

dave4420··on Elon Musk is failing to cut American spending
I don’t know what Republicans are these days, but they aren’t economic conservatives. That they think the Laffer curve kicks in at the level taxes are today is one of the giveaways.
dave4420··on Supersonic flight is possible without an audible sonic boom
How does fuel usage compare to mainstream aeroplanes?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Can we read a message without sending a "read" notification?
In what context?

I’ve never seen any read notifications on HN.

dave4420··on Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines? How to thrive in a ChatGPT world
The uncanny valley of competence.
dave4420··on A case against syntax highlighting (2007)
I like rainbow brackets as well.

But yes, I’d like to see some semantic highlighting.

Variable declarations in bold.

Mutating function calls / operators in a different colour.

Colour variables according to their type or scope.

Can that function call throw? It should look different.

dave4420··on Ask HN: What will knowledge workers do when most knowledge work is done with AI?
And inadequate assistance from government.
dave4420··on Ask HN: What will knowledge workers do when most knowledge work is done with AI?
The same thing that happened to industrial workers as the areas they lived in deindustrialised.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Can AI make American football comprehensible to non-Americans?
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

There are various other sports people in the rest of the world enjoy watching, without feeling that they’re missing out by not getting American football.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Do CS degrees avoid game design so CS majors don't lose interest in CS?
If CS courses are supposed to teach students how to do Software Engineering, maybe they should be renamed to be SE courses.
