I'm Daryn Nakhuda. I've started and worked at several startups and spent a couple years at Amazon. I've written a lot of code in my life, but figuring out the right product that makes users happy is what I enjoy the most.

My blog is here: http://blog.daryn.net.

Love this! Menu design has really lost a lot of it's art, especially with online ordering.
daryn··on Jet.com Overhauls Business Model, Kills $50 Membership Fee to Broaden Appeal
Honestly, it's just so easy to shop at Amazon with Prime, I'm not sure anything will convince me to use Jet instead.
daryn··on Danielle Morrill is mostly right about VC deal sourcing; here’s how she’s wrong
Nice to see Randall Lucas back in business.
daryn··on Balanced payments is shutting down
wow, this is a real bummer. Good luck guys.

p.s. Classy move on the migration plan.

daryn··on LOLwork - reality show based on Seattle's ICanHasCheezburger.com
I love the cheezburger guys, and think they do good work, but wow that was terrible. I need band-aids for my eyes.
daryn··on How I Learned to Love the DMCA
now there's a headline I never thought I'd see on a startup blog! :)
daryn··on From BigCo Software Engineer to Entrepreneur - 1 year in.
Love this blog post by Evan Jacobs reflecting on his first year as a entrepreneur and what he's learned.
daryn··on A Better Way To Travel
great suggestion Hugh. We definitely want to incorporate the time of day and time between stops at some point, both for the reason you suggested as well as to be smarter about the types of attractions we suggest at different times. thanks!
daryn··on Saving a Life is Easy, But I Didn't
If any of you are in Seattle, and want to become registered marrow donors and potentially help save a life, there is a swabbing party tonight at the Rob Roy in Belltown.

daryn··on Twilio Announces 1st Developer Conference
This is going to be awesome. I can't think of a more developer-friendly platform than Twilio!
daryn··on Meet Amazon.com’s first employee: Shel Kaphan
This was a fascinating interview! very cool.
daryn··on What does the business person do in a startup?
It's easy for us to discount all the non-technical stuff that needs to be done - but without it we might as well be playing with ourselves in our closets.
daryn··on Disqussing Disqus
Fair point about unverifiable numbers, but in Disqus' case I don't think it is running scared - just celebrating the traction that they've achieved and announcing that they just raised a big round.

That said, I'm a huge Disqus fan, and hate FB comments, so I may be biased :)

daryn··on Untitled Startup has a title: Simply Measured
Site looks great, congratulations on the the name!

daryn··on Building a Scrabble MMO in 48 hours
This is so awesome.
daryn··on How to use Amazon’s S3 web service for Scaling Image Hosting
Like jrnkntl said, we cache all resized copies.

The reason we resize and apply effects at request time instead of at upload time is that our design needs may change over time, and this way we don't need to go back and batch reprocess things.

daryn··on What Startups Must Know Before Signing a Lease
There are also coffee shops and 101 other ways to work without a physical nexus.

I think at some point, however, when you're growing, having everyone in one location that is "home" can be very useful, and these tips are good for if you get to that point.

daryn··on The Programmer Dress Code
I'm wearing a yellow polo and pink plaid linen shorts today.
daryn··on Bitching About Basecamp
like daveschappell says below, the problem (or one problem) is that their products don't match their marketing. Maybe Basecamp is really good for a specific niche, and maybe everyone knows that, but that's not how 37s positions it on their website.
daryn··on Bitching About Basecamp
For as much as we all love 37s and their preaching, Scott brings up some very valid points about their actual products outside of their books and brand.
daryn··on How To Transition From A Free To A Paid Service
I work at TeachStreet, and this has been a really dramatic change for us. By thinking through the transition and being as transparent as possible with our users throughout the process, it has worked out as least as well as any of us could have hoped.

daryn··on Should Startups Worry about Their Company Culture?
Obviously you need to worry about revenue and profitability, but a strong culture can help get everyone on-board to be excited and work hard to get there.
daryn··on What companies that are making at least $1 million a year didn’t take funding?
and of course there are many non-funded, non-tech, startups that make that much after 2-3 years too.
daryn··on What is Marketing?
They're related, so until you have different people to fill each role, yes, they're the same thing.

(The marketing person will own advertising, and the SE will own web-dev)

daryn··on Unexpected Startup Lesson #1: Quitting the day job
Good point, I've just seen a lot of 'screw business school, spend your money on a startup instead' type posts recently, which certainly wasn't the case in this post.
daryn··on Unexpected Startup Lesson #1: Quitting the day job
I think the MBA gets an overly bad rap these days, but looking forward to reading the next installment.
