darklycan51··on Minimum Wage Clock
I guarantee you you put a $15/hr person in that site and you barely notice a difference compared to a billionaire.
darklycan51··on Minimum Wage Clock
Why is it appalling? if you want to promote people having kids then this is one of the ways to do it. a kid can live sharing rent or with his parents, an adult cannot.
darklycan51··on Making the web fun again (2013)
"Go to a Facebook profile, and ponder what we have now. Instead of having adventures into the great unknowns of the web, we instead now spend most of our time on social networks: boring, suburban gated communities, where everybody’s “profile” looks exactly the same, and presents exactly the same content, in the same arrangement. Rarely do we create things on these networks; Instead, we consume, and report on our consumption. The uniformity and blandness rival something out of a Soviet bloc residential apartments corridor. And now adding to that analogy, we’ve found out that our government is actually spying on us while we’re doing it, in ways the Stasi could only dream of. The web we have today is a sad, pathetic, consumption-oriented digital iron curtain, and we need to change that."

Exactly what I felt when Youtube removed the ability to customize your channel in 2011, deleted my by then fairly large channel in protest (3000 subs in 2011 was alright sized)

darklycan51··on Possible Meissner effect near room temperature: copper-substituted lead apatite
He really has become my source to go for most science papers lol, then after that its PBS guy and sometimes Sabine although I don't usually go to her stuff for 100% accuracy or them trying to at least
darklycan51··on Will we be addicted to our phones forever? An optimistic outlook
I don't really use my phone as a software developer, mostly because I have my pc with me all the time and pretty much all software is better on pc than on phones (thanks Apple/Google).

I don't really know what people are doing to be addicted to their phones? maybe you're just addicted to social media? find other hobbies...

darklycan51··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
Chrome became defacto because of techies and now techies are actively destroying the web by no longer swapping people to firefox, I guess it doesn't matter anymore, activism in general is dead, people just sit and let us all enter into a dystopia willingly.

Cannot wait until unskippable ads even with "Premium" are a thing, just like cable, and our community will have been complicit in enabling it

darklycan51··on Posts, profiles, and user search are now available without login
Brosky sold twitter and before he sold it it went from the best to the worst social media, why on earth would I go back there? Elon might be cringe but Twitter is legitimately less neurotic nowadays than it was before he sold it.
darklycan51··on Plan to End E-Vehicle Subsidies Sparks Anger in Germany
Germany is legit the one country in the western hemisphere doing the most damage to the future, and I am surprised how nobody calls them out on it.

1)Turning off nuclear and cancelling plans for new plants because literally their party, the "green party" originated as an anti nuclear party, so of course they don't care and just do it for political reasons.

2)E-Vehicles from US and China threatening Germany's old guard that refuses to adapt? who cares about the environment then.

Remember them falsifying reports and getting away with a slap in the wrist?

darklycan51··on Australia to ban engineered stone
"the free market would have eventually pushed engineered stone out"

Lol.

darklycan51··on Firefox slow to load YouTube? Just another front in Google's war on ad blockers
Which is why I go out of my wave to use sponsorblock and anti thumbnail addons.

I'm not watching your embedded ad noty, there's a reason why LTT shadowbans anyone who mentions it

darklycan51··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
Phones are a literal hellhole to utilize compared to desktop, which is why I very literally do not buy any smartphone other than the low end 2017 one I still own. Even "sideloading" is fairly trash on itself, just let me pick any appstore whatsoever and install out of the box, no need to "sideload".
darklycan51··on You Should Be Concerned About the Bill to Remove Section 230 Protections from AI
Section 230 should not apply to AI, don't care what any "techbro" thinks, it was not meant for AI and if there should be any protection for AI it should be drafted explicitly for it.
darklycan51··on E3 Is Officially Permanently Over
Last E3 was just horrible so in my opinion I'm glad it's gone, rather than overstay its welcome.
darklycan51··on Gemini AI
Ultra is just vaporware, typical from google
darklycan51··on AI and Mass Spying
Think about it this way.

Every service has access to the IPs you've used to log on, most services require an email, phone number some debit/credit cards and or similar personal info. Link that with government databases on addresses/real names/ISP customers and you basically can get most peoples accounts, on virtually any service they use.

We then also have things such as the patriot act in effect, the government could if they wanted run a system to do this automatically, where every message is scanned by an AI that catalogues them.

I have believed for some time now that we are extremely close to a complete dystopia.

darklycan51··on Billionaires amass more through inheritance than wealth creation, says UBS
There really should not be any reason at all for billionaires to exist, if you can find one then that alone means your government is not good enough and needs improvement, NOT that billionaires need to exist.
darklycan51··on Artificial glacier growing in the desert (2017)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakhch%C4%81l

I'll leave this here...

darklycan51··on Training for one trillion parameter model backed by Intel and US govt has begun
Ah yeah, this sounds like such a great thing, state of the art unreleased tech + 1 trillion parameters based by data accessed by the patriot act.

Such a wholesome thing. I don't want to hear 2 years from now how China is evil for using "AI" when the government is attempting to weaponize AI, of course other governments will start doing it as well.

darklycan51··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
This comment reads like an OpenAI employee typed this...
darklycan51··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
Maybe trying to backdoor sell your company to Microsoft even though its owned by a non profit might be it? you know, Microsoft showed its true face today.

This is even worse than Google's destruction of Firefox

darklycan51··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
I knew something like this would happen, MS was told they would originally only be given stuff until their investment was paid off, but MS could care less about their investment, they want to own OpenAI, so it makes sense they would coup the company
darklycan51··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
It always seemed like Microsoft was behind this, biggest tell was how comfortable MS was at having their entire AI future depend on a company where they don't really have full rights to.
darklycan51··on YouTube slows down video load times when using Firefox
They did this for years in the past, I really despise google
darklycan51··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
It's just vultures eating each other, Altman himself was a vulture (what he did with a supposedly non profit).

But in dog eat dog world, this is really vultures eating each other up, I suppose at this point the most ruthless will be left at the end

darklycan51··on The state of silicon and the GPU poors
Ever since the 3000 gen of Nvidia GPUs have simply gone out of being a possibility for anyone in the 3rd world, they are way too expensive.

Add in the increase in energy costs... I don't know, really.

darklycan51··on Google's advanced music generation model and two new AI experiments
Hahahaha poor naive people that accepted to "collaborate" with Google, Google has taught us how their seemingly benign acts always end up as they started, right?

Nothing more trustworthy than a multi billion corporation trying to destroy the internet as we know it to get more billions out of ads convinces a bunch of washed up artists that their new project is benign and even are so good that they use the hashtag "Social Responsibility".

This is very totally not just a plan to try to get others on board, wonder what's the catch here? try to do a FOMO where only the first few get to get rights for their voice being used? playing a very long con getting voice exclusivity rights? or what exactly?

One thing I know is that whatever Google says is a lie.

darklycan51··on U.S. reenters the nuclear fuel game
Building reactors TODAY would take way longer than we have to hit net neutrality let alone reducing anything.

China built as much solar as the US has entirely last year alone, it can be done

darklycan51··on Is this radical redesign of GIMP possible now?
I think that just shows how terribly non programmer friendly open source development is, designers and the like do not touch places like github, the whole model needs a redo to make it easier for non programmers to participate in open source development
darklycan51··on Is this radical redesign of GIMP possible now?
It's better than what currently there is but why does open source software have to have such bad UI? what are those lock and checkboxes? a 5 year old could come up with better icons...

What's up with the thick lines around UI elements? it all looks so 2008.

It sometimes looks to me like absolutely 0 designers are actually involved in open source, at all

darklycan51··on Microsoft lays hands on login data: Beware of the new Outlook
I really love how they made a slick and fast mail app for windows, even if it it didn't support everything. but it did its job of being a fast email client.

Then they decided not anymore and replaced it with a bloated one...
