dannykwells··on Collaborative filtering doesn't work for us
Release the data and let the community figure this out!

This particular analysis is rather limpid and, ummm, misses a key feature of the most common chatroulette use case.

dannykwells··on Grand jury indicts Trevor Milton, Nikola founder, on three counts of fraud
Came here to say this. So many good companies doing real work worth way less. Pure insanity.
dannykwells··on Delta pilot sues the airline for allegedly stealing an app he designed
Real twist ending with this comment. Five stars would chortle at again.
dannykwells··on [dead]
Editorialized title not stated by this report. Egregious and deeply misleading. Please remove.
dannykwells··on Shell ordered to cut CO2 emissions by 45% in landmark climate case
"Ruling will only hold in the Netherlands". I can see Shell just exiting the Netherlands rather than lowering emissions by 45% globally. Another weak, symbolic ruling from a European court.
dannykwells··on Researchhub: GitHub for Science
aRxiv / bioaRxiv / medaRxiv exist, are free and are backed by extremely well known names and institutions in the scientific community. They do not require some random coin, you can just, well, upload a preprint of your work.

They also did the hard work on making sure journals will accept papers uploaded to there.

Maybe they don't have a flashy website but I would much much rather use those than upload my work - which I have invested years of my time + thousands or millions of dollars in - to some random site with founders who are just "from San Francisco".

For those trying to "accelerate science" - please try to take even a modicum of time to understand how science is even being done currently and start from there, instead of making up solutions to problems that don't exist.

dannykwells··on Reflow, a language for distributed, incremental data processing in the cloud
If you're into workflow runners, Reflow and Cromwell (https://github.com/broadinstitute/cromwell) are the only two really to consider. Having tried them all, these two are by far the best and most supported (and there are 100s!)

Cromwell is great because it is google cloud native and supported within the Terra ecosystem (https://app.terra.bio/) meaning you do not need to host it yourself - you can just connect your google account and go.

Reflow, I've heard, is a little more "professional" given that the Grail team is heavily ex-Google. But both can scale to massively parallel (1000+ parallel analyses).

dannykwells··on Make a document look like it was written by a Cthulhu-worshipping madman? (2011)
Best subcomment on a stack exchange in a while:

"Googling "crazy latex" did not return what I expected."

dannykwells··on Cheerleader’s Snapchat rant leads to ‘momentous’ Supreme Court case on speech
I bet it's not even close.

The Roberts court loves free speech even in far more harmful forms - see Citizens United. They will be very wary of implications of "liberal" companies governing speech outside of work too.

This was a huge over reach by the school and now they're gonna lose big time.

dannykwells··on Talented People Frequently Don’t Rise to the Top
"Again, I don’t really have any insightful takeaways here. I’ve just been noticing myself slowly realizing that the best don’t always rise to the top, and these are the examples that have been sticking out to me."

The lack of insight is key here, because really this isn't a hard problem at the surface. You need a compelling story, or product, that resonates with people. The more people it resonates with, the larger your audience.

Also, it never occurred to the author that DHH or Massimo don't *want" a big audience. They might want to explain their work to true fans and die hards, and not have to make it broadly accessible to the point where it could get 1M+ views. It's not about talent. It could be a choice.

dannykwells··on Accused murderer wins right to check source code of DNA testing kit
"170,000 lines of MATLAB code" (used as software to determine if humans are spending their lives in jail).

Well if that's not a line to make you feel awful on a Monday morning.

dannykwells··on Chamath Palihapitiya-backed Clover Health gets notice of SEC investigation
Link to the report: https://hindenburgresearch.com/clover/

Love em or hate em, you can't argue this thing is comprehensive and compelling. In this case it's esp. compelling because they don't have a stake.

dannykwells··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
Microsoft, Google, Amazon... Wondering who the next major CEO will be to "promote" himself to the board will be. Mark? Elon?
dannykwells··on Sci-Founder Fellowship: Helping scientists to start companies
As someone who leads a life science tech company and has participated in all fund raising rounds since our pre-seed, let me say: the market right now for life science/tech cos is so hot, a 2.5M pre-money valuation for your idea is likely low.

Also, in science there are federal grants, such as SBIR, which can be for even more (1M), are non-dilutive, and are very gettable.

So this would really be a fall back if you couldn't raise a better round nor get an SBIR...and if those are both the case, it might not be much of a company.

dannykwells··on Anthony Levandowski Pardoned
I guess we shall see.
dannykwells··on Putin's Billion Dollar Palace
I dunno, at the end Putin's spokesperson said that Putin doesn't own any palaces so this seems like fake news to me /s (But actually - this thing is like a Versailles for the modern era. Unreal.)
dannykwells··on Ask HN: Best way to learn computational biology/immunology?
The vignettes for Seurat are the place to start.

Also, I'm a founder at Immunai and this is literally what we do. Please dm if you have further questions. Happy to help however I can.

dannykwells··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
This is a very important comment, not sure why it's not higher. This isn't really a union in the traditional sense - it's just a group of hyper liberal Google activist employees who are banding together to try to get institutional change.
dannykwells··on Thai baby elephant hit by motorcycle survives after receiving CPR
Yeah one of the more intense but also kind of nonchalant posts I've seen in a long time.
dannykwells··on Tillis Releases Text of Bipartisan Legislation to Fight Illegal Streaming
Can we please stop posting proposed legislation with highly editorialized titles? Most proposed legislation, even "bipartisan" will not go through are end up so diluted that it won't matter.

Not that it's not worth fighting but this is clearly an attempt to garner clicks/votes and we should be fighting back here.

dannykwells··on More Than 70 West Point Cadets Accused of Cheating in Academic Scandal
People saying they should be expelled: 1. They are mostly first years (this was a Calculus 1 course). 2. They will go through rehabilitation 3. West Point instituted second chances in 2015, not just for this group. 4. Together implying that they will have plenty of time to prove that this was a one time thing, or not.

Compassion and vulnerability are also important parts of leadership: leaders that can admit they made a mistake, perhaps even acted selfishly, and reflect on that behavior and avoid it in the future are better than those who cannot. This is the "new" way of leadership now, and personally, I am all for it, compared to the "old" style of pure hierarchy, repressed emotion, violence + fear as motivators, etc.

dannykwells··on Zoomquilt (2004)
I love this game! Great rec.
dannykwells··on The dubiousness of digitized signature services
Does anyone know id the docusign has more complex authentication behind the scenes? Like, if someone else has access to your email, how can you verify that they aren't "forging" your digital signature on docs? Maybe like, 2 factor auth would be enough for most cases.
dannykwells··on The dubiousness of digitized signature services
Did it. Sat outside m, 6 ft apart w masks. Not too hard. Worked fine. But you're right, notarization is the way we do this for real transactions, at least in the p2p world.
dannykwells··on I should have loved biology
If you want to study biology, study evolution. Darwin. Dawkins. Gould. King. Biology only makes sense in light of evolution, and boy howdy is it beautiful.
dannykwells··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
A Fisher test you mean. T is for continuous variables.
dannykwells··on How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around
Apple stock has 10x'd under Cook since 2011. Microsoft was flat under Ballmer.

So ummm, maybe a slight difference in performance.

dannykwells··on Media Owned by Wealthy Are Quick to Tell You Wealth Taxes Are a Bad Idea
Can someone tell me - what's to stop me fro taking my assets and buying land/assets in a foreign country? Will the US claim jurisdiction over all countries? How will they audit this?

BI sucks but even they said as much for why Europe has scrapped most of their wealth taxes:

https://www.businessinsider.com/4-european-countries-wealth-...

The US is a country with a terribly funded IRS. They can barely audit those who obviously don't pay their taxes. If you are someone with 10 or 100M of assets it's easy and obvious to hide them in assets that can't be tracked.

dannykwells··on Media Owned by Wealthy Are Quick to Tell You Wealth Taxes Are a Bad Idea
You stopped reading...and missed the whole point. The idea was, to say if a tax doesn't apply to someone you still need to do a deep valuation of their assets. Someone could hide 10M in a painting and live in a regular house, have regular "income".
dannykwells··on College Enrollment Slid This Fall, with First-Year Populations Down 16%
'overpriced, elitest community colleges and tech schools siting in their Ivory Tower' seems like sarcasm but the rest of the post doesn't. Can I get a /s in this house?
