dannykwells··on Hyperparasite
This is what I come here for. Thank you.
dannykwells··on U.S. News pulls Columbia University from its 2022 rankings
Northwestern also - by the way. The president's goal when he joined was to break into the top 10.
dannykwells··on Gene Therapy Reverses Biological Aging by Six Years
Notable that last author is George Church, famed Harvard genomicist turned biohacker. While he may not be the subject of this paper, the smart money is that he's doing this too.
dannykwells··on Obama argues unregulated social media is a threat to democracy
Because our democracy wasn't stable for 250+ years before social media was invented??

Social media is not the same as a free press, freedom of speech, etc. Equating the two is quite dangerous, imo.

dannykwells··on Ask HN: Are there any rural tech communities?
Go Northfield!!! A wonderful little town with great school(s)!
dannykwells··on Netflix Officially Adding Commercials
Cancelled today and not looking back! Will focus on platforms with fewer, highly curated shows (and no ads).

Also - interesting to see Netflix not grasping how low quality their brand is becoming. Or grasping, and going all in nonetheless...

dannykwells··on Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in 10+ years
This is so true. We have Disney+, HBO, Apple, Netflix, and Hulu.

Of those, the very clear ordering in terms of taste and vision is: Disney+, Apple, HBO >>>> HBO, Hulu.

Apple is the most amazing one to me - they came from nowhere, and are bringing original content like CODA or Severance after only a few years.

Maybe it's because Apple - the largest (tech) company on Earth still has at its core the idea of beautiful things designed by humans, and Netflix never has.

dannykwells··on We’ve got a science opportunity overload: Launching the Wolfram Institute
Ideas being subjected to peer review \approx the institutionalized "Peer Review Process(TM)"
dannykwells··on We’ve got a science opportunity overload: Launching the Wolfram Institute
I came across this today:

https://www.stephenwolfram.com/publications/academic/all/

"Note: Since 1987, Stephen Wolfram’s intellectual efforts have not primarily been reported in academic articles."

To be clear - no serious scientist believes that a scholarly output which is composed predominantly of non-peer reviewed publications is a serious or valid output.

Essentially, Wolfram is a glorified blogger who runs a tech company. That's not nothing, but it doesn't make someone a scientific leader.

dannykwells··on Ask HN: Software with biggest potential for positive impact in 5 years?
The mistake he made was selling directly to doctors, instead of to pharma, insurers or medical systems (Kaiser). Most individual doctors are not necessarily prioritized to provide better care; the other entities are.
dannykwells··on What are the most important statistical ideas of the past 50 years?
These are the standard tests in most of biology at this time. Not underused at all. Very powerful and lovely to not have to assume normality.
dannykwells··on How to commit murder inside a locked room
Ummm, I think it's probably spoiled from context and connection alone, right?
dannykwells··on How SoftBank’s costly bet on the ‘internet of things’ backfired at Arm
Can anyone tell me an example where Softbank has been spectacularly correct in the past few years?

We all know the failures - are there any major success in their portfolio? Or is it all meh?

dannykwells··on The data are clear: The boys are not all right
This is 100% true and is at the core of many issues in our world. But not something you hear discussed by current political leaders. Obama got it, not sure any leader since has.
dannykwells··on Ask HN: How to raise funds for rare disease research?
Are you involved with idefine? It seems like the most natural course. Why create a separate entity and voice instead of partnering / volunteering for one that is already establishing?

I imagine if you reach out and want to find ways to help / volunteer they would be excited to hear from you and to find a way to work together (most non-profits like this are...)

dannykwells··on I write about America’s health care system, and I got caught up in it
Ironic that he works at Kaiser, I wonder if he has Kaiser Permanente insurance?
dannykwells··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
Startup life: "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

Stripe joins the ranks of Facebook, Google, and Amazon as reaching the villain stage ;)

dannykwells··on Alphabet's Calico has begun trials on a molecule for neurodegenerative diseases
This is false. Calico is the exception, not the rule, and even they receive money from big pharma. For the most part, we have new drugs because we have older drugs that generate revenue (from Medicare / taxpayers).
dannykwells··on A $3B bet on finding the fountain of youth
They can be gambles when they raise billions. Welcome to biotech investing, where even 20 year old public companies with 5B+ market caps can have very little to show for it!
dannykwells··on Google’s $1.5B research center to “solve death” (2019)
A click bait title for Calico, which, yes, is researching aging, but also has built a serious pipeline of therapies for a range of diseases, including major deals with AbbVie and others.

dannykwells··on Netflix’s Prices Are Rising Faster Than Cable
For a company with a "Culture of Reinvention", Netflix has failed to compete on the only thing that matters for a content provider...content. Apple, Disney and HBO all have better - and more curated - content. What use is there in having a slick app if all it does is deliver garbage?

Things like Squid Games are manufactured hits and not the kind of content one wants on the reg.

dannykwells··on Zillow, Prophet, time series, and prices
I like this point, since it does resonate with what much of the anecdotal evidence was, i.e., Zillow offering too much for houses around the country. The high offers would be the ones accepted (and memorable), meaning Zillow would tend to over pay for houses (leading to the rut they are in).
dannykwells··on 3½ years on my custom emperor mattress – a retrospective
Just have to say, this comment lead to one of the more unique, yet also on brand, HN threads Ive seen. Bravo.
dannykwells··on California Condors Are Capable of Asexual Reproduction
This is called parthenogensis, and is not unheard of for many animals in captivity. Sharks, in particular. A fascinating part of animal biology, to be sure.
dannykwells··on Facebook is researching AI systems that see, hear, remember everything you do
This comment needs a serious disclaimer that you are a VP of AI at Facebook. Its implied in the above, but such serious COI requires acknowledgement.
dannykwells··on Harvard’s Endowment Soars to $53.2B, Reports 33.6% Returns
Harvard should do the right thing, and begin declining donations, or better yet, have a small list of "Harvard approved" deserving schools to give the money to instead. There is no way this school needs to continue reeling in 100M-500M size donations.
dannykwells··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
This is called the Banality of Evil. Look up Hannah Arendt. It is a well established idea.
dannykwells··on Google to Buy New York City Office Building for $2.1B
LOL'd at this thanks.
dannykwells··on Ginkgo Bioworks (YC S14) is going public today
Wow - YC has been around for 15 years and only 7 IPOs. That is an interesting track record.
dannykwells··on Court rules California's Prop. 22 on Uber, Lyft drivers unconstitutional
