daniellarusso··on Voice clone of Anthony Bourdain prompts synthetic media ethics questions
If car salespeople do it, it should be fine. Is that the bar?

Parent was not pretending to be said dead person, though.

We all know a ‘Lennie’ from ‘Of Mice and Men’.
daniellarusso··on Bank of England to crack down on 'secretive' cloud computing services
That is what I thought the article was about, too.
daniellarusso··on Give me /events, not webhooks
The very first startup I worked at used this for a sweepstakes leadgen form to send to MySQL via a Perl script running from cron.

The other cool thing, to me, is you can keep adding cameras and do not have to replace hardware, just add more.
daniellarusso··on Kerberos: Open-Source Video Surveillance
How does Fat Albert eat up hardware resources?

Also, don’t you need to know the specs of the individual container instances before determining it will be resource starved on the host?

I have an off-the-shelf CCTV DVR that supports 4k with up to 8 cameras, but it struggles with more than 4.

Well done.
daniellarusso··on 'Superager' brains resist the march of time to have memories like 25-year-olds
I kind of think that is your subconscious not needing to put a bunch of effort into ‘storing’ recent meals versus prioritizing ‘memorizing’ tools you have used and how to use them.

I have vivid memories from preschool, but, ask me what happened last week, and I will need to check my bash history. j/k

Is this DIA service or an ISP?
daniellarusso··on TimeTrack Raspberry Pi
I finally looked at the article and that is bit over-engineered in my opinion.

My favorite timeclock had a two-row character lcd character display, membrane keypad for digits and maybe 5 additional function buttons: clock in, clock out, lunch in, lunch out, and admin-mode.

We used the last 6 digits of our SS# to clock in and out with.

It had a serial interface.

Use an Arduino, and you can add the serial display, keypad if needed, serial rfid or barcode scanner, and ethernet or wifi.

daniellarusso··on TimeTrack Raspberry Pi
So, most barcode scanners operate in ‘wedge’ mode.

This may be true for RFID scanners, as well.

They emulate a keyboard and some have pass-through ports, for PS/2 keyboard interfaces.

For more ‘custom’ solutions, some also have serial interfaces, so they can be programmatically controlled to scan and read based on the logic you implement.

daniellarusso··on How to build a small town in Texas
I really don’t think college towns are sustainable.

They rely on federal loans, indirectly.

Is there a node/react/js equivalent of this article?
daniellarusso··on Git vs. Fossil: what you should have done vs. what you did
I admit I have not looked at the kernel repo in quite awhile.

Is rebase used with gitflow in that context?

daniellarusso··on Git vs. Fossil: what you should have done vs. what you did
One of the repos I interact with, the team rebases all their local branch commits to master.

It is very difficult to read the commit history and get a sense of anything except Jira issue codes.

One needs to look at the individual files and read the code to understand what the commit was for.

Also, once the initial shift occurred, could that have caused enough plumbing to break to begin flooding and further cause solid ground to liquify?
daniellarusso··on US companies hit by 'colossal' cyber-attack
The craziest part to me was their pushing of the vPro integrations.
daniellarusso··on US companies hit by 'colossal' cyber-attack
I used to work for an MSP and we had used Kaseya.

There was an AV integration, and then Kaseya changed to Kaspersky. I don’t remember what the prior AV software was.

I always thought it bizarre we were actively installing AV software from Russia on banking and medical office PCs.

daniellarusso··on Google reports soaring attrition among Black women
I always thought it was because of The Simpsons, but going as far back as the Tracy Ullman show, so that could have been an influence as far back as 1987.
daniellarusso··on Google reports soaring attrition among Black women
This is almost as thoughtful as Slack enumerating all user skin tones via 5 integer values.
daniellarusso··on Check If Email Exists
We have been auditing legacy user accounts to begin a mapping to Zendesk, and Zendesk allows mapping to ‘organizations’ via email domain.

For some of these legacy accounts, the registered email addresses may have typos.

So, even a basic DNS check against the existence of the domain’s MX record is helpful.

Any of the ‘suspect’ email addresses can then be further evaluated by a human, and then removed or fixed.

daniellarusso··on The short tale of an online scam
That is pretty decent for an affiliate scam.
daniellarusso··on The most precious resource is agency
I had a similar experience, with my university and AP classes.

University would not accept the AP classes, and basically two years of college to learn what I had already been taught in high-school.

daniellarusso··on Stress does turn hair gray, and it’s reversible
Quieting the mind is really cool, but not easy. ;)
daniellarusso··on Stress does turn hair gray, and it’s reversible
Many years ago I was attending SonicWALL training, having worked for an MSP.

My classmate, who was maybe a few years younger, was a lead/owner for his MSP.

Completely gray hair and beard.

He just looked so stressed, like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

I also think many people don’t realize, particularly with Tinder, one’s sexual preference (as in an app setting/config) is only used for matching, not preventing your profile from appearing for members whose sexual orientation are not in alignment, it will just never match.

So, one could be matching or rejecting more than realized.

daniellarusso··on Americans Are Keeping Their Cars Longer, as Vehicle Age Hits 12 Years
This is a bit of an ignorant statement.

I have an older 2005 Honda Element and the double-DIN OEM CD player no longer works. Both rotary encoders for volume and tuning malfunction, and it will eject any CD placed inside it.

So, I have been looking at these on Amazon as a replacement:

https://www.amazon.com/Double-Stereo-CarPlay-ABSOSO-Receiver...

I will probably pay more for a better quality version, but it literally is a double-DIN touchscreen with Carplay support and a backup camera for $118.

There is no shortage of various head-units with backup cameras for cars that did not come factory equipped, and quite affordble.
