daniel_reetz··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
Hmm. The experiences that changed and benefited me most were least predictable. As a result, I try to manage experiences less, and choose the unknown more.

But in the spirit of what you've said, I try to avoid doing dumb, damaging, or boring things twice.

daniel_reetz··on Descent: A classic 3-D first-person shooter (2012)
The redbook audio on the CDROM introduced me to so much great music! Type O Negative!
daniel_reetz··on Llm.c – LLM training in simple, pure C/CUDA
Echoes of DeCSS ;)
daniel_reetz··on End of an era: Final Delta IV heavy rocket carries NROL-70 on historic mission
Look up Trevor Paglen's book "I could tell you but then you would have to be destroyed by me". It's a collection of mission patches along with some interpretation as to the meaning and placement of symbols. Fascinating stuff.
daniel_reetz··on Debloat non-rooted Android devices
I was furious when I found out that the default keyboard was infested with Grammarly, sending all my keystrokes without consent. Embarrassing for a $1200 flagship device.
daniel_reetz··on Source Code for Area 51 (2005) by Midway Studios Austin Found at Garage Sale
Something I've seen personally is that family calls a cleaner/buyer in to sweep the home of a deceased relative and all is lost. In short, there is no rummage sale.
daniel_reetz··on Plastic Found Inside More Than 50% of Plaques from Clogged Arteries
The specific polymers are pretty interesting.

PVC - from plumbing? It's hard to imagine other environmental sources. We're not drinking from PVC cups or eating from PVC plates. I personally would have expected to see particulates from food prep surfaces (teflon pans disintegrating during cooking) since ingestion is a likely path into the body.

Polyethylene - perhaps it's polyethylene terephthalate. Basically any soda or water bottle.

daniel_reetz··on European crash tester says carmakers must bring back physical controls
I think this is missing something fundamental. If it's too hot or cold, folks are distracted - from driving. Perhaps you are less distracted than most.

Yes, they can reassign buttons. But the core problem is distraction, which causes users to go to the touchscreen, which creates even further distraction by capturing their visual attention.

daniel_reetz··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
Can you elaborate a little on what's new? Someone close to me had a melanoma scare on almost the same time frame, and had a lot of difficulty finding doctors who would take her seriously.
daniel_reetz··on Stonelifting Etiquette
resistor color codes, but for mass
daniel_reetz··on Sora: Creating video from text
But an equally likely future is tiktok/insta generate all the videos. After all, they can afford the hardware and they understand how to be addictive.
daniel_reetz··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
I hear echoes of astrology, personally, and not good ones.
daniel_reetz··on High coffee consumption, brain volume and risk of dementia and stroke
That is interesting. I wonder if it's simply the cadmium and lead found in coffee concentrate in heavy users.
daniel_reetz··on How we had our Nectar Points stolen, and this is how yours will be too
This will come to a head when dynamic pricing becomes the norm. You'll pay more for formula and baby vitamins when you need it the most.
daniel_reetz··on Disney unveils the HoloTile floor
I'm not in a position to discuss, unfortunately. For now, I'll just say he's the real deal, and I'm proud of him and Disney Research.
daniel_reetz··on Disney unveils the HoloTile floor
I worked in that very lab, side by side with Lanny Smoot for four years straight.

The man is 100% passion and 110% invention.

daniel_reetz··on Hans Reiser on ReiserFS deprecation in the Linux kernel
Also, people may simply not remember him.

We are all the center of our own worlds.

daniel_reetz··on The incredible shrinking podcast industry?
Great example of how the invisible hand of big tech enacts large scale behavioral change.
daniel_reetz··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
Yeah, I was referring to machines/software.
daniel_reetz··on Fluorite lenses: Corrective capabilities beyond ordinary optical glass
Pretty sure that was calcite - famous for double refraction.

daniel_reetz··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
Roughly speaking, they're not people and not thinking.
daniel_reetz··on DIY Book Scanner
Lots of work behind the scenes. Welcome back.
daniel_reetz··on DIY Book Scanner
"alive" is a strong word but I am keeping it online as long as possible.

miss ya old friend

daniel_reetz··on Generative AI is killing our sense of awe
You might know or love this passage. "No one sees the barn".

daniel_reetz··on Wisdom from computing's past
This is absolutely true. Said another way industry is nearly exclusively focused on designing the visual - to the detriment of everything else.

Design goes far beyond the visual.

daniel_reetz··on Toyota's new $10k pickup
I am one such owner. 1994 toyota pickup.
daniel_reetz··on Bored Ape conference attendees wake up with eye pain, vision loss
Even clear "sunglasses" made of polycarbonate can provide excellent UV protection, but no telling if it's enough to protect against a blacklit room or stage laser that's been set up by incompetents.
daniel_reetz··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to?
For curious hacker types interested in aerospace, infrastructure, and the history of computing, I HIGHLY recommend Omega Tau Podcast . For computing nerds, check out, for example, Episode 248. For flight nerds, Episode 91, for infrastructure nerds, Episode 146.

daniel_reetz··on Google Brain founder says big tech is lying about AI danger
Commercially, this is true. But governments have a long history of developing technologies (think nuclear/surveillance/etc) that fall under significant regulation.
daniel_reetz··on Disney packed big emotion into a little robot
I used to work at Disney Research. This is a great example of the kinds of problems that get explored there. The constraints are totally different than the normal consumer-focused engineering you find elsewhere, because the creative conceits are simultaneously a challenge and a get-out-of-jail-free card.

The impossible parts of problems could be solved by visual sleight of hand or some artistic trick, leaving you open to explore and solve some really interesting application specific problems with technology. The much, much harder part is making any of this research work robust and compelling enough to actually show in the parks.
