danboarder··on Why free will is required for true artificial intelligence
My take on your perspective is that you've bought into an idea that is essentially the "tail wagging the dog". As we see in particle physics, the observation of an event affects the presentation of that event. So from this lens, the physical world as we observe itself exists in the eye of the observer.

As Schopenhauer put it, "it is the laws of nature that arise from a transpersonal will, not the will from the laws of nature".

A good read on the topic:

danboarder··on Tell Congress: Defeat the HPSCI Surveillance Bill
From the article: "Section 702 allows the government to conduct surveillance inside the United States by vacuuming up digital communications so long as the surveillance is directed at foreigners currently located outside the United States. It also prohibits intentionally targeting Americans. Nevertheless, the NSA routinely (“incidentally”) acquires innocent Americans' communications without a probable cause warrant. Once collected, the FBI can search through this massive database of information by “querying” the communications of specific individuals."

How can this law exist alongside the Bill of Rights 4th Amendment?

4th Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

danboarder··on Who Is BasedBeffJezos, Leader of the 'E/Acc' Movement?
I think Forbes runs their site somewhat like substack, where citizen-journalists/bloggers can start a newsletter sub-site on their platform.
danboarder··on Disturbed Lands (National Park Service)
In the article a point is made that not all "disturbance" is of human origin, referencing natural storms and floods as examples.

To consider another perspective, if one's preferred aesthetic is grassland plains, than the natural emergence of trees might be considered a disturbance.

In common lexicon, the term disturbed is also used in reference to a 'disturbed person', as in a mentally disturbed person -- generally also a negative or undesirable status, so in that context I would agree these negative or positive predispositions tend to be psychological phenomenon driven by conscious or unconscious perspectives.

danboarder··on Disturbed Lands (National Park Service)
Interestingly, terms used by developers and builders tend to have a positive bias, for example when roads and buildings are also referred to as resources and "improvements to the land". I am fascinated by how different contexts and mental lenses or framing can bias the perspective on a thing like a road or building or other "disturbance".
danboarder··on Disturbed Lands (National Park Service)
I can appreciate that the term "disturbed" has a negative implied bias, but I wish the author would provide the foundational basis upon which the reader should believe or accept this assumption. The terminology later used is "loss of resources" but by definition a resource is "something that is available for use or that can be used".

danboarder··on Bluetooth Ring Remote Lets You Scroll TikTok and Flip Kindle Pages Hands Free
I posted this as I thought it was cool as well and something I had not seen yet (a remote for your phone?). My thinking was "what else could I use this for? A camera remote? Find my phone button? Send a call to voicemail?" ... I can imagine a number of uses for when I don't want to take my phone out of my pocket or pick it up etc but still would be useful to interact with it for some purpose like those examples...
danboarder··on Large Balloon Reflector: a potentially game-changing antenna design
I thought of using a similar technique to build low cost concentrated solar arrays with a pump that adjusts the air pressure within to automatically focus and optimize the incoming light onto the CSP hot end.
danboarder··on Realizing each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own
A beautiful and poetic response, thanks for sharing and clarifying your thoughts further.
danboarder··on Realizing each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own
I imagine your perception of "straight forward and simple", is itself a simplification of the many complexities that make up one's life; for example, to start with, the infinite biological complexity of the cells, nervous system, brain, and pondering how thoughts and ideas flow through one's consciousness...
danboarder··on Realizing each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own
I found this when looking to contrast with how some think of others as non-player characters (NPCs in gaming vernacular).

Sonder (uncountable) (neologism) The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living despite one's personal lack of awareness of it.

This is insightful as it brings a sense of introspection and humanizes the "other" unknown people around us as deserving the same level of respect we expect from others, while the NPC concept when applied to daily life does the opposite.

danboarder··on An antiquated law rules mining in the West
I think the previous comment is saying that Tax itself is the "royalty" or cut that the government (people) get from the mining operations. If they build a successful operation they will have to pay taxes and will generate local jobs as well, all benefiting the local people and their government. I tend to agree with this, and any added "royalty" is essentially another tax or fee that will discourage investment in that local area.
danboarder··on I made a new type of 3D printer to make barrels, springs, screws, rods [video]
Yep, I thought this rotational axis was the most innovative 3D printer mod I've seen in a long time (since the "infinite" belt bed printers a few years ago), I am hoping RepRap or other open source community can pick up on it.

danboarder··on 18th-century math technique shows simpler AI models don't need deep learning
It's in the article (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S092523122... ) but I think the posted article does make it more understandable than the paper/abstract title "Additive autoencoder for dimension estimation".
danboarder··on Ask HN: What's the most minimal way to setup a shop on personal website?
Stripe has been adding low code tools that I find to be very light and functional that can be added to simple html pages: https://stripe.com/docs/payments/checkout
danboarder··on Why Congress is considering a ‘right to repair' law for car owners
not certain if this is the federal bill being introduced in Congress that they are referring to, I'm guessing there could be more than one as clarifying rights to things you own is a growing movement: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/6570

Edit - from the article, here is the current bill: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/383...

danboarder··on The Urgency of the Quantum Computing Race with China
Sounds about right. But also in the US we already have billions in private research from IBM, Google, etc. So I don't think the US is actually "behind" on this.
danboarder··on Researchers Achieve Historic Milestone in Energy Capacity of Supercapacitors
To be fair, the article does have a direct link to the referenced technical study published in Nature:

danboarder··on Ocean discovered beneath Earth's crust, more water than on the surface
I would update to that URL but can no longer edit the link ...
danboarder··on JanOS: Turn your phone into an IoT board (2015)
I added that, thanks. Are there any newer approaches to using a spare Android phone as an IoT board, as an alternative to finding a Rasberry Pi that is often out of stock?

Also I'm looking for breakout boards that make it easy to interface with GPIO pins, I've found a few that can do USB to GPIO on sites like Adafruit, but few review of what is available currently and if it works with recent versions of Android, etc.

danboarder··on The pros and cons of starting up in a downturn (2009)
From a layman's view I would say yes - many companies like AirBNB, Dropbox, etc started in 08 / 09...
danboarder··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
"Fifty years ago today, on March 23, 1973, Alexander P. Butterfield, the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, issued a rule that remains one of the most destructive acts of industrial vandalism in history. ... The rule imposed a speed limit on US airspace. Not a noise standard, which would make sense. A speed limit."

Imagine how quiet hypersonic planes would be now if the rule had been a based on loudness instead of speed. I imagine getting from LA to NY in an an hour in near-silence... That would be awesome!

danboarder··on There's a way to upgrade an M1 Mac's memory and storage (2021)
Agree, I would add "...but it's not easy" to the title but I'm past the HN edit window.
danboarder··on The lab that’s growing mushroom computers
It is pop-sci, but to skip past the fluff and get to the meat of it, there are some interesting links to research further in the article, like this one:

Towards fungal computer: Abstract We propose that fungi Basidiomycetes can be used as computing devices: information is represented by spikes of electrical activity, a computation is implemented in a mycelium network and an interface is realized via fruit bodies. In a series of scoping experiments, we demonstrate that electrical activity recorded on fruits might act as a reliable indicator of the fungi’s response to thermal and chemical stimulation. A stimulation of a fruit is reflected in changes of electrical activity of other fruits of a cluster, i.e. there is distant information transfer between fungal fruit bodies. In an automaton model of a fungal computer, we show how to implement computation with fungi and demonstrate that a structure of logical functions computed is determined by mycelium geometry. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.1098/rsfs.201...

danboarder··on AI Is a Mirror
I'm curious of other analogies or other ideas to help explain complex tools to non-technical friends. Many view ChatGPT as some kind of alchemy with no way to interpret what they see happening.

As Arthur C Clarke summed up in his three laws:

"any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

We're at this stage with AI for many people and trying to explain LLMs and token completion leaves most with a blank stare...

danboarder··on AI Is a Mirror
It's an analogy, and like any other it will break down if taken too far, but I was trying to explain the limitations of ChatGPT to a non-technical friend and that is where I ended up.
danboarder··on Elementary OS 7 Is Now Available to Download

danboarder··on BibleGPT – Talk to the Bible: Describe your situation or ask your question.
LOL that is fun. I've seen people doing the same hack on other chatGPT "app" interfaces. I expect it would be pretty easy to filter this if an app developer wanted to avoid it.
danboarder··on Naval Architecture (2021)
The interactive illustrations are brilliant! I've seen a few writers use these and for me it helps to grok the concepts quickly. If only school curriculum could incorporate more tools for learning like this, I think more kids would find interest in science and engineering.
