damontal··on How many people have ever lived on Earth?
What is meant by People? There is cave art and other relics dating back to 25,000 years ago. Do Neanderthals count?

damontal··on Miles Davis: A candid conversation (1962)
The story an about him in a cab with Charlie Parker with Parker getting a blowjob from a prostitute while eating fried chicken was a particularly memorable anecdote.
damontal··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
This list is not accurate. The gaming subreddit is still on Reddit. It hasn’t relocated.
damontal··on Reddark: Website to watch subreddits going dark
Why will it be quite an event? After this brief protest it is business as usual.
damontal··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
Joy of Cooking has been my go to for 25 years. It’s part cookbook, part encyclopedia, and just very useful.
damontal··on The Work of the Audiobook
Sometimes I pass a place I've passed before while listening to an audiobook and have an immediate recall of what I was listening to at the time. It's like the place is associated with what I heard at the time.
damontal··on Texas professor fails entire class from graduating- claiming they used ChatGTP
It’s not saying it can’t remember. It’s saying it doesn’t have the ability to do what it did.
damontal··on Tensegrity Wiki
There are entries for Castaneda on that wiki.
damontal··on Tensegrity Wiki
I first heard of this as a sort of practice based on the writings of Carlos Castaneda. He wrote these very interesting and entertaining books about his anthropological studies of a Yaqui Indian shaman which were later revealed to be mostly made up. The books were so compelling that they drew true believers and a practice of movements dubbed Tensegrity was developed.
damontal··on Chess is booming among teens
My kids play it because its one of the few games not blocked at their school
damontal··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
Are you confident that its responses are accurate? I’ve had it just make up facts or tack made-up facts onto actual facts. It will also fabricate references to research papers.
damontal··on Will boiling water ruin green tea?
There was someone on YouTube showing elevated radiation levels in Japanese green tea after the Fukushima incident.
damontal··on Netflix will end its DVD service after 25 years
It was so much fun filling up your queue after first signing up, finding films you always wanted to see, being able to add entire tv series, changing priorities, etc.

It was a unique kind of fun that I can’t seem to reproduce anywhere else these days.

damontal··on How Bowling Balls Are Made [video]
What is the significance of the core's shape? Looks kinda like a bullet.
damontal··on Effective Spaced Repetition
I can't learn guitar looking at fretboard diagrams like that. They completely confuse me. The only way I learn shapes like that is by repeatedly playing them.
damontal··on Amazon shuts newspaper and magazine subscriptions for Kindle and print
You can use Calibre to download the Economist each week and send it to your kindle.
damontal··on Remastered 'Myst Mobile' Game Now Available on iPhone and iPad
The novels based on the game by Rand Miller were really good. Shame they seem to be out of print.
damontal··on IRS Free File: Do Your Taxes for Free
Happened to me. Then a few years later they used my kid’s ssn. So now we all have pins.
damontal··on Twitter's API is down?
Here’s what I see:

Something Bad Has Happened At Twitter

Twitterrific users are currently unable to access the service via the iOS app. As of this writing we have heard nothing officially from Twitter and are trying to learn more. This may just be a temporary bug; it may be more a more serious issue.

As soon as we know more we'll update this message. We thank you as always for your support and patience as we work through this problem.

damontal··on Five mildly anti-Buddhist essays
Hitchens didn’t really address Buddhism in any meaningful way. He made a quip once about the Buddhist saying this glass of scotch isn’t really there and Hitchens’ response was something about how he rejected that take because he enjoyed the scotch.

He seemed to dismiss it because it was a religion rather than address any of its positions in a substantial way. Probably because he couldn’t give as forceful or witty a counter argument to it as he could Christianity.

damontal··on Aleister Crowley, the Wickedest Climber Ever? (2022)
I’m really jaded towards guitar solos but that solo always makes me stop whatever it is I’m doing. The song plods on and on and is a bit boring but the solo just bursts out of it and wakes you up out of the trance induced by what’s going on around it.
damontal··on Cormac McCarthy loves a good diner
“There’s a man who likes eggs with his pepper.”

I think of this line any time I put pepper on my eggs.

damontal··on The Fermi paradox revisited: Technosignatures and the contact era
or we are in a simulation
damontal··on I’ve been battling cancer last 2 years, but now only have a few days left
I was in the hospital with a blood clot and was told by the ER doctor that I could die at any moment.

Quotes like the above, ideas, feelings about meaning, thoughts about my wife and kids all were completely absent. I just felt blank and completely alone. No words or concepts or language could penetrate that feeling.

damontal··on Yerba Mate – A Long but Current History (2021)
does mate actually have cancer causing properties or does the cancer come about from long term sipping a hot drink through a straw?
damontal··on Disputing a Parking Fine with ChatGPT
I asked for a poem about red chickens and it gave me something passable.

Then I asked for a poem about blue chickens and it was basically the same poem.

damontal··on Disputing a Parking Fine with ChatGPT
My HSA upstated their app and the update is a real step backwards in usability. I wanted to write a complaint but was too busy and figured what’s the point?

Just put a few details into chatGPT and now have a pretty good letter to send.

damontal··on Mac OS 9
I want to zap the pram and fire up Myst.
damontal··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
I read Jude the Obscure recently after seeing it on the bookshelf of a character in the HBO show Westworld. It was a very controversial book in its day because of its portrayal of marriage. I found it pretty bleak and yes shocking. It made me want to do a deep dive into Hardy’s other works though.
