dalys··on The Electric Car Atop Europe’s Sales Charts Isn’t a Tesla or VW
There are new EU laws regarding charging infrastructure, which is not going to solve everything really, but help.

Pretty much all new buildings will require the infrastructure for charging at every parking spot, if you have parking inside the building. Buildings that undergo major renovations will also have this requirement. But actually charging points / boxes you have to install is a bit lower if I remember, only 1 per parking lot or something.

Thankfully these laws will also be applied retroactively from 2025, so all old buildings have to get their act together by then. These laws do not apply to singe family homes.

dalys··on The Electric Car Atop Europe’s Sales Charts Isn’t a Tesla or VW
And that Tesla Model 3 price is not even so bad. The cheapest Model 3 (Standard Range Plus) here in Sweden is £50k/€55k/$65k.

The base Zoe, with the 52kWh battery, is £30k/€33/$39k.

I recently bought my first car and would've loved to go electric, but nothing with decent battery size and boot size in my budget yet. I got a Passat GTE Sportswagon for now. All trips inside Stockholm I can drive on pure electric so I'm still quite happy.

dalys··on OpenAI API
I just sent in a request to join the waiting list, for the company I work at, Kognity. The potential for this in the EdTech field is mindblowingly amazing!

There are a few good examples of educational help on the list but it's really only scratching the surface.

I'm really excited and hope Kognity and EdTech in general can use this for even more value-full (both for students and teachers) tasks soon.

dalys··on A new class-action lawsuit takes aim at real estate agents and their 6% fee
Not sure how it is in different countries but in Sweden I haven't heard of anyone using an agent on the buying side. Not sure anyone would need one.

I personally think the whole real estate agent thing is a huge scam that will be solved with tech pretty soon. There are already options here for selling your house yourself through a DIY agency that just provides the boiler plate legal papers needed for 1/10th the cost. The only thing a conventional real estate agent does extra on that is pretty much host the showings.

dalys··on Ask HN: Why do tutorial writers combine 10 technologies when 1 or 2 would do?
I was recommended Stephen from a colleague and now I've also enjoyed Stephen Grider's courses. I also really like them and his style! So far I've only done Vue JS essentials and Complete React Native. If I could be selfish for a moment I wish he would do at least one more Vue course with some more advanced concepts and tackling managing a large project with Vue.
dalys··on Show HN: Fully-automatic image background removal tool
Hello! What's the bigger app? Are you still working on that and this is just a nice little side project?
dalys··on Meal frequency and timing in health and disease
The biggest spokesperson for intermittent fasting, Martin Berkhan, just released his long awaited book. https://leangains.com He also has tons of blog posts dating back many years on his site that should be a bit more easily accessible than reading the research papers directly.

I guess a TL;DR is that fasting is good for health in most animals.

dalys··on 9-5 Is Out. Try the 1-6 Instead
I saw some other comments that this doesn't work with kids.

Not sure I follow exactly. The point is that 5 hour work days can be a better setup than 8 hour days (given that no manager is in your way etc.). What's stopping you from putting those hours in when the kids are in school?

I would agree of course that choosing to be employed in a 9-5 job is probably a much better deal when you have kids because of parental leave.

dalys··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
I have an induction stove and I use a diffusion plate like these http://www.frabosk.it/ita/prodotto_scheda.jsp?idprodotto=099 to be able to use my moka brewer. They work for gas stoves as well.
dalys··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Here in Sweden, and I suspect in many many countries, revenues and profits and pretty much all numbers in a limited liability stock (the most common kind) company are public information. Here is Spotify for example https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=sv&tl=en&u=http%3A... (allabolag.se is a third party site aggregating these numbers.)

Also, income statements are public information, yet making both of these public information has not imploded the economy. Rather the opposite it seems. It is for example a huge benefit when you are looking for a job to be able to go to the interview and ask why the company never has made any profit the last five years, just as a simple example. Also very good for anyone in the B2B segment.

dalys··on Openfood – Open access info about barcoded food products sold in Switzerland
Hi! I work for Lifesum, their competitor. We have a mostly crowd sourced barcode database connected to our food. That works pretty good actually and people are keen to adding food with correct values and connecting the barcode. Here in Europe products are usually added before they hit the shelves because users get them as samples or similar. I believe that we may have a bigger database than MyFitnessPal because they are very US centric while we have a user base spread out all over the world (including the US of course). Further on, if we presume our database is bigger than MyFitnessPal, we probably have the most complete food / barcode database in the world.
dalys··on Show HN: Whosfiring
I first laughed out actually, but I think it's a good idea and I helped with a contribution. I like other people also think this would be a helpful tool for recruiters and could also be a good tool just for researching employers current or historical firings.

dalys··on You Need More Lumens
Wouldn't it be better to set f.lux to a latitude of 0 degrees and a longitude of 0 degrees?

I live at 59°N 18°E so the opposite hemisphere would mean I currently would have daylight between 02:29 and 19:31. While 0, 0 gives you roughly 06:00 - 18:00.

dalys··on Time series database Graphite seems to be falling into disfavor
Thanks for your thoughts Gregory!

We're also in the process now of finding a good storage solution for time series data at my dayjob. We're not storing any server metrics, but more personal user health data and related metrics. So we want the flexibility of being able to write new metrics on your personal timeline without altering a schema. Most reads would be querying single users timeline to fetch their data and deliver through APIs for rendering in clients. Also of course to do analysis on all users timelines, find correlations etc. but those queries are less frequent and not so time critical. I'm starting working on a prototype now with MongoDB. Other DBs that have come up has been InfluxDB, Riak TS, Amazon DynamoDB and probably some others I don't remember. Haven't actually thought that much about Postgres, but thanks for your links to your blog posts I will read up on how Postgres might work. Most other non-time series data would still be in our MySQL setup.

dalys··on Show HN: Highbrow – Bite-sized email courses delivered to your inbox daily
I also second this. A good approach may be to show 3-5 subjects (e.g. Philosophy, Startups, Architecture) and highlight one of the courses that would be the best beginners course. So if I'm interested in philosophy it's very easy to just see immediately where I could/should begin and click just one button. Going in to feature creep here but; as I just signed up I haven't completed a course yet, obviously, so I don't know what happens then, but it would be great (for retention etc.) to be recommended a natural next course to take as well. Dumb it down for the user even more. Actually what I would do is to have a button in the last email of a course that would read "Continue with GREATEST PHILOSOPHERS IN HISTORY". So just one click and I would be in the loop again.

I definitely got in to a "oh this is nice.. and this too.. and these two would be cool..". At the same having the full catalogue of courses available is good of course, but don't overwhelm the first time user.

I would test having the "popular courses" feature, or something like proposed above, just under your headline actually. So it's super easy to see what the site is really about without even having to scroll. That would show off the kind of content you have and even though your name is Highbrow, it might not be clear if you're teaching out nail painting techniques or philosophy when I just read the headline and the feature list you have.

Great idea anyway and nice execution. :)
