dablya··on The Power of Saying "I Don't Know"
It demonstrates confidence in the person admitting to not know something. NOBODY is comfortable sitting there admitting to not knowing one thing after another after another. People are a lot more comfortable admitting ignorance when they don't expect to have to do it often.
dablya··on Judge OKs iPhone class action against Apple, AT&T
They are arguing that in fact people did NOT know what they were getting into. People were signing up for 2 year contracts with AT&T while Apple had a 5 year exclusivity contract with AT&T. Meaning people were locking themselves into 5 year commitments without realizing it.

dablya··on 5 Marketing Books Every App Developer Needs to Read
Can anybody comment on "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials)"? I can't tell if it's a self-help type book or not...
dablya··on Google Remotely Deletes a Pair of Apps from Android Phones
You have to explicitly agree to the TOS for the android market before installing any app from it. If you install apps yourself (outside the market), google can't touch them.

dablya··on Maybe computerized trading isn't the problem, but the solution?
Don't they claim the benefit of HFT is the liquidity it provides? Now it turns out they can pull that liquidity when it's needed the most?
dablya··on [dead]
Not really... "But can the feds force Hushmail to modify the Java applet sent to a particular user, which could then capture and sends the user’s passphrase to Hushmail, then to the government?" ... "... The general point is that it is potentially detectable by the end-user, even though it is not practical to perform this operation every time. This means that in Java mode the level of trust the user must place in us is somewhat reduced, although not eliminated.

The extra security given by the Java applet is not particularly relevant, in the practical sense, if an individual account is targeted."

dablya··on Apple insult their customers, women, free speech
But they do prevent me from installing iBoobies (or whatever they just removed from the store) by other means right? Unless I jailbreak the phone (the bottle), which I assume they don't encourage, they're controlling not just the restaurant, but also how i consume the alcohol...
dablya··on Apple insult their customers, women, free speech
I agree with it having nothing to do with free speech. However, your analogy seems off. I can buy any other brand bottle of alcohol and drink it at home and behave how I want to. Apple expects a strict code of conduct out of me even at home. And in this case they seem to be changing the conduct they allow.

It's definitely within their right, but surely we can complain about it.

dablya··on Why are the Russians so good at chess?
This was around '89? I think they were switching from a 10 to 11 year program and whoever was in school already at that time skipped a grade.
dablya··on Ok lets end this anthropic principle crap now
Do you know how unlikely you are to win 10 times in a row? The odds of you winning 10 times in a row are exactly the same as the odds demonstrated by the results of the last 10 times powerball was run.

Do you find the results of last 10 powerball runs surprising?

dablya··on When Is A Good Business Model A Scam?
That seems even more illegal... You're describing betting on a coinflip with a 10% vig.
dablya··on Ask HN: Please review my concept
Are there any security issues with this? I mean, if I used this, I would be adopting a signature that has been perfected by someone else...

I also agree with working the gallery into the front page somehow. The gallery is what explains it best i think.

dablya··on My First Ritalin Experience
How do you know those two wouldn't be even better had they not used amphetamines?
dablya··on Startup uses flawed contract with consultant, has to go to court to stay alive
If the company is operated in such a way that it promises to pay people and then doesn't, perhaps a more relevant question is, how do we keep more people from getting scammed into working for free.
dablya··on Startup uses flawed contract with consultant, has to go to court to stay alive
The company hired someone else to continue development of the consultant’s code — in response, the consultant sued for copyright infringement.
dablya··on Montana city asks for social network logins on job application
That quote is in reply to: "Another concern the applicant raised was that by providing the City with a Facebook user name and password the City not only has access to the applicant's page but also to the pages belonging to all of the applicant's Facebook "friends.""

I think they get it just fine, they just don't care.

dablya··on Montana city asks for social network logins on job application
FTA:

"You know, I can understand that concern. One thing that's important for folks to understand about what we look for is none of the things that the federal constitution lists as protected things, we don't use those. We're not putting out this broad brush stroke of trying to find out all kinds of information about the person that we're not able to use or shouldn't use in the hiring process," Sullivan said.

dablya··on How to block the DiggBar
"No, wait...." moment in 3..2..1
dablya··on [dead]
I happen to like Target more as well, but I really don't mind going to, or the idea of Wal-Mart either. However, the article does read shady...
dablya··on How to block the DiggBar
There is a direct link to the page in the digg bar itself and when clicked, the "fuck you" message remains (the digg bar disapears). Does the referrer change depending on which frame the request comes from?
dablya··on Ask HN: I've had some software developed, now the coder is holding me for ransom.
Who owns the source code according the agreement? How were the milestones defined?

You can technically reverse engineer the code (it will not look exactly like the original). Depending on the agreement though, if the coder owns the source, you're probably better off not doing that.

Next time specify who owns the source in the agreement, and make sure that you're getting the source as you release the funds.

dablya··on Ask HN: Please review my app: RightSignature.com - Easy Online Document Signing
I've integrated with a similar service at work. Do you provide an API for uploading documents?
dablya··on Outsourcing graphic design at 99designs.com
" At the end of the day, there is a certain irony in spec work. A prospect requesting it is ultimately saying, 'My project isn’t important enough to hire a professional who will take the time to understand my situation and goals and invest the time needed to create a suitable solution.' "

Is there something wrong with is? If I want to create a webapp and have no clue about graphic design, I would be happy with something that looks ok. I'm not looking for somebody to understand my situation, I just want something better then a border="1" table with default buttons.

dablya··on It's No Joke: Real Time Search is a Big Deal.
He used twitter search to find everybody and their dog twittering about it. I think his argument is that google search is not set up to provide this kind of information as quickly.
dablya··on Carly Fiorina: Government shouldn't decide executive pay
Where are these talented people going to go? If there are still banks around that are able to pay them what they want (without taking bailout money), why is there a need for the bailouts at all?
