d-d··on Unlearning perfectionism
Unlearn perfectionism by becoming mentally perfect. Hmm, could take a while.
d-d··on Ask HN: What do you think of the Wordle guy not monetizing it?
Why do shopping malls build selfie traps into the walkways now? Why is everyone's backdrop on Zoom so aesthetic? Why are brilliant computer scientists spending their best years reinventing banking? Why are talented artists leaving their easels behind to draw pixel zombies?
d-d··on Drone carrying a defibrillator saves its first heart attack patient in Sweden
In a world full of defib drones swarming the skies surely donut sales would plummet.
d-d··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
I can't access my own data.

Someone already signed up using my SSN.

d-d··on Browse the web like its 1999
That old Windows interface and the Netscape logo are like a portal to another universe.
d-d··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
I talk to God throughout the day and focus on listening. This includes some light Bible reading and expecting answers. Transparent, concise, empathic, respectful prayers seem to be answered with great enthusiasm. God is dad, but dad is also God. It is both odd and fantastic.
d-d··on Ask HN: How do you deal with hobbies, etc., when you have diagnosed depression?
I was plagued by anxiety and negative thinking for twenty years. I could barely make eye contact with people. It wasn't until I started praying to God as best I understood him to be with as few words as possible, focusing on listening for the minutes and days to follow, that I was led to answers that cured everything in a matter of days.
d-d··on Ask HN: How did you adjust your “side-projects” personality to adult life?
> For who of you, willing to build a tower, doth not first, having sat down, count the expense, whether he have the things for completing? lest that he having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all who are beholding may begin to mock him, saying -- This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
d-d··on Goodbye CSS Modules, Hello TailwindCSS
The original point of CSS was to remove style code from HTML. This made a ton of sense twenty years ago. Web content was often saved directly to static files, so imagine having to update styles across hundreds of HTML files manually without VS Code.

Tailwind seems like it could be very useful if one's UI is strictly component based. Otherwise it seems like a portal back into writing HTML on Windows 98 using notepad. Either way, thankful for innovation and more options.

d-d··on Digital Minimalism: What are the alternative to screen time?
Do something for someone else that makes them know they're loved, appreciated or at the very least seen.

I'm convinced even one genuine comment can profoundly impact the course of history.

d-d··on Show HN: Where I get the last word
Here's my 4 emoji-bit encoded opinion:

  facepalm parrot
  fire facepalm
  facepalm parrot
  fire facepalm parrot pirate
  facepalm parrot
  fire facepalm
d-d··on FBI arrests man for plan to kill 70% of Internet in AWS bomb attack
A more direct approach to serverless technology.
d-d··on Ask HN: I'll Build the Top Comment
Build something with zero practical value, but not necessarily with entertainment in mind either. Oh, and I want 10%.
d-d··on Mass amateurization
Random guys on YouTube have saved me at least a dozen trips to the car repair shop; but there's all that noise I gotta sift through. Good luck and Godspeed sorting through all the quackery if you ever come down with a rare health issue. There are so many junior-whatevers that flat out shouldn't be putting out content for anyone anywhere; much less the internet.

It's a double edged sword.

d-d··on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency prices have fallen sharply over the last few days
It will be interesting seeing how cryptocurrency performs during and after worldwide panic surrounding the coronavirus, the fed printing a trillion USD and so forth.

I was astonished when Bitcoin rose above $30 so calling it a "crash" at $6,000 might be somewhat accurate short-term, but anything over $0.00 for randomized bits on a hard drive will always seem bananas to me.

d-d··on Reflecting on the first two decades of our foundation
That's legalistic though.

If you're withholding the fruits of labor from workers because "too bad, bro; you signed the paper" then you're not really trying to be kind to anyone. You just want to be rich and appear to be kind.

d-d··on Reflecting on the first two decades of our foundation
Isn't it just depriving the employees of the philanthropy money they labored to produce?
d-d··on Reflecting on the first two decades of our foundation
Can someone explain to me why it's more philanthropic to amass billions instead of sharing profits with employees?

Like why doesn't Gates or Bezos give everyone a $100k bonus and keep a billion?

d-d··on Nothing Changes Until You Do
One example might be the growing homeless population in California. Many of these individuals are responsible and hard working, but without an advocate they're trapped in a downward spiral with zero chance of reentry to society.
d-d··on Ask HN: What's it like to not own a smartphone?
> Hard to say "what it's like"..

Are you ever excluded or written off as crazy for going phoneless?

d-d··on Principles of the American Cargo Cult (2003)
I can't say I agree with most of these points, but

> Certainty is strength

> [and survivorship bias]

This I have definitely seen and experienced. Back when I thought I knew everything some people followed me and copied what I did. I unwittingly became a leader simply by being arrogant. Now that I have a little wisdom that's all out the window.

Confidence is magnetic even if its foundations are nonsense. I think the mechanism is similar to clickbait but maybe less intentional.

d-d··on Category Theory for Programmers (2014) [pdf]
I was able to see how the automation software I was designing would ultimately be an equivalent experience to its manual counterpart and thus be pointless to build.

This reads like common sense but it wasn't; there were thousands of lower level factors. Studying the mechanism of analogy and "sameness" seems to help the mind with abstraction. Perhaps because it is the differences in data which reveal what is most useful to know when creating.

In other words, I think a perspective that can see more of the similarities can "diff" and solve problems more quickly.

d-d··on Category Theory for Programmers (2014) [pdf]
The practical takeaway for me is being able to see patterns and systems I never would have seen otherwise.

I avoid a lot more pointless building; sometimes entire projects. The things I do end up creating come from a much deeper place of true need.

d-d··on Things everyone in ML should know about belief formation in humans [video]
I'm convinced she's right about our brains overfitting to the first belief that has persistent feedback even in complete absence of reason.

Because I'm doing it right now.

This seems to explain a lot regarding news feeds and their cause of so much outrage and odd beliefs. The fact that I can't even verify said outrage and odd beliefs in the real world is the real punch to the gut, and a good reason to get out more. And maybe unplug permanently.

d-d··on Ask HN: Best Way to Measure Progress?
I've found spreadsheet type programs to be sufficient for things like this. I can track whatever data I want, and custom graphs are typically built in.
d-d··on Ask HN: CS, still a good career in 3-5 years?
Unpopular opinion: it's not a good career unless you are the best of the best.

IMO blue collar work is a better option because it's easier work and more stable, and lets you have a life outside work. In software the hours are increasing to no real benefit, and free time is burnt just keeping with the times. The evolution of tools, best practices and high availability of quality knowledge has made it trivial to spin up new hires which makes everyone highly expendable; not to mention that there are now millions of unwashed masses happy to accept lower wages just for their chance.

There was a HN post a while back where some guy was begging to pay for a code job. What does that tell you? Software workers are also now pitted against a global market with outsourcing and programs like H-1B which has raised the bar by increasing the pool of highly educated candidates and people who commit resume fraud. They're likely also more willing to work long hours for less pay just to be in the US. Software wages have also stagnated for ten years.

d-d··on Show HN: I'm building a robot that performs haircuts [video]
I used to be excited by new technology. Now I'm thinking we're just automating ourselves into a far, far worse existence largely driven by greed.
d-d··on FastMRI initiative releases neuroimaging data set
... are these people aware these images of their bodies are publicly available?
d-d··on This isn't fun anymore (2017)
Email me your details.

I must set the jacket free.

d-d··on This isn't fun anymore (2017)
The internet used to be a paradise of sorts. Sure, there was the occasional troll, affiliate link or Viagra ad in your inbox; but that was the spice of the 'net. Today it's all spice, no curry.
