cylinder714··on The Pen, Mightier (2011)
A couple of thoughts:

- I met a clerk at a bakery I frequented (for business, not pleasure) who made a tight fist with a pen whenever she wrote down an order. How do you hold a pen or pencil? I think the ideal is to hold it as lightly as possible with your thumb, fore- and middle fingers.

- A fountain pen has the least amount of friction of any writing instrument; I learned to write with one in grade school, and managed to forget it later. But I recently picked up a cheap Zebra V-301 for USD$5 and am trying it again.

cylinder714··on California lawmakers rein in bill to limit car speeds
ISTR that turnpike highways in the eastern U.S. simply record when cars reach each tollbooth. If a car arrives too soon at a booth, the driver is automatically fined for driving too fast. Can anybody confirm this?

I'm not very familiar, but isn't the point of recitation to do it yourself, or is it sufficient to listen to recitation?

GRML is a successor of sorts to Knoppix: https://grml.org/

It's an Austrian LiveCD based on Debian; version 2024.02 was just released. It's not as slick as Knoppix, but it does come with lots of utilities and can start an X Windows desktop.

cylinder714··on Scenes from the last operational Morse-code radio station in North America
The S.S. Red Oak Victory, a Victory ship built in Richmond, California, is now a museum ship berthed near where it was built. Its radio room, operated by an amateur radio club, is open on Sundays.

cylinder714··on The Eagle Obsession – Space: 1999 documentary
"Join the exploration of a fascinating cultural phenomenon. The legacy of the Eagle Transporter from Space:1999 reflects the dreams of a generation. It also embodies a nostalgia for a future that never occurred, yet still resonates today.

"THE EAGLE OBSESSION is a visually stunning feature-length documentary that follows sci-fi creator Jeffrey Morris as he investigates the origins of the iconic vessel and the ongoing global impact of a unique moment in human history—when people walked on the Moon."

The documentary will include interviews with Barbara Bain, Nick Tate (Captain Alan Carter) and special effects supervisor Brian Johnson.

You're right. I clarify: he wrote, "So I spent a couple of hours of my own time making a static version of the AMP website." That static version is unfortunately missing:

cylinder714··on John Lasseter drew the BSD daemon logo
The espresso milkshakes at Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe--well, the food is fine, but the shakes are glorious.
cylinder714··on John Lasseter drew the BSD daemon logo
OpenBSD runs fine on my X220i, and its Intel WiFi (iwn) is supported. But, the firmware has to be downloaded separately, so you either have to copy the firmware onto a USB drive and run fw_update after installation, or plug in Ethernet before installing, and it'll download the firmware automatically after the first boot.
cylinder714··on Scrum Sucks
It seems like scrum is the very antithesis of "Individuals and interactions over processes and tools."
cylinder714··on Terse: A language with hi-level look-and-feel, low-level control (1995) [pdf]
See Nils M. Holm's SubC compiler above.
cylinder714··on Terse: A language with hi-level look-and-feel, low-level control (1995) [pdf]
Nils M. Holm's t3x.org is filled with the most wonderful toys. An example:

"SubC is a fast and simple public domain compiler for a clean subset of the C programming language. It can compile itself and passes gcc -Wall -pedantic. Its internals are described in detail in the book Practical Compiler Construction. Note that SubC is a teaching vehicle rather than a production compiler."

https://t3x.org/subc/index.html

And when I say toys, I don't mean mean plastic, trivial items. I mean, I want to buy all of his books, download all of his tools, and collect the whole set, like Legos or other toys never did for me when I was a child.

“having grown up with it” sort of thing

Kind of like beans on toast.... ;-)

cylinder714··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
If you're heading to Tahoe or Reno, Dave's Giant Hamburger in Fairfield makes burgers better than an animal-style Double-Double, and bigger: 1/3-pound (151g) patties and double-thick cheese. Ask for fried onions and "the hot sauce." The shakes and chili are brilliant, too.

cylinder714··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
Agreed! Big Mac patties are wafer-thin and that bun disc in the middle makes the sandwich look bigger. I'll bet they're the most profitable burger on their menu.
