cyberlurker··on Teardown of the 14″ MacBook Pro M2 with Apple’s Help
This is incredible and the first time I have ever heard of money for returning old, damaged parts.
cyberlurker··on A large network of fake Google Maps comments/reviews and fake businesses
Maybe money laundering front?
cyberlurker··on NYC Slice
I’m so relieved to see others recognizing this and it’s not just me.

My theory is NYC had better average pizza in the past but people move out of the city over time. They probably move to lower cost areas. Many pizza makers in NJ are originally from NYC. The pizza is better in NJ on average.

cyberlurker··on NYC Slice
There are also bad Italian restaurants, bagel places, coffee shops, Chinese food, etc.

It bothers me that someone would say they are all good. There is no need to hype up NYC. You can get very high quality food, but not just by randomly going into a place.

cyberlurker··on NYC Slice
Average New York pizza quality is highly over rated. If you go to any random spot you are likely to get bad pizza. I think this has changed over time. Often there is better pizza in New Jersey.

This is not a joke. I strongly disagree with advising people to try random NYC pizza places. My theory is a lot of the good pizza makers moved out of the city to the suburbs or lower cost cities.

cyberlurker··on Please don’t film me in 2023
You are in a bubble. We have problems today but we don't have separate water fountains for races enforced by law.
cyberlurker··on Please don’t film me in 2023
Athleisure clothes are absolutely comfortable. It is insane to say that entire brand is only for sexual exhibitionism. Lol

Their clothes are also extremely well made and have outlasted similar Puma, Nike, Adidas pairs.

cyberlurker··on Ask HN: What are you looking forward to reading in 2023?
Buy a small, popular book on a topic that interests you. A physical one. Dedicate ten minutes to it before bed. If you are like most people you will fall asleep but at least read a few paragraphs before you do. And it is better than blue light from your phone.

Some nights I cant fall asleep quick so I finish books that way.

cyberlurker··on Coworkers are less ambitious; bosses adjust to the new order
Most times when I see people talking about hours worked on HN they are referring to their productive problem solving hours, like coding or research. They still put in the other hours doing stuff like meetings and emails. But even if someone only works 2 hours but provides value surpassing their salary, then who cares?
cyberlurker··on Maids trafficked and sold to wealthy Saudis on black market
Right, you could hire a maid and give them double the salary and normal working hours and now everyone wins. And if they move on to a better career, great, the system worked.
cyberlurker··on Ask HN: What are your best and safest investment options?
With interest rates so high and recession possibly looming a savings account would likely be best for the majority of your money. You’re looking for safe. In the US I would say open up a Wealthfront account (3.8% interest) and when you’re looking for more “risky” investing you can use their robo adviser to regularly invest some set amount of money. I am not sure of the equivalent in Europe.

But when talking about safety and return in investing in 2023 I think high interest savings accounts should not be ignored. (Backed by Gov Insurance like FDIC)

cyberlurker··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
I want to hear Lex Fridman say if he has changed his opinion or not on Elon. I am not sure about Lex. He gives a platform to people who are disingenuous and then doesn't question them hard enough.

Another person who defends Elon is Bill Maher. I am curious what he will say in the new year.

Also MKBHD.

cyberlurker··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
I have definitely changed my mind on Elon from an overly positive opinion of him to being disappointed in him. I thought his free speech push was a genuine attempt, even if a naive approach. But his immature, politics baiting tweets have really exposed who he is.

I definitely remember defending his actions in the past and apparently I was wrong. He is an asshole. I still maintain that he isn't stupid though. I enjoyed hearing him discuss SpaceX work on podcast interviews in the past.

cyberlurker··on The Uninhabitable Earth (2017)
This is not my field and I am genuinely curious, are we fucked or not? I just listened to a 3 hour podcast from Lex Fridman with these guests:

“Bjørn Lomborg is author of "False Alarm". Andrew Revkin is a climate journalist (21 years at NY Times).”

They refute many of the claims in this article about how much of a doomsday event faces us.

Are they full of shit? Is this article sensationalist?

My gut tells me Lex’s guests are downplaying too much and this article is sensationalizing the issue, but that may be my bias to look for the middle ground.

cyberlurker··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
At marathons they have those solar blankets. Law enforcement could easily provide clothing or blankets for those being raided. Everyone deserves dignity imo, even potentially guilty people. No risk involved.
cyberlurker··on Ask HN: Do people not have hobbies anymore?
I have definitely shown hobbies to other people who immediately get on my case about monetizing the project. I would say this has happened at least 2 times in the past 3 years. Every time I tell them the same thing. “I am having fun now and the effort to monetize isn't fun”.

I think I agree with OP. An alarming number of people are only thinking about money that could be made. To them, there is never enough. “Fun should not come at the expense of profit”.

I love some of these people but they are sick in the head.

cyberlurker··on WhatsApp goes down for users globally
Poor example seeing how most use gmail.com or some other centralized service for email these days or risk emails not showing up from a self host solution.
cyberlurker··on DaVinci Resolve for iPad
They have a responsibility to their shareholders. I think raising prices amid inflation is the responsible thing to do… these are not essential goods like food and fuel.
cyberlurker··on Americans' Trust in Media Remains Near Record Low
Media aside, do you really think those two wars are comparable?
cyberlurker··on The case for energy optimism
This is new information to me. Do you have a source for car batteries being recycled at a 99% rate?
cyberlurker··on The case for energy optimism
Why would I be disappointed?
cyberlurker··on The case for energy optimism
I would be pleasantly suprised if recycling is a focus earlier. But I fully expect huge landfills of batteries in the next few decades.

You can view this data online and it is normally the schools that take the majority of the budget, and they still don't have enough money either. I have no idea where they live but it is possible their police are in need of donations, unlike perhaps LAPD/NYPD.
cyberlurker··on Newsom just signed California pay transparency bill
Not sure of the answer but I have seen job postings with a special Colorado salary range to comply with their law.
cyberlurker··on The quantum computing bubble
There are publicly traded quantum companies (IonQ, etc.)
cyberlurker··on In Jackson, Mississippi, a water crisis of unparalleled scale
I suspect a lot of foreign aid is actually used to stabilize parts of the world so they don't turn into hotspots for things like terrorism. Not that there isn't a wish to improve the lives of others, but it is easier and cheaper to maintain the status quo.
cyberlurker··on Flicking the kill switch: governments embrace internet shutdowns
So, public health officials asked social media companies to stop accounts from spamming that vaccines cause autism?

There was no law and no threat, just public and private coordination.

I have no problem with that. Sorry, this is not even close to censorship.

cyberlurker··on Flicking the kill switch: governments embrace internet shutdowns
I say this as someone who still thinks it is overblown and fair that the social networks didn't let it get amplified as a distraction right before the election. (It was being pushed by people who trafficked in all kinds of misinformation)

It did come out, it was real, and had real emails from Hunter being a total idiot trying to use his Dad to make connections and get paid. It also had nudes and drug use and other embarrassing dumb shit.

It is just a distraction though. Everyone knows Hunter has problems and it had nothing to harm Biden’s character if you are an independent third party looking at the evidence.

So… this bugs me when it becomes the rally point for “censorship”. Give me a break.

cyberlurker··on Flicking the kill switch: governments embrace internet shutdowns
They passed laws making those social media companies censor them?
