cyanbane··on How crazy am I to think I actually know where that Malaysia Airlines plane is?
I think the first few paragraphs about the inner workings of being knighted and paid as "experts" is surreal and as interesting as his theory on the flight.
cyanbane··on Stripe: Bitcoin
> "I don't want to give my CC details and/or my personal information to every merchant. This usually means I either buy from fewer merchants, or pay with bitcoin if allowed. Obviously, if the merchant is going to require my info anyway then it's pointless, so it depends."

This is the entire value of bitcoin in my opinion for the average CC holder in the US. I simply don't trust people with my details. It seems like I get a new CC every few months because of some data breach, which entails me having to change any subscription services etc. Anon transactions may be a big point for some, but you are entirely correct when I will more than likely be providing my address to people who I pay with bitcoin. However, they won't have my CC details. I think it will be a better "payment buffer" than paypal. Hopefully cheaper also.

cyanbane··on Please stop at-ing your friends
I don't use FB, but I do use twitter (and slack plays into this also as I use it with friends) but you (the subscriber) always control the channel and the attention you give it. Kill your inbound channel, once that's done people will give up using it as a communication mechanism to get an idea to you.
cyanbane··on How Verizon and Turn Defeat Browser Privacy Protections
hmm, not talking about the content provider. I am saying if I am an author who was publishing something under anonymity and I assumed I was anonymous because I "cleared my cookies/Enabled Do Not Track settings" during the publication of the material - only to discover that my cookies had been circumvented via permacookie by a commercial entity - is my "moral right" of anonymity is now gone? could I claim the permacookie method was a circumvention under the DMCA?
cyanbane··on How Verizon and Turn Defeat Browser Privacy Protections
If you were an author (of any sort) could you claim that the transmissions of your material (text) that are under copyright were circumvented (DMCA) via a permacookie under your "moral rights" as an author to publish anonymously?
cyanbane··on The Tale of Studio Ghibli
I am a huge fan of Studio Ghibli's work. I read a really great book on Miyazaki and Takahata this year that discusses their early competition and the birth of Studio Ghibli. It also does a pretty in depth analysis of most of the Studio's films that came out before The Wind Also Rises.

cyanbane··on Ask HN: How can I remedy scatter brain and information overload?
I got to a similar point about 2-3 years ago. Whenever I have a task that I need to focus on I go into what I call "5 minute mode". From :00-:05 of the hour I am free to check email/twitter, call someone back, find articles to mark for reading later, etc (Dopamine hits). Then :06-:59 = "in the zone" time.

This gets harder in an office environment, but usually some headphones, a don't bother sign, and shutting down all communication channels get's it into other people's heads.

cyanbane··on One college town's uneasy embrace of drinking
(Re open container suspension) A few years ago I paid a $280 fine for walking an open beer across the street in Athens. To this article's point I think the cops pick and choose as to where they may be most effective at a given point in the day, the beer didn't have a label on it (I brewed it) and the cop may have thought it looked odd.

Although the town has stayed the same since my years in Athens, I do think there is an uptick in underage drinking in general, or at the least a larger movement to drinking harder spirits. Personally, I think there is a larger mention of liquor by name in today's music than there has been in the past and that plays a part.

cyanbane··on AWS EC2 Container Service
Same 404, I wonder if not at all CDN locations yet?
cyanbane··on Amazon’s Echo Chamber
Great read and I agree with the majority of it.

This stood out though:

>Amazon’s retail strategy of being allergic to profit does not translate well into hardware manufacturing.

Don't most gaming consoles sell at a loss? The pickup for the console maker is on the publishing rights & distribution channels and the fact they take a gamble that the hardware will get cheaper over the course of that hardware generation. I had always though that it what Amazon was trying to emulate with their hardware attempts.

cyanbane··on Independence Day
I think it was a great presentation of the material. I enjoyed all of it except I think that the audible clicking went on a little too much of the page scroll.
cyanbane··on Point – A smart house sitter
"Nothing is recorded or sent across the network. Peace of mind, without giving up on privacy."

Respect this a lot and is a major selling point for me. If the sound analysis/processing is not done over the wire (assuming on the device) will there be a way to allow for publicly produce events (i.e. integration into systems like IFTTT, etc)?

cyanbane··on Microsoft Band
Good question. The initial UI displays time. I picked one up today and have been wearing it on my normal "watch" hand. That being said I have been wearing it so that the UI is on the inside of my wrist. Definitely feels more natural when sing the UI.
cyanbane··on Microsoft Band
Been wearing it since lunch, don't really notice it all that much however I usually wear a watch. I didn't opt for the opposite hand. It has time as a large numerical on the initial UI display, so felt it could take place of my watch. I do use it with the screen on the inside of my wrist, so when I want to look at device I hold up my arm, palm towards me. Feels a lot more natural than wearing it and viewing the UI "as a watch".

Went for a run, tracked the run well. I forgot to set the device to record for a run, but it did track my steps, mileage, etc pretty well (compared it to Moves App on iOS).

Getting texts and phone call alerts on it is pretty nice, actually. I have phone off to side charging and this is a good alert system (I'm using iOS as phone).

I wish they had a button press configuration that allowed for a "flashlight" like app to display all white-light on LCD. Would almost feel magical/wizardry when taking the dog out to pee.

Will try sleep (one the main reason I bought) tonight. I use "Sleep Cycle" app on iOS (I sometimes have problems sleeping) so will be interesting to compare Band vs that app's morning results.

cyanbane··on Microsoft Band
I went and picked one of these up at lunch from local Microsoft Store/Kiosk. No line, walked right up. Sales person was very informative, helped with wrist sizing. Came with some small swag (Starbucks gift card, water bottle, etc). There were two other people at the store - one looking at Surface another started looking at Band as I was leaving, I noticed they were looking at mine as I tried it on. Not hard to purchase one, no line.

I walked by the Apple Store on the way out and there were people queued up outside to get in, probably about 10-12 deep.

It was a sign of the times, as someone who purchases products from (and develops for) both camps, I am really happy to see the competition. Happy to see MS embrace iOS devices with their new tech and happy to see Apple allow MS apps in the app store. Its not all pats on the backs between Apple and MS, but the competition benefits all us and is great to see. Plus, some cool gear is coming out of it.

cyanbane··on Microsoft Band
They do (right hand users), watch on left hand (opposite), use mouse with right hand. This device would be on the right hand for those people - the same that they move the mouse with. My question is, will it interfere with using a mouse?
cyanbane··on Microsoft Band
I wonder what considerations were taking for wearing this device while using a mouse. Most people are right handed, so this device on your right would certainly need to have a hearty outside surface I would think. It has been noted that "in front of computer" time may be "charging" time due to minor activity, but I have always thought (for me at least on the computer/mouse 5+ hours a day) an opposite hand device would be hard sell with people who use mice with that hand.
cyanbane··on Microsoft Band
Looks like it supports data relay to MapMyFitness Suite of Apps, which I would think could then relay it to HealthKit if there is not already a direct export from MS's iOS App.
cyanbane··on Ad blocker that clicks on the ads
If you really wanted to cause chaos in the macro scale then having it randomly select Ads to click would be better one would think. If an Ad network has multiple Ads on a page that were clicked I would suspect it would be easy to form some type of filter heuristic for that particular set of users. It may cause a slight bit of obfuscation for that particular "user" on their side, but as for the over all success of an Ad campaign it would not be hard to remove those entities that selected ALL the Ads assuming more than one is served on a page from a given network.
cyanbane··on Tilde.Club: I had a couple drinks and woke up with 1,000 nerds
I remember being 14 and creating ANSI art was my favorite pastime other than gaming and browsing ACiD and other creator groups art over 14.4. This taps so into that nostalgia, hope I can get a folder.
cyanbane··on Reddit
I think it just comes down to better placement of subreddit suggestions somewhere in the UI. Reddit is a very word heavy UI (which I like) but sometimes features (no matter how awesome at the core) get lost in the text or the pics/vids that standout so much on the front page.

cyanbane··on Georgia dealers want Tesla store shuttered for selling too many Teslas
Car dealerships and the three tier alcohol system seem so archaic and anti-consumer, both amaze me in their longevity and the amount of money that must be getting put into them to retain the hold.
cyanbane··on Logitech K480 – Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard
I think most people here are in a very firm or serious relationship with their keyboard. (I know I am with my Corsair mechanical). Would love to see this as a usb device that the keyboard plugs into. Would think monitoring key presses on the middle man device would not be to hard?
cyanbane··on Weird pricing of Dropbox Pro
One of the neat things about this is that it sometimes produces arbitrage that people leverage if the game does not have geo-restrictions built in. People will purchase in bulk and then trade.
cyanbane··on Show HN: I got hacked, felt paranoid, made an app – GlassWire
Thanks for the quick answer. I would pay for this in a heartbeat, great experience. Good luck to you guys.
cyanbane··on Show HN: I got hacked, felt paranoid, made an app – GlassWire
Beautiful app, I looked at the Privacy Policy on the site & breezed through the Install legalize and it doesn't seem to include specific network traffic information being relayed back to remote servers in anyway (I easily could have missed this), can you confirm that you guys are not collecting network usage statistics from the app?
cyanbane··on Judge Sentenced to 28 Years for Selling Kids to the Prison System (2013)
Is there an aggregate source for sentencing data per state? I understand sentencing varies per judge and in accordance with state laws, but you would think this data exists at the state level and abnormalities (like this judges history?) might bubble up.

Part of the value of photos are about attachment to a time and a place and as a tool to the photographer to remind them of that time. This mitigates that.

If this is satire, it's great. If not...

cyanbane··on Domain Name Registration and Geo DNS for Route 53
My guess is that is phase 2 and not far behind (which is great for us all).
