cwe··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
Building a 3D dating RPG: https://turnon.fun

Idea is to add a lot more NSFW stuff like sexy avatars and mocap animations, cinematic controls, even a marketplace of content and assets.

cwe··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K makeover sourced from the original camera negative
I’ve always hated the thing about computer dating. Why would that have been so unreasonable?
cwe··on Mercury OS
This title should have a (2019) on it. But I was happy to see this pop up again here, as it’s an increasingly possible and compelling UX for AI agents, where the rest of the chrome and complexity of computing is stripped away to the core actions we really need out of the software we use. I hope they give this a fresh look and try building it. Lindy looks like a close attempt
cwe··on Mixed Reality with Passthrough
AR has been a game changer, via face filters. More stuff is possible with it everyday, but it’s already getting a lot of usage
cwe··on Apple is building the metaverse substrate
It is happening now, which is one of the points of this piece. Apple has been laying the groundwork bit by bit since 2019, but there’s also lots of AR today, just not in “the metaverse” sense as discussed here quite yet. Snapchat filters, AirTags and UWB, and Google Lens are some of the most popular examples right now. Anything that adds a digital layer to the physical world via a computing device, is AR.
cwe··on Apple’s secretive AR and VR Headset plans altered by internal differences
UWB that is in the iPhone 11's.
cwe··on Lust in Space (2007)
From [2013], or even [2007]
cwe··on Tertill Weeding Robot
Thanks for linking. I was hoping it had some kind of sea urchin-style mouth that ate up the roots of the weeds, but it's just a tiny weed wacker underneath. Still cute
cwe··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service
5G is on the way, and will enable this stuff anywhere. MWC had tons of demos of 4k, multiplayer, and VR games streaming via 5G. A lot depends on how/when/if it's all rolled out, but unless you're currently 194 years old, it's gonna be a lot sooner than you think.

cwe··on Atlassian debuts new Jira Software Cloud with timeline view, configuration flow
Roadmap is exactly what I've been wanting in Jira for years, and have either convinced devs to build for me at internal hackathons, or hacked together myself, or bastardized in Google sheets. Can't wait to try this!
cwe··on Ask HN: Do you get good applications from “Who is hiring?”?
I got my current job from a 'Who is Hiring' post, so clearly it worked for someone! It's not a replacement for a solid recruiting team/funnel, but having been on both sides of the process I found it a useful resource. FWIW.
cwe··on Ask HN: 2.5 years old twin boys not showing enough progress in speech
Not trying to troll you, but this isn’t exactly the best forum for this kind of question. Talk to your pediatrician about speech therapy or whatever, don’t ask a technology forum.
cwe··on Montreal Moving Day: what happens when a whole city moves house at once
This doesn’t seem to apply at busy metro stations, sadly
cwe··on Sleep Scientist Warns Against Walking Through Life 'In an Underslept State'
Has no one mentioned parenthood forcing sleep deprivation for 1-3+ years?
cwe··on Getting Laid Off in Tech: The Myth of Upper Middle Class Security
Agree overall, but there are a LOT of other employers in Seattle, including lots of the big guys. In general, a layoff would be similar to the bay area experience for a talented dev.
cwe··on Software converts 360 video into 3D model for VR
Reminds me of parts of photosynth[1], glad to see people are still working on this kind of thing. Was very disappointed that photosynth didn't really pan out with building 3d models off the images, they went with just panoramas.

cwe··on Craft Wireless Keyboard for Precision, Creativity and Productivity
They should put one on both sides so you can navigate like an etch a sketch
cwe··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Dropbox using this? Can't seem to sync
cwe··on Ask HN: Anyone here using Facebook Workplace?
Hard to recall the onboarding experience, typical FB really. They seem to load in a lot of team/job profile stuff so you can easily connect with your own dept and teams. The UX is very similar to consumer FB, though they've lost some stuff and added others. Not a lot of third party integrations, but events and notes, as well as markdown support. Messaging is convenient, but not as capable as Slack. We share release notes, interesting articles, photos from events and stuff, and end up getting a lot of bug reports through it. Sadly, we've lately used private groups as a way to collect photos and parting words for people leaving the company.
cwe··on GuriVR – Describe your VR experience and the editor will do the rest
While we're discussing the dragging behavior, you also can't click on the bottom ~1/3 of the pane, seemingly because of the little cardboard/vr goggle graphic in the bottom corner.
cwe··on Donald Trump Is Elected President
Hopefully you voted for ST3
cwe··on The rational exuberance of 5G
That's a good point: does the bandwidth reach the native performance of another computer? Can a commodity phone/tablet stream much better performance?
cwe··on The rational exuberance of 5G
As someone still only dreaming of gigabit speeds, I'm having a hard time conceptualizing what that kind of speed can enable. Higher resolution video/VR, sure, but is there more? Is there a game changing use case that opens up when that kind of speed is available everywhere?
cwe··on Amazon Has Swallowed Downtown Seattle
There is quite a bit of biotech in the area, isn't there? UW Medicine and Novonordisk, as well as Fred Hutch etc.
cwe··on How to Pass the Product Manager Interview
Good PM interviews I've been in use that as part of the discussion. Discuss the issues with the messaging on the website, ask for clarification where needed to understand the customer and problem, and go from there. You shouldn't just focus on the current as currently exists, but the core problem/vision they're going for.
cwe··on End to End Learning for Self-Driving Cars [pdf]
I'd like to believe that would be the case, but I live in Seattle.
cwe··on Siri creator shows off first public demo of Viv
I feel like this would be a major blow and failure on Apple's part if this team that they already acquired was bought by a competitor. I wonder what happened that led to this not being a new version of Siri.
cwe··on Siri creator shows off first public demo of Viv
Isn't that just a workaround to get a live view of the device on the mac to show on the projector?
