cvburgess··on The fall of Quibi: how did a starry $1.75B Netflix rival crash so fast?
A thing I don't think enough people are talking about is that this launched in the era of stay-at-home but it was designed for the on-the-go person. The folks that want to watch super short-form content optimized for a smart phone are the folks on the subway or on a lunch break but now most of the world is at home surrounded by large screens and high-quality, well known content so Quibi has nearly no appeal. Give it a year ( if they can make it that long ) and I think you'll see them align with a larger on-the-go audience but at the current price point with all new, smartphone-optimized content they just don't fit into a market where people have access all day to TVs and are craving comforting, familiar favorites in juxtaposition to a world that is full of change and generally full of anxiety.
cvburgess··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
They actually have a setting for this, look for "Autoplay" in settings.
cvburgess··on Remove blacklist terminology · Issue #6475 · osquery/osquery
I wouldnt agree there. Words are powerful and just becuase they have multiple meanings does not mean that those meanings are not intertwined.

Regardless, those terms don't translate well and only make sense to people from other languages and cultures if you translate it and add the history to it.

Primary and Replica accomplishes the same goal but don't get weighed down with "what is a slave" or "why is the master in control of the slave".

Yeah, its a little inconvenient, but making software more inclusive is a pretty worthy goal and it wont take long to update the majority of tools and texts.

Staying comfortable because its convenient, while it makes other people uncomfortable, is probably why software is still largely a white male industry.

cvburgess··on Remove blacklist terminology · Issue #6475 · osquery/osquery
I think this is a great move for a number of reasons, but as one commenter said, I think Allow/Deny are just simpler terms in general.

White/Black are abstractions and adds one more hurdle for folks new to the industry - especially those from different languages and cultures where white != good and black != bad.

I think this is good for social reasons, but I hope the industry in general moves away from black/white because its just not the best way to convey these ideas, its just the one that stuck.

cvburgess··on Signal app downloads spike as US protesters seek message encryption
> WhatsApp is just nicer and smoother, and people tend to like that

Ive used both for a while and WhatsApp is aweful, at least on iOS by all standards I can find. Signal feels like iMessage with reactions, voice recordings, and handy tools. WhatsApp feels dated, clunky, and for groups it gets very very messy fast with out reactions.

cvburgess··on Phelia – React for Slack Apps
This is so wonderful, as devloping rich interactive Slack apps can be a pain. Thanks for the work!
cvburgess··on UpNext – an ePaper digital calendar for your desk
I would actually buy a product version of this. I use a Remarkable E-Ink tablet and its pretty incredible. This would be quite nice, so only the notifications i really care about ( where i need to be ) show up without sounds and colors and all the distractions would be amazing
cvburgess··on Show HN: Nonprofit Open-Source Food Delivery and Local Shopping Platform
I've been planning on building something like this for a while. I hope it succeeds and they document the journey.
cvburgess··on Slack was down
That's great to know! I look forward to trying Zulip at some point, it seems to get a lot of love in this thread.
cvburgess··on Slack was down
Has anyone tried Twist ( https://twist.com/ )? It looks a lot like Zulip but with a nicer UI. I think it is crazy that Slack has not invested more in first-class threaded, context-aware conversations.
cvburgess··on Is the Age-Old Quest for a Baldness Cure Reaching Its End?
More and more men have embraced baldness, especially with beards being the facial focal point at the moment. If it can prove to be more than a fashion trend, perhaps going bald won't be seen as an "issue" as much as just another style of appearance.
cvburgess··on Rollup now has code-splitting and we need your help
I love that there is a real effort for open source projects to seek distributed funding from the people getting benefit from all the hard work the contributors do. I don't have to buy a license, but I can support the projects I use regularly and it feels like the best of both worlds. I do wonder how sustainable funding will impact the rate of change in the Open Source / Javascript community. If you are actively investing in a project are you less likely to replace it as quickly with "the next thing" or volunteer to improve the tools that you are already using and donating to? It will be interesting to see!
cvburgess··on Why old-school PostgreSQL is so hip again
If you haven't checked out Postico, it is hands-down the nicest database GUI I've worked with: https://eggerapps.at/postico/
cvburgess··on Parcel – A fast, zero configuration web application bundler
This looks awesome!

After reading the docs though I couldn't find any mention of tree-shaking or other things that would shrink the final bundle size. Any word on that front?

cvburgess··on Build Better GraphQL APIs: Thinking in Graphs
Check out [0] and similar projects out there. GraphQL is a query language. It doesn't have to be used for APIs - the Apollo team is using it for state management [1] and others are using it to handle all sorts of non-API data. That being said, it is a Facebook technology released in the context of APIs and it is only three years (publicly) old, so naturally, that is where you are going to see the majority of usage.

cvburgess··on Build Better GraphQL APIs: Thinking in Graphs
There are really elegant solutions coming out around this - I suggest watching some of the talks from this years GraphQL summit.
cvburgess··on AWS Amplify – A declarative library for application development
We tried to use AWS mobile metrics in a project about a year ago and while it was easy to configure, the data was woefully limited compared to other mobile analytics solutions. Does anyone have recent experience that suggests its improved?

Also, what is the Authenticator? I couldn't find much with a cursory glance, just docs on the HOC.

cvburgess··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Anyone know how the new FireFox compares on battery-life? Safari crushes Chrome on this front currently, but I'm curious how FireFox compares now.
cvburgess··on The GraphQL stack: How everything fits together
During a Q&A at GraphQL Summit, GitHub said that they are accomplishing this by making their REST endpoints use the GraphQL API instead of querying the data directly. They’ve been releasing the talks online slowly so that should be available soon.
cvburgess··on GitHub Desktop 1.0
I prefer the old app - not because of electron, but because the UX is worse now (to me, at least). The old mac app made adding a repo super obvious (there was a plus button), branches had cleaner names, and the sync button looked like... a button. Now everything looks slick, but very unintuitive. I would love to see the ease of use increased considering that advanced users would probably favor the terminal anyway.
cvburgess··on Comcast accused of cutting competitor’s wires to put it out of business
This happened to me with BrightHouse (now Charter) - they cut my line thinking it was a neighbor. They told me its customary because if they disconnect a paying customer they will call in. I went 5 days without internet because the tech's availability and my work schedule didn't match up until the weekend. I was credited for 5 days. I was NOT amused, but I hope there is some regulation in the future.
cvburgess··on Launchpad: JSFiddle for GraphQL servers
Thank you for the solid work!

I didn't totally get the capabilities at first glance but the combination of the announcement post, the GitHub repo and the comprehensive samples really helped.

Being able to run these and use secrets is HUGE. Being able to get a url to point a client at is probably my favorite feature. You can prototype something without ever worrying about localhost or throwaway deployments.

cvburgess··on Southwest to Stop Overbooking as United Uproar Echoes
I think there are a lot of rules around reselling tickets post-911. I'm sure you could find a way to execute it while accounting for the new regulations, but for most airlines i don't think its worth it. They also make money off of a fluctuating ticket price or they wouldn't have them.
cvburgess··on Google Cloud SQL for Postgres
Does anyone have a good comparison between this, RDS, Aurora, Citus, Heroku PG and some of the other Postgres (and "Postgres-compatible") services?

With so many DBaaS tools available, I'd like to know the best options for things like pricing, availability, features, tooling, monitoring, etc...

cvburgess··on Ask HN: Does a viable alternative to ScreenHero exist?
The homepage says "Goodbye" and has a shutdown notice so it's probably not the best alternative... Do you know any similar services still operating?
cvburgess··on Chrome browser for businesses
After a quick search, it looks like this may still be a thing for Chrome? https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ie-tab/hehijbfgiek...
cvburgess··on Launchaco – Instantly generate a responsive, free, website
Agreed. I may use your other products, but I WILL use this and I amp happy to throw $10-$50 at you for it. Incredible work.
cvburgess··on Show HN: Commits.io - Create a poster from your code and logo
Would love a cheaper "download" option. Would be cool to use this on a shirt or mug or maybe a wallpaper.
cvburgess··on Show HN: TrueJob 1.0 – Pandora for jobs and data for everyone
Try to describe yourself without comparing it to anyone - you are assuming now that someone is familiar with Pandora and hopefully has a positive opinion of it. Why not say "Job search customized for you"
cvburgess··on Ask HN: Advice on regaining passion at work
This always sounds so nice in theory but how did you pull this off? Did you ask a manager? Quit and find a different job? Assuming you have the savings to do so, how did you just stop working for 6 months and not feel stressed out about the potential looming instability?
