cutenewt··on Stripe’s real pricing: a primer
This is really clever marketing by Lago. Good inspiration for other startups.
cutenewt··on Up to 30% of online reviews are fake and consumers can't tell the difference
Netflix removed 5-star ratings a while back; they don't have reviews either.

Seems like it hasn't impacted the user experience. Arguably improved the experience.

Perhaps other sites like Amazon and AirBnb should remove ratings and reviews too?

cutenewt··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
I hope he buys Google next. Search really sucks.
cutenewt··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
The investors can't really do anything -- the board has been dissolved.
cutenewt··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
I think it's going to be more in the other direction.

He really hates the bots, so he'll probably close up the API.

Until bots gets solved, no developer should expect the API to open up.

cutenewt··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
+1. So much opportunity for battlefield promotions right now.
cutenewt··on Ask HN: Was anyone working at Apple during Steve Jobs' return in 1997?
Sounds like a Jobsian version of Musk's "what have you done this week"
cutenewt··on Why doesn't Stripe use Stripe Billing?
Lago is really gunning for Stripe Billing.

Is Lago barking up the wrong tree? Or is there really an untapped opportunity here?

cutenewt··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
This is a great take.

If there's one domino that should fall first, it's the student-athlete one.

It's the easiest one to break away (relative to everything else) and should be the cleanest too.

cutenewt··on China asked Russia to delay war until after Olympics, Biden officials say
Probably the last time Putin is going to grant any wishes to Xi
cutenewt··on Ask HN: Books to read when you transform from SWE into SWE Management?
I second this. The Manager's Path is a terrible book.
cutenewt··on Caltech's CS interview prep course
I agree on the downsides, but I believe licensing is a good forcing function to get others to 1) gain knowledge and 2) standardize training for a base level of competence.
cutenewt··on Caltech's CS interview prep course
Do you have any insights on what kind of "integrity test" they used?
cutenewt··on 95%-ile isn't that good (2020)
There's a game that I play about an hour a day for the last decade. I wouldn't say I'm very good, but I do understand the game at a competitive level.

I just checked my stats for the game, and apparently I'm in the top 2% of all players.

So yeah, I'd agree with your hypothesis.

cutenewt··on Peloton replaces CEO and lays off 2,800 people
I don't have an indoor bike, but I'd probably save money by playing one of these cycling YouTube videos in the background: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAYaLDjmVt8
cutenewt··on Google critiqued the practice of displaying ads above search results
> When sundar took over he changed some policies within google to reduce previous commitments to a high quality internet, with the goal of increased growth.

Do you have more details for this?

cutenewt··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Microsoft also got Kotick to leave.

The cultural integration will be a lot easier than other M&A integrations; everyone at Activision is probably ready to move on from their current culture.

cutenewt··on Netflix’s Prices Are Rising Faster Than Cable
The main take I get is that there isn't enough content to support all the streaming players in the marketplace.

In the next five years, we should expecting the number of streaming players to consolidate dramatically probably to the top 3, whoever they might be.

cutenewt··on Book Review: “Viral” by Alina Chan and Matt Ridley
What's the best solution for a semi-anon scenario?

The best solution I've seen are Reddit AMAs where mods verify a semi-anon's credentials (e.g. "Mod has confirmed that ___ is an employee at the NIH.")

cutenewt··on 2021 Letter
I find the letter fascinating. I haven't followed China's economic progress closely, but one question I have that wasn't answered by the letter is:

Who shapes the CCP's ideology? It seems to be shifting all the time, Is it one person?

The clarity, conviction, speed, and alignment in which they execute the ideology is breathtaking. I can't imagine a group being able to do this over what seems to be a long period.

cutenewt··on Companies that had successful pivots
I'd agree that if you're 1) delivering the same promise to the 2) same customer base -- yes, it isn't as big of a pivot and some of the other companies on the list.
cutenewt··on We will be retiring Alexa.com
What's the best alternative for website traffic estimates?
cutenewt··on Zillow, Prophet, time series, and prices
This reminds me of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Market_for_Lemons
cutenewt··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
Speaking of tax, allowing employees to work from home may allow them to avoid the newly created Seattle payroll tax: https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/pages/tax/articles/city-of-s...
cutenewt··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
I've seen a lot of data that shows hours per week have gone up, but hours isn't necessarily productivity.
cutenewt··on One painful meeting with Steve Jobs
Jobs also gets credit for being incredibly intuitive.

Very few negotiators can reverse their positions in nanoseconds and realize the better deal is no deal at all.

cutenewt··on The Bizarre World of Scam Audiobooks
What's a typical range for PFH?
cutenewt··on The first 18 months of a startup
I always remind myself that advice givers often have a projection bias.

Reading between the lines, it seems like this founder is telling others advice he's trying to tell himself.

cutenewt··on Is content moderation a dead end?
Moderating private discussions (e.g. most Zoom calls) are very different from moderating public discussions.
cutenewt··on Is content moderation a dead end?
Newspapers, which you point out used to moderate for us, don't want to play the moderation game in the Internet era either.

Many publications have ripped out their Disqus, Facebook commenting plug-ins that used to accompany their articles.

Internet moderation is too expensive. They'd be happy having Reddit and Twitter (users) do the moderation for them.
