currency··on Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube
I have no problem with sponsored YouTube videos where the host inserts a quick ad. If it's too long I can fast forward through it.

I'm at the point though where if I want to watch a YT video I'll download it.

currency··on Verifying your identity on Twitter will require taking a selfie
Elon's doing so many things that will gut Twitter/X. When he gives up trying, what lessons will he learn?

This is my breaking point. I will not give up anonymity on this platform.

currency··on Even Synthetic Life Forms with a Tiny Genome Can Evolve
It's a discussion about motivated reasoning. Whether being happy is more important depends on your motive for what you're trying to reason out.

If you're trying to reason out how a biological system works, your emotional context seems orthogonal to achieving a useful conclusion.

currency··on “1.1.1.1 is now handling more than 1.3T requests per day”
My ISP is Verizon, so I changed my DNS settings shortly after my first typo led me to their capture site instead of my browser's page-not-found page.

"It looks like you're trying to find example.com. Here are the advertisers who paid us to talk to you about example.com" grrrr

currency··on Barred from Grocery Stores by Facial Recognition
How are people being added to the database? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? How is abuse prevented in this system? There absolutely should be an open review and appeal process.

After that: If you're homeless, you can't get groceries delivered. In a food desert you might not have alternatives.

I personally believe shoplifting is not as bad as is being portrayed recently and this a solution in search of a problem.

currency··on The Federated App Problem
I might talk about allegations and suppositions about an individual's behavior until I've seen evidence, but the hate and disinfo groups aren't imaginary.

Groups that promote hate speech and misinformation do so by invading other communities and being disruptive. Brigading and doxxing have been their tools for a long time.

Personally, I've seen that breaking up groups that promote hate speech and misinformation helps the remaining members to enjoy the community in peace.

currency··on iOS 17 makes iPhone more personal and intuitive
More worrying that they could grab a photo off FB and spoof a family member. Lots of people would ignore the number if the face and name were familiar. How many people actually memorize phone numbers any more?
currency··on Red Canary Mac Monitor
In red!
currency··on Check if your IKEA chair is compatible with your screen
I don't think it's classical high-voltage ESD reaching the monitor; it's RFI generating enough voltage to mess with the HDMI signal. Voltages generated by RFI will be relatively low compared to direct ESD.
currency··on Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg (2011)
Yess! I'm currently reading The Fuller Memorandum and it's wild finding this today.
currency··on WordPerfect for Unix character terminals
I was a computer labs staffer in the early 90s, and for a lot of students our labs were their first exposure to word processors, and man, I hated supporting WordPerfect for DOS. Students couldn't figure out how to apply formatting correctly. Trying to change something's format, they would would reveal codes and delete half of a formatting code pair. I spent so much time explaining why half their paper was now in italics or bold.

WYSIWYG works so much better for most people.

currency··on Tennis balls serve as decent bicycle tires that don’t easily puncture
Solid tires crawl around the rim as you ride them. Okay for very low speeds; not okay for cycling speeds.
currency··on Book publishers won't stop until libraries are dead
Probably depends on how you use recipes. If you prop the book up next to your work and don't want to worry about getting it messy, you'd want to buy it. If you tend to use one or two recipes per book, and copy them out and make notes and changes, you'd be happy borrowing the book for a bit.
currency··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
PNC has ads for special offers in their banking app.
currency··on Adobe now requires you to purchase a subscription to rotate PDF pages
Copy a selection of pages from an existing PDF, choose File > New from clipboard. From that point you can edit the pages in the PDF using the thumbnails sidebar and drag pages from other PDFs into the bar.
currency··on Twitter in chaos as employees accept Musk’s invitation to quit their jobs
He did do the firing whole teams bit, but not the fucking up the product bit.

I assume, for example that Apple didn't need as many finance people after the cuts, but he didn't manage to make the whole department quit in disgust.

currency··on What's the right age to get a smartphone?
This sounds so much like a GPT-3 response....
currency··on Many indoor air quality sensor products are a scam
Yeah. Amazon didn't start the answers section like this. Once Amazon started emailing random purchasers to answer questions about the item they purchased, the quality of the answers went way down.
currency··on AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues
>>The only problem I've had was ear wax buildup

I purchased a hearing aid cleaning kit[0], and the little wire loop tool is excellent at removing wax.

currency··on Orcas are breaking rudders off boats in Europe
That's plenty of time for selection pressures to modify a culture. Culture—shared knowledge—is communicated much more quickly than genetic changes.
currency··on Former judges who sent kids to jail for kickbacks must pay more than 200M
I love the presenters, but I can't listen to too many BtB episodes. They are very bleak.
currency··on Former judges who sent kids to jail for kickbacks must pay more than 200M
And I profoundly disagree that removing children from their daily lives and sending them to to punitive institutions for misdemeanor failures of judgement is good for society.

Setting an example almost always happens to marginalized individuals, while those "with a bright future ahead" escape punishment. All children deserve the chance at a bright future.

currency··on Former judges who sent kids to jail for kickbacks must pay more than 200M
From the article, one is still in jail in Kentucky, and one is at home under house arrest following release due to COVID mitigations. Nothing there about the jail security level.
currency··on Open AirPlay 2 Receiver
Yes, exactly. And that plate amp has the passthrough I mentioned, which not all plate amps do.
currency··on Open AirPlay 2 Receiver
2.1 systems generally use powered subs, not passive subs.

For use with higher-quality bookshelf speakers, you can send the stereo line level signal to a 2-channel amp and pass the high-level speaker lines through your sub. I do this with Belkin AirPlay 2 receivers and it works well.

Not all subs have high-level passthrough though.

currency··on In defence of garlic in a jar
Speaking of that chemical reaction, J. Kenji López-Alt says that if the garlic is cut or crushed in lemon juice (and I'd guess a citric acid solution would work by itself), the conversion to allicin doesn't happen. It's the basis of his tahini recipe[0].

No idea if jarred garlic bits are cut in citric acid or if it's added later to prevent botulism. I'd guess the latter based on how it tastes.

currency··on In defence of garlic in a jar
There's a fine line between preferring fresh garlic, and turning your nose up at garlic in a jar, and your preferences can be a lower priority. It's very situational.

If I'm making it myself? Fresh. If I'm at a restaurant and paying top dollar? Fresh. Fast food? Lol. At a friends' house being treated to meal? I'm not saying a word whatever they use.

Hacking systems was just something a lot of computer users did. Often interest in hacking and interest in computers were strongly related.

currency··on Ask HN: Why isn't there a standard network audio protocol?
Specifically for computers to smart speakers, I use AirPlay 1, but this works better from Windows with a 3rd-party app than from iOS or MacOS—the 3rd party app is perfectly happy to play to as many endpoints as I like, while Apple will only transmit to one endpoint at a time if it's an AirPlay 1 device.

From my Windows 10 PC, TuneBlade AirPlay streaming provides a great experience:

I can play stream anything that is playing on the PC to any AirPlay device on my LAN, and all the playback devices will be in perfect audio sync.

AirPlay 1 devices on my network include an AppleTV, Apple HomePod Minis, Nexum Airplay receivers attached to powered speakers, and DAPs with Airplay reception.

There is a significant buffer delay—about 2 seconds—that messes with video streaming. TuneBlade has the ability to stream video to VLC with synced audio, but doesn't support other video streaming endpoints. There is a bufferless mode with no delay, but it doesn't work well on my network.
