curiousdannii··on Space Invaders 404
I'm always amazed by Hakim's stuff!
curiousdannii··on Space Invaders 404
If the internet was Evangelion, there wouldn't be many humans left to page.
curiousdannii··on Fun with Prolog: Priceonomics Puzzle
My favourite part of Prolog is that if you ask it if something is in a list it will decide to add it to the list so that it can return true!
curiousdannii··on They Acquire, Acquire, Acquire While We Build, Build, Build
Yay, something that's not about the NSA!
curiousdannii··on “Warning” signs at historical sites tell visitors to relax and enjoy themselves
:/ Why does it scroll sideways?
curiousdannii··on Why haven't cash-strapped American schools embraced open source?
It's not impossible at all, you just need page styles. Could it come with more document templates? Probably. But it's not impossible in the slightest.
curiousdannii··on “Warning” signs at historical sites tell visitors to relax and enjoy themselves
Seeing the signs in context is much better than the designs by themselves.
curiousdannii··on The Facebook experiment has failed
But that obligation doesn't mean anything about what you read. Add them and ignore them if you want.
curiousdannii··on Where is all the Node.js malware?
But if a popular package's author is malicious they can add bad code, push a patch release, and most packages depending on it will install it. Pull requests are easy to check. Automatically installed patch releases aren't.
curiousdannii··on The Facebook experiment has failed
So the OP is friends with people who bore them, and that's Facebook's fault?
curiousdannii··on The declining profitability of Google Adwords
https://www.projectwonderful.com/!
curiousdannii··on “Printcrime” by Cory Doctorow
https://code.google.com/p/pybotwar/ Pybotwar is fun!
curiousdannii··on I feel like Gmail went from being Photoshop to Draw Something
I was given the option to go back to the old version..?
curiousdannii··on I feel like Gmail went from being Photoshop to Draw Something
I think we all wish Gmail was just more like Gmail. The arguably redesigned email client UX. Compare it to itself!
curiousdannii··on How eBay Worked With The FBI To Put Its Top Affiliate Marketers In Prison
"So eBay installed a tiny “gif” file on its homepage. A gif is simply an image file. This one was so tiny no one could see it. It sat there invisibly."
curiousdannii··on Things I Learned Building The Most Powerful Language Processing Engine
Linguists get descriptivism drilled into them from day one! If anyone who goes on about what is "right" I would highly doubt they were trained as a linguist.

You could perhaps instead mean "standard" instead of "right" - that they're describing a standard dialect, which doesn't meet reality. That could be true, I'm sure it is in places.

Btw, I'd be interested to know how many parts of speech the CGEL describes. Anyone got easy access?

curiousdannii··on _why's complete printer spool as one book [pdf]
It was interesting to see Inform 7 source for its own sake, rather than for what it compiles to (which in this case would be filled with non sequiturs.)
curiousdannii··on JQuery 2.0 Released
If you can find a case where 1.9 and 2.0 have different APIs, file it as a bug!
curiousdannii··on Exposed Webcam Viewer
Playing guess-the-country on random is fun!
curiousdannii··on AT&T Announces Intent to Build 1 Gigabit Fiber Network in Austin
They're outside my house right now!
curiousdannii··on JavaScript Scope Context Coloring
It doesn't seem to handle comments correctly. I need to delete all mine to make it work.
curiousdannii··on Asm.js: The JavaScript Compile Target
Type safety basically. JITs can produce good code which performs very well, but it still must check that the data it has is of the type it expects. A good JIT may only check occasionally, but it still must check. asm.js can guarantee that its data's types cannot change through static analysis.
curiousdannii··on This Professor only has a PhD degree
PhD by Publication isn't uncommon. I know a number of people who have worked as researchers in NGOs. After a decade of that it can take just a few months to tidy up the work you have already done, submit it to a university, and be awarded the qualification.
curiousdannii··on The language of Vim
Touch typing is a great skill to have of course, as is using keyboard shortcuts. But I can get by with standardised shortcuts, and I'd prefer not learning a new set of shortcuts used by a single program, especially when that program has a modal interface. Maybe modal keyboard interfaces are used by more than vi, but I don't know of any other programs that have one.
curiousdannii··on The language of Vim
Surely if you need to pack reformating, moving, copying and deleting code into as short a time as possible you're doing it wrong even more than if you had to insert a lot of text!

This leaves navigating as the main reason for vi's UI. And macros, apparently. If that's what you want, great, but it's not for me.

curiousdannii··on The language of Vim
I've never understood the appeal of vi(m). Programming is a thoughtful, creative, deliberate process. I'm never in a situation where I've got so much to type that my productivity would drop if my fingers stopped touching the keys. Rather the opposite in fact.
curiousdannii··on The Fireplace Delusion
Of course, it's an assumption which isn't universal, and probably not even valid for a majority of religious people.
curiousdannii··on Teach kids to farm, not code.
Subsistence farmers in developing countries often have quite happy lives. I've lived in PNG, and the biggest thing they lack is health care, but that's getting better all the time.

Farmers in developed western countries probably have it worse. Supermarkets have driven prices down to ridiculous levels, so the profit of, for example, dairy farmers is very low. There are reasons the suicide rates in rural areas is high.

curiousdannii··on I Can Detect Your Facebook Username, Using W3C Standard
I don't try to prevent Facebook from figuring out who I am or what I do. They should have a huge amount of info about me, but their ads are still entirely irrelevant.
curiousdannii··on HTML5 localStorage allows sites to fill up users' hard disks
The Chromium developers really dislike localStorage (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=58985#c7)

They'll have to fix this bug, but I won't be surprised if they try to remove localStorage entirely soon.
