curiousdannii··on Twine is an open-source tool for telling interactive, nonlinear stories
Various levels of NLP do get applied in IF, but it doesn't necessarily help much. Being able to parse input is an important step, but the game/story needs to be able to do something with those verbs and nouns. For a good player experience the author needs to communicate clearly what range of input will be acceptable, making sure all nouns mentioned in text can be interacted, any actions implied in the text or by the nouns themselves are recognised, etc. If you do that well then you can have a good player experience with a purely handcoded parser.
curiousdannii··on Dear Stack Exchange, Inc.
Aside from a few of the biggest Stack Exchange sites (including Stack Overflow) most of the 170 sites don't have ads and don't make profit. The only profit is very indirect, demonstrating that Stack Overflow the company can run sites like these, something which is now in doubt. (Disclosure: I'm a mod on one of the small SE sites and helped author the letter.)
curiousdannii··on You can now run WebAssembly on Cloudflare Workers
What about Module.instantiateWasm()? That should let you provide a pre-compiled or even pre-instantiated module.
curiousdannii··on 25 years ago I hoped we would extend Emacs to do WYSIWG word processing
It denies freedom to the software more than freedom to the person. For copyleft licences the software is most important; for permissive licences people are most important.
curiousdannii··on Google's Decline Really Bugs Me
And their open source projects like Chrome do have public bug trackers, but in my experience I've either been ignored or treated with what I felt was contempt. The first is probably the same feedback problem as everywhere, the second is because the Chrome developers don't want the same kind of internet I do...
curiousdannii··on Dogescript
A word cloud of all words in all doge images. Wow.
curiousdannii··on Dogescript
This is some actual code from one of my projects (though written by another contributor):

To transition to monster card gallery:
   	animate the gallery-transition as a reel animation targeting the transition-container at 8 fps;
   	wait for main menu input until all animations are complete;
   	pause for 1000 milliseconds, accepting input;
now the image-ID of the transition-container is the image-ID of the card-container.
The language is Inform 7, and it's using the Glimmr library. https://github.com/i7/kerkerkruip http://inform7.com/ http://glimmr.wordpress.com/
curiousdannii··on Are You A Typing Hacker? Prove It
That moment when you realise you actually don't so much touch type as four-finger type. :/
curiousdannii··on Run Windows 1.01 in your browser
For fewer layers (and faster playing) you can use Parchment: http://iplayif.com/?story=http://www.batmantis.com/zorks/zor...

Though the status line doesn't work... I should fix that.

And if you like Zork, try these modern classics:

Lost pig: http://iplayif.com/?story=http://mirror.ifarchive.org/if-arc...

Spider and Web: http://iplayif.com/?story=http://mirror.ifarchive.org/if-arc...

curiousdannii··on What happens when a language has no numbers?
"How many children/pigs/dogs are in the house? Did we forget any?"
curiousdannii··on The core Internet institutions abandon the US Government
What differences will this make now?
curiousdannii··on Mozilla bug 923590: Pledge never to implement HTML5 DRM
But unlike most other media there's no other way to purchase them. I can't buy DVDs of Kindle active content, I can't get it off ebay.

I guess they mustn't consider the international market worth the trouble of solving whatever legal issue is stopping them from selling them to other countries.

curiousdannii··on Mozilla bug 923590: Pledge never to implement HTML5 DRM
So the Disney Vault is an actual physical vault with human security guards? Wow! I thought it was just a scheme for introducing artificial scarcity.
curiousdannii··on Mozilla bug 923590: Pledge never to implement HTML5 DRM
Or any active content! Why would Amazon sell apps in only North America?!
curiousdannii··on Fingerprints are Usernames, not Passwords
The best thing in this article is the list of things-that-turned-out-to-be-bad-ideas!
curiousdannii··on Fingerprints are Usernames, not Passwords
Because otherwise everyone using "password" as their password would have to share an account!
curiousdannii··on Why Free Software Is More Important Now Than Ever Before
I would say that the GPL is instead primarily concerned with the freedom of the software, not the authors or users. GPL software can never be taken hostage, even if that inconveniences every human who might want to use it. It's appropriate for some things, but not for everything.
curiousdannii··on We Built It, And They Didn't Come
Which commercial?
curiousdannii··on We Built It, And They Didn't Come
"Ideating"? Really? Yes I know it's not a new word, but really?
curiousdannii··on Star Wars opening crawl from 1977 in HTML/CSS/JS
True, but more people are likely to think of the subtitle as being canonical due to repeated watchings on VHS or DVD than theatre reruns.
curiousdannii··on Star Wars opening crawl from 1977 in HTML/CSS/JS
No, not the remastered version! Nooooooo!
curiousdannii··on Anxiety over the new Gmail Compose
And I opted out. I believe that it was only recently enforced on everyone.
curiousdannii··on HelloRun - A WebGL 3D Game
Try using arrow keys, it does exactly that.
curiousdannii··on A flexible E Ink screen that could be in the 2014 Kindle
After using both a Kindle Keyboard and a Kindle Touch, I much prefer the touch screen. I wouldn't mind having page turning buttons though.

Switching orientation to landscape makes most of my PDFs readable, at the cost of scrolling three times per page. It's not fun, but if necessary you can put up with it.

curiousdannii··on A flexible E Ink screen that could be in the 2014 Kindle
Hmm. My screen's been on for 2h 22m out of 2d 10h 22m (about 4%) and it's used 3% of the consumed battery. 49% of the consumption is cell standby, 47% is phone idle.

YMMV of course, but 70% screen consumption seems way high to me.

curiousdannii··on Make No Promises
Author's shouldn't assume that every reader can identify every language by sight! Thanks HN commenters for identifying core.async as a Clojure library.
curiousdannii··on The True Size of Africa - Misleading Maps
A spherical globe still counts as a projection of our non-spherical planet!
curiousdannii··on Massachusetts Introduces Software Service Tax
In Australia it's 10% with no tips. Wages are considerably higher (so is cost of living however.)
curiousdannii··on Massachusetts Introduces Software Service Tax
Why do all the American states have different taxes?

Here in Australia we have 10% GST (Goods and services tax). So wherever you're from in the country you can expect both goods and services to be priced the same. So much simpler for the average consumer!
