ChatGPT? Seriously though, this is such a weird reply and doesn't fit at all with the account's previous comments. Also has that kind of not-quote-right feel that a lot of ai generated content has
cubicle67··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
Yeah, nah, no way this can be taken at face value. If you've never flown before, this would be apparent to your instructor before you'd even got in the plane.

I haven't flown for a while, but three things jump immediately to mind - The absence of your log book - Not knowing how to do a walk around inspection (yeah, I'm calling bs on that too) - Banter with the instructor

cubicle67··on Ask HN: I've been asked if I'd like to give up my GitHub name
How? It's only two letters, so it would be like YCombinator making a trademark claim on yc

I agree on not asking for money directly though

cubicle67··on Ask HN: I've been asked if I'd like to give up my GitHub name
no, it's nothing clever, just my initials. Also happens to be the same as the initials of the company in question
cubicle67··on A Watch Guy's Thoughts on the Apple Watch After Seeing It in the Metal
You might want to define "flop" and specify a timeframe if you're offering a bet like this

Some suggestions:

* will sell less than x units in the y months after it becomes available

* is discontinued within y months

* will not make it to version n

* will bring in less than $x revenue/profit in [timeframe]

* will lose its link at the top of the apple website within y months

It's also hard to tell what Apple's internal expectations are. They may expect to only sell 100, or they may be expecting to sell 100 million. My guess is it's a "feeler" product to guage demand while they work on v2

which I thought was odd when I read the arstechnica article and saw the chart which showed the beast at ~59,000kg, or 59 tons, but then I remembered that our tons (tonnes) are 1000kg and the US ones are about 907kg
cubicle67··on A Mother’s Journey Through the Unnerving Universe of ‘Unboxing’ Videos
I think my kids are having the same problem (boredom) as you did.

What do you mean by "paying attention"? One of the thinks I really like about Montessori, and I'm guessing each school is different, is that the children are able to develop long attention spans and learn to stay focused on something for as long as they like; half a day is not uncommon, and an entire day is possible. Normal school allows children just long enough to become absorbed in something, then interrupts them with "change class!". Montessori allows that child so keep focused on their activity (drawing a map, writing a story, maths, etc) for as long as they want.

The up-side is that I've found Montessori to be a very efficient means of learning. My kids have no homework and an enjoyable relaxing day, but they're far ahead of their friends in normal schools.

Down-side is, like you say, low tollerence for droning teachers and being bored

cubicle67··on A Mother’s Journey Through the Unnerving Universe of ‘Unboxing’ Videos
If you're considering Montessori, there's a few things I need to warn you of (I speak as a parent who's put 4 children through)

1. You'll never look at normal schooling the same way again. You'll find the thought of sending your kinds to a traditional school depressing and wonder how anyone can think it's a good idea

2. Every parent/teacher you who finds out you send your kids to a non-traditional school, and who hasn't experience of them, will find the need to defend traditional schooling

3. Unless you're lucky enough to have access to a Montessori high school, or you're able to homeschool, you'll have to face the day when you send your kids back into a normal school.

cubicle67··on Ask HN: Advice for dealing with a client and bad SEO advice
Thanks heaps for this. I think one of the problems is that they expect when they hire an expensive "expert" they then trust that expert's advice, same as they would advice from a lawyer or accountant. Me coming along and saying "No! don't do that" comes off to them the same as if I complained about advice from their accountant.

The above links are good and I'll read them when I get a break and apss them along. As for the hiding elements, I just plain said I wouldn't do it, but the rest I've less grounds on which to object. In short, I want them to do what's best for them

cubicle67··on Ask HN: Advice for dealing with a client and bad SEO advice
Yes, this is what I thought, but how do I say this to a client and get them to listen?

cubicle67··on iPad Air Review
I'd love to be able to expand my wifes iPad, but I think Apple don't offer it (the ability to expand the capacity) for two reasons, the first of which is price - the retail difference between 16Gb and 128Gb is almost pure profit.

The second resaon though, is that it introduces a level of complexity Apple are unlikely to be comfortable with[1]. Users now have to be aware of where stuff is being saved (flash or sd card), and the OS UI needs to be updated to provide this option.

[1] unfortunately, iCloud seems to wildly disprove my point ...

cubicle67··on The Surface 2
Is it really 2013 and I am pretty much scraping away at dead trees with a piece of metal dipped in ink like a caveman!?

I'm the opposite. I love tech but I have an a4 sized sketchpad and a good pencil I take everywhere with me. I use it for everything from meeting notes to drawings/ideas. I'll use it to demonstrate ideas/concepts to a client or just to hlep me work out something (I'm very visual)

I can't see myself ever parting with it. I love the feel - there's something about using real pencil and paper digital can never replace, and I have a draw full of old notbooks I can look back through which is kind of nice.

As far as search/organisation etc well... a notepad's not so good for that but my drawings tend to be write-only. I use them as a tool to help me think and to clarify ideas.

I deleted my LinkedIn account some time back, but I still get email like this (copy from actual email, not paraphrased)

Subject: Invitation to connect on LinkedIn

[Me],

I'd like to include you in my network to share updates and stay in touch.

All emails sent from friend's email account, not LinkedIn. I've confirmed with friend that they were completely unaware of this and were quite embarrassed.

Not cool, LinkedIn, and most definitely dishonest.

cubicle67··on Don't use CoffeeScript
Thanks!

Yes, it's a bit hard to see but I haven't really spent any time tuning it - been too busy. Did you nitice the little blue ships that you can shoot to get a token to upgrade your guns? There's red ships that follow you that show up every 30 seconds, and blue ones that contain powerups that show up after (I think) 10k points.

cubicle67··on Don't use CoffeeScript
Yes, I was trying to reward the player for flying faster instead of just sitting on one spot. Projectile speed increases as your speed increases. I though damaging your own ship would just be cruel :)

You may also notice the view zooms out as your speed increases, so you have a much wider view

cubicle67··on Don't use CoffeeScript
fwiw, I love coffeescript. I write a game a few weeks ago in it, but I've never shown it to anyone before. Have a look here if you're interested http://quietcode.com/vectroid

I've made no attempts at all at performance tuning yet it runs very nicely in webkit browsers and not too bad in firefox.

cubicle67··on Microsoft's Surface sales figures are in, and they're hideous
Macs are cool but when you want to get real work done you use Windows

Speaking as a Mac user (who considers what he does to be real work), I think it would be more cutting to play on the games aspect of Windows. That really is the One Thing™ Windows has over other OSs

cubicle67··on Honest In-App Purchases
These aren't the sort of in-app purchases that are the problem. I've happily purchased each expansion pack in Galaxy on Fire 2 and similar for loads of games. I don't see a problem with this, or for having to pay to unlock the full version

What I do have a problem with, and have refused to spend a single cent on, are anything going by the name of "coins", "gems", "gold" etc. These are the disease the app store needs a way to remove

cubicle67··on Honest In-App Purchases
Your assumptions here are - #1 the user won't download an alternate game, and #2 the user won't spend their money elsewhere in the app store
