ctkhn··on Best LLM for every budget, updated daily
On my 64gb m3 max qwen3.8 27b has been great for planning and then letting qwen3.6 35ba3b actually implement the planned changes.
ctkhn··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I wonder if that was really a 0-day or an intentional backdoor?
ctkhn··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I paid around that for a 5x10 unit in a medium sized midwestern city for a year during covid when I worked fully remote and moved back to my parents' house for a year.
ctkhn··on Show HN: How Stale Is Your AI? Release age and training cutoff for 20 models
Gotcha, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you
ctkhn··on Show HN: How Stale Is Your AI? Release age and training cutoff for 20 models
For general purpose use this is interesting, but if I'm just using an LLM for coding, does this matter at all? I would hope something like a new java version after a model's publish date can be handled and understood by the model through tool calls and context even if it's not explicitly in the training data, the same way the LLM doesn't have my existing code or the plan to change it baked in from training.
ctkhn··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
If someone launched a nuke in space how would other nuclear powers react? I doubt they would assume "this is probably just an EMP and not a direct nuclear strike on our territory"
ctkhn··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Not really relevant for public service announcements like gp is talking about. I just want a live feed of my local services updates. I get weather alerts from my city and county over text (contracted by the government through a third party platform), I would take them as a dedicated app or rss feed or anything. I'm not connecting to my friends or family through a weather alert or train delay notice
ctkhn··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
The problem here is you need a trustworthy government for nationalizing to make a difference. The current US admin started with DOGE and a crypto rug pull.
ctkhn··on Making Startups Powerful
Waterfall means designing and building everything before rolling it out to users. Researching a problem before you start tackling it is just general good advice. You can be more effective while moving fast and breaking things while still taking some time to know where to move and what is ok vs not ok to break.
ctkhn··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
It's crazy it is resold but we don't even get it for our own use. Budgeting with credit card statements would instantly become so much more useful with less effort.
ctkhn··on One woman's Tesla was remotely controlled by an abusive ex-partner
I don't think it's JUST Teslas, any car with its own cellular link is a total non starter for me after that Jeep article 10ish years ago. Give me a key fob, carplay for my music and maps, and that's all the smarts I need. Keep the heated seats.
ctkhn··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Even Shingy called chatgpt "chat" when he went on Ed Zitron's show. It was very weird to hear from a guy who has been around tech world for such a long time even if he's non technical.
ctkhn··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Been wishing my company was doing this. We are locked in with chatgpt for chat and claude for coding. I have a 36gb m4 max laptop but I'm not allowed to run anything on it even though it would be totally free. Absolute pain.
ctkhn··on One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime
This is ridiculous. These guys need a body cam and GPS on them even for desk work.
ctkhn··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
Siri has a chatgpt link currently and is being connected to Gemini next month. What is the value of an extra piece of hardware on top of that?
ctkhn··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
I'm sorry but that is just not correct. Androids and iPhones both have a way to start chats with their ai assistant from a hardware button or even always-on listening. My airpods, sony, and even my cheapest amazon bluetooth headphones all have a button to tap or hold that allows ai voice conversation to start. Even my Sonos and not very smart JBL speakers for beach days have the option to start an ai voice conversation and most home-based smart speakers include a listen word that doesn't even require a button.
ctkhn··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
This seems like a more expensive version of the rabbit or friend ai pins. What is going to differentiate this above any of (1) my phone that can use any AI provider and I can already carry around the home, (2) a set of smart speakers that can talk to an AI provider like google home/homepod/alexa, or (3) my computer?
ctkhn··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Some of them are right next to housing. Huntington beach has wells adjoining homes near the beach. Look up the prices of the houses if you want to really go crazy
ctkhn··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
Does your garmin watch not charge? If you call them and are nice they'll probably give you a heavily discounted replacement. Mine died on me randomly and they gave me a new 900 series forerunner for $125
ctkhn··on The development pipeline is a production system
I worked at a startup that was briefly a unicorn and ended up burning cash because they did exactly what you said of focusing a lot on tooling and dev environment. It was great but way over the top for what we needed. I learned a lot of good practices for myself but they've been limping along for a while and most of my former team was laid off or saw what was coming and left before it hit them.
ctkhn··on The development pipeline is a production system
I think our QAs do pay attention a bit more than that, but some of the things they do flag as issues show (to me) that they don't pay a lot of attention until after we've merged and released or we'd get some of their bugs as requirements on tickets instead of as bugs to resolve between QA deploy and before we go to prod.
ctkhn··on The development pipeline is a production system
I'm in legacy/finance right now and we have a QA team that we share with maybe 2 or 3 other dev teams. I think our integration testing systems could be a lot more efficient but I think if we had a proper pipeline that truly guaranteed integration testing (right now it feels like a shrug) we would lose the QA team like you did.
ctkhn··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good, especially if you ask right questions
The average index fund may not even be the best idea anymore - look at how most of the index providers except S&P caved on including an enormous but barely-tested IPO that has now dropped almost 20% since it launched barely 45 days ago.
ctkhn··on NYC Apartment Aquaponics
It's very fun as a process and it's cool to be surrounded by things you made. We're so disconnected with where things come from (food, clothes, etc) that for me and people I know it's interesting to be involved and see how the process goes even to produce a token amount of whatever it is. I grow my own herbs and cherry tomatoes in homemade cedar planter boxes, sewed my own kindle cover, am sewing replacement covers for my very old patio furniture cushions that I got used, my fiancee knit me some socks and has made sweaters for herself and a few family members, another of our friends sewed an outfit for herself, etc and it really is just fun to do. It also is nice to be a little more self sufficient, not just in a prepper way, but in the sense of not having to get ripped off by some corporation or feeling bad having to buy something new (ie replacing my cushion covers myself instead of buying fully new cushions)
ctkhn··on The Zen of Parallel Programming
I wonder how much a good process of meetings, tickets or whatever sort of documents etc for handling new ideas and features would speed this up or bring it back to linear. I've been in some orgs where good organization at the level above me can make the required communication between me and other dev teams lower and let us live in "good" silos
ctkhn··on The state of open source AI
There are corporations like Blackwater and CoreCivic that subcontract both of these for the US government today or Wagner (RIP) in Russia. The pinkertons and the US state have also both taken on the role of corporate muscle in the past when workers went on strike
ctkhn··on The state of open source AI
Source: I imagined it
ctkhn··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
I never got into the podcasts side but it was good for synthesizing multiple documents in a way chatgpt or google's ai overview couldn't, but now I will just dump a couple PDFs into a new chat in Ollama and then ask it questions about the content. Is there another killer app for notebookLM out there?
ctkhn··on After wearing the Pebble Time 2 for two weeks, I'll never buy another smartwatch
Yeah I love my forerunner 945. Got it used in 2020 and when it died in 2023 Garmin replaced it for $150 including tax and shipping. Couple friends have got the new fancier touchscreen models but I like the simplicity of my watch. I blocked most texts from coming through as a buzz except immediate family or 2FA but it would be nice if Apple's focus modes worked better with it automatically. Been wondering if Pebble would be a good move to get even further away from proprietary software though as someone who runs or hits the gym monday through saturday
ctkhn··on The LLM Critics Are Right. I Use LLMs Anyway
Coming from legacy enterprise I am using claude to do exactly this for some of my team's more bizarre and poorly documented "inventions" that started out as their pet project and then became part of our official workflow.
