Because time is precious and the time saving risk is worth it.
ctack··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
I’m guessing the vox office featured door has that bar because a flat metal plate wouldn’t seem right applied to glass? Going without the plate the glass would get dirty.
ctack··on AMP Has Irreparably Damaged Publishers’ Trust in Google-Led Initiatives
If they’re paying more per impression how is that shooting themselves in the foot?

You would be hanged in some countries.
ctack··on Study Warns Android Phones from Samsung, Xiaomi and Others Are Spying on Users
There was that post a few days ago about Apples massive profit margins in the mobile phone space, which just seems to reinforce what this study is saying. Am watching the Pinephone space with massive hope for the future, though there is not much there for the present moment.

ctack··on Ask HN: Any tips on overcoming fear of heights?
For me it’s a mind game. I remind myself that I trust the gear and I trust myself to be responsible using it. The gear can be a ladder or a harness or a structure. If don’t actually trust the gear then I’d like to think that I have will to refuse no matter if there is peer pressure.

ctack··on Ask HN: Tinder is full of fake profiles, posted by Tinder. How to prove?
I like the premise. I got this impression from the 10 minutes spent skimming the results from my rural area. Some of them just t looked so fake. But maybe setting up the handsome Stan account and testing is the way to go.
ctack··on Russia ‘Weaponizing’ AI: Pentagon Intelligence Report
I can see politicians pushing all high quality faked videos as the real thing (without caring about origin) to bash their opponents. Fake evidence of crimes etc. Some societies are going to have a really hard time with this. The phishing angle should it come to pass would be solved with new systems of trust though it might be devastating at first. The fake generated websites feels like the current state of the internet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ctack··on Valve Steam Deck
The little bit if gaming I’ve ever managed to do has mostly involved their games and then later their platform. I really couldn’t agree more.
ctack··on Britain to ban all new diesel and petrol heavy goods vehicles from 2040
2040 is so far off it’s as if they just punting the ball down the line for the next generation to deal with. Why not 2050 or 2200?

ctack··on Twitter 'troll' to pay six-figure sum
It seems like the agreement to pay could be read as the money being more or less extorted from the twitter troll.

My creepy little brother.
ctack··on No Space Left to Run: China's Transnational Repression of Uyghurs
Isn’t that what progress is all about though? We are maturing as a society, or are at least trying to.
ctack··on Time for South Africa to take a fresh look at the DRC
Author is something of a visionary with a proven track record of implementation. This is a fresh take on the ‘growing the economy’ dilema these countries face.
ctack··on A police dog who cried drugs at every traffic stop
They can afford to perceive the system as a sham.

I might understand that it’s a sham, but I’d be miserable and powerless to push against it. So it’s a pointless belief to have.

But after that, it becomes a bit chicken and egg: Is it a sham only because you have power to make it a sham or was it a sham all along?
