crypticlizard··on Older Americans who live in RVs and drive from one low-wage job to another
This seems like an extension of the sharing economy where people expect less and less from a job.
crypticlizard··on Show HN: Real-time arbitrage opportunities across cryptocurrency exchanges
same, not working, can you get this up? nifty idea
crypticlizard··on The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons and Dragons
Still waiting for that resurrection. Hard getting friends to devote the time, and playing online is meh.
crypticlizard··on Like Ant Cant Perceive Human, Are Human Incapable of Perceiving Superior Beings?
Indeed, humans may just be the bootloader.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Late twenties, last four years spent fiddling w/projects. Employability?
Maybe obvious, but so much seems to be a confluence of factors beyond your control and ones within your control. Luck plus making the right connection at the right time would help. Also doing well in an interview is a no brainer. Could you make another indie app & gross more money and live cheaply? Bosses kinda suck imo (but maybe might be cool sometimes for a while) so running my own show is always an appealing possibility.
crypticlizard··on Teachable Machine: Teach a machine using your camera, live in the browser
The value-add for this demo is amazing, it's going to be many people's first approachable experience of ml, or things just like this will be. I expect a lot more of this stuff to appear in UI/UX. It's fun, intuitive, and a game changer away from dumb screens to fully interactive machines with their own knowledge graph.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend my time as a 17-year-old who can code?
What you got going for you right now is assets and momentum. You got a place to live, you got a brain that still works, and if you play your cards right, you'll be living phat. So what you want to do, travel to Alpha Centauri? Or make a million dollars? Or invent machine based intelligence? Or fall in love and have kids and have a normal life? Or dream about the day that machines take over and humans are obsolete? Or try to invent a way to contact aliens? I'm just trying to point out that you can do the mundane and banal things that everybody can relate to, or you can do things that seem astronomically impossible. It's your life, it's up to you and your limited cranium size and capacity. You can chase fairy tales or dollar bills. I don't recommend both. The truth, life is really ducking short and your gonna make mistakes. Pretty soon you'll be thirty and you've already made ninety percent of your life choices, and then you're just steering the ship. Right now you're just trying to leave port and pick a good direction to sail. Don't forget what you are: limited. You gotta pick.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: What's the next big advance in AI you're looking forward to most?
Personally I'd love to talk to a bot that's mastered and memorized many books and all of philosophy and science and is also researching philosophy. Imagine getting his/her/their opinion on all the subtle questions life throws at you.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: You have $1BN, how do you disrupt Facebook?
I would copy the Wikipedia model as much as possible. Wikipedia doesn't generate nearly as much data but there must be some way to empower the users with it rather than "stealing" it for your own financial gain. We complain a lot about Facebook for good reason, what I'd like to see is a more responsible platform and I think Wikipedia got a lot of that right.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: What is your mission in life?
To make self-driving cars at thing as soon as possible. Right now a lot of companies from what I understand really need to be able to get enough data accumulated so there's openings I think to be able to drive for them and collect data on a laptop, that sounds like the coolest thing ever to me...
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel overpaid?
Anyone here be willing to help me get there? I'm stuck in another job until I figure out how to be doing bug fixes for ninety too. I like coding, & I live in the Bay area. Msg me maybe? u/racketship on Reddit. :Facepalm
crypticlizard··on Where will artificial general intelligence come from?
With regards to Vulcan emergence, I do believe we are in for that soonish; it's an archetypal depiction that consumers desire. Biotech, my friend, genetic enhancement. We can make ourselves smarter with genetic enhancement. We can even give ourselves the vulcan mind meld, and everything else exceptional about Spock. I do think the human brain substrate is exceptional, worthy of improving upon. I wish we talked more about so called "brainpower extension technologies", hopefully one day. I bet cats talk in ten years, it's only logical, consumers love cats & the companies can sell them by the millions.
crypticlizard··on California ballot measure to decriminalize adult use of hallucinogenic mushrooms
Well Terence would've loved this! Anyway... Besides his stoned ape theory he might've mentioned little green elves and perhaps twenty or thirty hours of other things, all of it erudite, fractalizing, novel, and utterly fascinating. Be a lot more Terence in the world if this passed, leading mushie workshops, spinning mind-blowing yarns, experimenting with consciousness...
crypticlizard··on Dancing can reverse the signs of aging in the brain
You know how there's the runners high? Well free form dancing, ecstatic dance, dance church, festival dancing, you get really high. It's like meditation, insights come unbidden, you get unbounded outlook. It's a great way to sort yourself out, feel really great about being alive, and rediscover your inner spirituality. Honestly, for $10-$15/dance you'll get really high, if you let yourself go and get into the flow state. Try going to the morning ones, don't eat & drink only water, do some stretching at the beginning. Yes the whole thing seems super silly from the outside, a bunch of hippie folks gyrating to music, but man oh man it's profound if you get into the vibe(and if the vibes are high quality, like so called dance churches can be, and you know cause everyone else there are fellow psychonauts riding the bodies internal DMT highway). The great thing about the brain getting high w/o drugs? It's probably fabulously healthy for it. Think about it, super powerful brain drugs come out in a show of force and give you uplifted profound feelings. That sure seems like just the ticket to health, comparable to taking the mental garbage out.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: If you were better at programming, what program would you write?
Well I'd argue being better night make all the difference. If the set of possible programs includes ones extremely difficult to program, then are those programs possible to program given an ordinary developer and sufficient time? Definitely not imo. Some things only a genius programmer could do. That programmer could come along and invent a way to do ai using today's commodity hardware. Without that ingeniousness it's doubtful more time would do the same for ordinary developers. Do I believe I could do it given enough time? No. Could some genius somewhere today? Maybe.i wouldn't rule it out, in fact I'm fascinated by it.
crypticlizard··on Apple Scales Back Its Ambitions for a Self-Driving Car
Imo modern cars are basically small computers and everything else(seats, doors, wheels)is peripheral. I mean it is 2017 after all, don't you think it's about time we accept that cars are computers? Sure, we used to need humans to "complete" the computer part, seeing as we didn't have motherboards at first. But now computer is the core part of car and even humans aren't necessary. Why even bring your cell phone when your car is a cell phone? It's possible Apple needs the car to compete in a post cell phone world.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: If you were better at programming, what program would you write?
Intelligent answers are hard to come by, that's why I too would write a a program capable of Spock like question answering facility.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Where does one find true entry level development jobs?
It's not malice, it's business and legal acumen.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Seriously, How Can We Begin to Make AI Safe?
What are you waiting for to convince you that now it's time to take this seriously?
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: What is your advice to new HN user?
A bucket list type answer:

Don't just sit on the front page. Check out new, comment on someone's new submit. Or try digging up your favorite articles for others to check out. Maybe you'll hit the lotto(front page). Read some Ask:HN. Research something you'd normally use google for using the site search functionality. Try to build up your points to be able to get down vote functionality. Make two accounts and have an alter ego. Try using a throw away. Get into a conversation and consistently check on it/grow it so that you really feel like you're talking to others on here. Quit just lurking. Make some friends and try upvoting each others stuff(not recommended). See if you can find out the real identity of a random poster. Read someone's comment history. Find ways to make your passions relevant and post it! And of course be smart as hell so OP wants to hire you and you end up making six figures cause you cracked HN instead of noobing out on the front page forever...

In other words, HN is ridiculously dope, so discover for yourself how many ways to use it. my 2c.

crypticlizard··on Ask HN: How does HN earn money to keep going?
If it was free anyone could post ads looking to hire. It's exclusive advertising to a high value potential customer.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: How does HN earn money to keep going?
There are advertisements placed on the front page by yc companies looking to hire.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: How to be an activist for a more open government?
Hard question because activism commonly isn't straightforwardly legal. Legal activism kinda doesn't work because corruption is invested in the status quo and has the power to suppress rogue actors. But there's lots of technology companies you could build that could defeat corruption by making a technology that makes corruption infeasible. It's a circuitous route to activism though, and it doesn't feel as powerful or immediate as traditional activism. And you're likely to be subverted by the corruption, else losing your business or being branded a criminal. Illegal activism isn't much better though. Snowden & Aaron Swartz were modern activists that told truth to power and got hammered.

There's a reason your country has sustained corruption that has global implications. Do you know what foreign influences the corruption serves? A good way to tell might be finding out what corporations are invested in your countrieseconomy. Then as an activist you can target that corporation in your search to expose the truth of who funds and perpetuates the corruption.

crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Why am I so unhappy in spite of material success?
Imo happiness comes from our beliefs. Beliefs add up to become perspective. Once perspective aligns we garner from it our personal truths. As humans get older we tend to stabilize perspective and truth changes less. This is why suggestions to resolve inner turmoil commonly focus on stabilizing ones belief structure: it makes truths more reliably convincing. Humans find it deeply satisfying to know the truth. Unfortunately, universal truth is elusive and not likely provable so instead the pyramid paradigm we live in says: convince yourself of whatever truth conveniences you the most, and we'll sell you the means to believe it.

Something has put you near the top of the power pyramid for its own reasons. And the whole of global consumerism is here to service your happiness. Consider all that went into the wealth and influence you have as a rich person. Everywhere you go you can buy approximations of happiness, but your beliefs are preventing that from happening. You worked to get your job that provides your high status. Now you have the right to that level of buying power but your beliefs are holding you back from being a successful consumer at your place in the pyramid scheme.

crypticlizard··on The future of deep learning
Are there popular modern libraries that do program synthesis? Although I've thought about this and read about the concept on hn, I've not heard it mentioned seriously or frequently or strenuously as a thing to do either just for fun or to get a job doing it. This could be a popular way to solve programming problems without needing programmers. I think this truly would kick off AI as a very personal experience for the masses because they would use AI basically like they do already do now with a search engine. People would use a virtual editor to design their software using off the shelf parts freely available. The level of program complexity could really skyrocket as people now have more control over what and how they run programs because they can easily design it themselves. Everyone could design their own personal Facebook or Twitter and probably a whole new series of websites too complex or for other reasons not invented yet.

For instance, you want to program the personality of a toy, so you search around using the AI search engine for parts that might work. Or you want a relationship advice coach so you put it together using personalities you like, taking only the parts you want from each personality. Or another example would be just to make remixes of media you like. Because everything works without programming anyone can participate.

crypticlizard··on Ask HN: What will coding be like in 25 years?
Yes and also totally hilarious as in like in my day we had to walk uphill both ways. Jeez you guys had to actually program? That must've sucked, Grandpa. No vr you can just point at and say/think what you want? (Like when Grandpa was a kid and his dad didn't have a computer)
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: In the next 5 years which markets will grow the most and why?
Timescales are hard but...Ai will do mostly all of it and humans are being factored out. Humans will need not apply for real work, fake work could proliferate. Automation vertically integrated into robotic systems will prevail in mostly all sectors... Embodied AGI will autonomously operate under duress, capable of or superior to humans at warfare. This is already normal today to a lesser extent, but not publicly claimed by anyone. I believe this is so because a soldier never reveals his position. Superior Industries could be: computer hacking using AI, computers being used in new ways on a mass scale, super computer quantum computing, nanotechnology, organ replacement, DNA therapies, automated field doctors, 3d PTSD therapy machines, data thievery & recovery using AI. AI will cause crime sprees as new exploits using AI trump non-AI systems. Also, People plugging their brains into computers makes sense bc then we achieve intelligence upgrades.3d printers that print anything fast. Lifelong AI Buddies/monitors. Nostalgia Industries as old people feel really out of touch with the modern world. Propaganda and fake news bc they will be more effectively convincing bc AI. As AI really starts to prove itself superior People will question everything. Maybe we will want to colonize Mars bc it will make humans feel not obsolete. Who knows.
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
Dune
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: Have you played emoji movies the game in Google assistant?
I could use this as the killer movie picking app with friends
crypticlizard··on Ask HN: What's your dream as a programmer?
An interest in possibilities. What if I apply myself to a data set that reveals fundamental truths about the universe? Or how to communicate with extraterrestrials? Or reveals fundamental truths about Earth?
