cruano··on Walmart, CVS face trial for homeopathic products next to real meds
> are usually distinct in packaging and form.

That's the key point. It's deceptive (and should probably be illegal) to make a product look like medicine. It doesn't matter where you place it, if you put a banana on the side of the aspirins no one is going to complain it didn't cure their headache.

cruano··on Red Dead Redemption 2 fan with 6k hours on Stadia begs for character transfer
There's a very big difference between gaming for 4 hours a day and spending the same amount of time in a single game. Watching ALL episodes of Friends takes 88 hours, you'd certainly call a person crazy if they watched Friends +60 times in a 4 year period.

And let's not pretend like WoW is normal or particularly well accepted.

cruano··on Red Dead Redemption 2 fan with 6k hours on Stadia begs for character transfer
Yeah but isn't that a single player game ? Even if it had 100+ hours of gameplay, you'd have to repeat that so many times to get to 6000 hours

Very different from someone that plays video games a few hours every day

cruano··on Red Dead Redemption 2 fan with 6k hours on Stadia begs for character transfer
If you are doing that either you are sacrificing your work, livelihood or personal relationships. It doesn't matter what for, it's an insane amount of time.

Not to mention the game in question has at most what... 100 hours of content ? it's not comparable in any way

cruano··on Google is shutting down Stadia
360? The cheapest Xbox is the current gen Xbox Series S, at £249.99.

And you can also finance that for £20.99/mo for two years.

And you can also re-sell it when you get tired of it.

cruano··on Google is shutting down Stadia
> Nobody was going to pay full price for games that evaporate the moment the servers shut down

Eh that's true for Steam, Epic, GoG, et al. If anything, regular people trust Google way more than those other companies since they use the browser/search engine/mail/youtube every single day

I do think it was doomed from the start, but only because the subset of people that have high speed internet, disposable income, like gaming and DON'T already own a PC or console is a very very small market

cruano··on Apple Car: Bad Idea After All
I mean, it's different bullshit at least no ?

Not having to deal with dealerships, actual software updates instead of just abandoning software (BlueLink anyone?), pushing maintenance from every 6 months to ~2 years

I don't own or want a Tesla, but its certainly different from the rest of the industry

cruano··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
But just look at that same behavior over time. Say you searched for car videos yesterday, and today you are searching for basketball videos.

Old youtube used to be very simple and recommend similar videos to the current thing you are watching, so you would get basketball videos when you were looking for basketball videos.

Now, it will do that for some but also put car videos in the recommendations as stuff you "might like". Not only that, it will probably recommend the same car video you watched yesterday because you liked it yesterday so surely you'll love it today too right ?

This only gets worse as you add more "unique" topics to your searches and follows. It doesn't matter what video I'm looking at, I get the same recommendations for all of them.

cruano··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
I mean, this are competitive games after all. Racing against Max Verstappen on iRacing is not an issue, it's what makes those games interesting. You don't ban Federer/Nadal out of tennis, you let people compete to raise the bar.
cruano··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
> they translate stuff and you can't know in the search results which video is in which language.

I think offering alternative titles for each language is on the creators, not youtube themselves

cruano··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
I got mugged a couple years ago, or attempted to: The thief asked for my phone, saw it was an iPhone and just gave it back.

That to me is worth the whole phone bricking thing. And it's also not like I've gone through a bunch of them, I got a 6S on release and a 12 pro when I felt it couldn't play video games anymore.

cruano··on Ask HN: When will big tech be taken down a notch?
> there's no real cost to manufacture and distribute software

Do you know where you are writing this? God, even if you managed to find people that are willing to sacrifice their >$100K/year for a good cause, "local storage" has both a start and a maintenance cost, especially "massive" ones.

And copyright is a legal issue, not a technological one

cruano··on Apple’s next big thing: A business model change
Yes, but they care about the long-term money-printing ability of the whole ecosystem, and reputation can very clearly hurt that e.g. Facebook
cruano··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest laptop I can buy for development
Between the screen and accessories this ends up being way more expensive than any used laptop that WILL outperform it while being way more comfortable. Not to mention if you don't already have a capable phone and/or a bunch of accessories.

The worst part is this kind of setup is always finicky to use and harder to debug, which is the last thing you want in a developer machine.

cruano··on Fake musicians: a million-dollar Instagram verification scheme
I mean, Michael B. Jordan is a good example of why you don't have a good example. Even if you share the name, you have to differentiate it somehow to be marketable.
cruano··on SoftBank’s losses reveal Masayoshi Son’s broken business model
Not saying I disagree but in my country, the minute Uber Eats started charging for delivery and stopped giving out subsidized free food was the minute a bunch of competitors popped up

So yeah, for a while it was only uber eats but they didn't maintain that lead without those subsidies that were (apparently) a net positive for consumers

cruano··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
I think most tech people went from considering intel-based macbooks as a splurge, to the single best value proposition for consumer laptops.

Before there were many tradeoffs for choosing a macbook, most of them around performance/cost, but all of those are gone when the base $999 macbook air beats way more expensive computers.

I'd recommend this machines to literally everyone that needs a laptop, which is something I can't say for the rest of Apple products or any other piece of tech for that matter

cruano··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
> the comment you replied to was about getting away from lock-in

The comment was about them giving up on Apple because "I can't see the value in it anymore", and he pointed out how the value proposition changed with the non-intel macs

Exactly which deal breakers do you mean? it literally says "otherwise my experience with them has been satisfactory" ?

cruano··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
> fund schools well enough that teachers don't have to pay out of pocket for basic supplies like chalk and paper

You mean funding the vacation plans of all the administration ?

cruano··on Apple M2 vs. AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U Performance in Nearly 200 Benchmarks
Have you ever dropped a plastic laptop ? if you think the aluminium enclosure it's just pretty then I don't know what to tell you
cruano··on Apple surpassed $3.5B in annual revenue from its ad network
If you don't use the App Store or an iPhone they don't track you, do you think I have a Facebook account? Well, I'm still getting tracked by them
cruano··on Apple M2 vs. AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U Performance in Nearly 200 Benchmarks
> But are they priced similarly?

Meaningless question when they don't sell the M2 chip separately

> Hmm .. Doesn't "for both" negate the argument

I guess "for each" would be better ? But OPs point still stands, if you put me on a race car you are not breaking any records no matter how good the car is

cruano··on Show HN: I made a writing tool that asks questions like Socrates
Good luck when google decides you infringed some TOS because you uploaded a youtube video with music playing on the background or some BS like that and just locks you out of all the services you registered with that feature
cruano··on Is El Salvador Up?
45.89% down, that's insane

I always thought it wasn't such a bad idea, it's a country reliant on remittances, and wire transfers and alternatives are expensive (I used to work at Xoom/PayPal)

The other thing is that it never was well adopted by the public. I visited the country in January and some restaurants mentioned which items you could and couldn't buy using bitcoin on the menu

cruano··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”

I'm sure they are not biased at all

cruano··on Google’s Nest will provide data to police without a warrant
I guess 0.00001% is still < 5%

Most people in tech still use @gmail addresses, do you think regular people bother to have their own private cloud for data storage ?

cruano··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
The time thing is the biggest takeaway for me, not only I spend less time overall on Instagram but I also feel way more "productive" (Weird word to use, but you know what I mean) as I actually look at every story from my friends instead of navigating through a bunch of spam from {SPORT} or {CELEBRITY}
cruano··on The Danger of Journaling Is Introspection
That last line is probably the one thing I love about facebook, the "5 years ago today" posts that show you little snippets of your past activity. You probably wouldn't go and actively look for them, but seeing them is always a nice surprise!

A while ago I built basically what you describe but via whatsapp instead of email [1] and I think those are the perfect interfaces for filling out a journal, so many people recommend writing "as if you were writing to a friend" and that makes it so much more natural than any app or website could.
