cruano··on Ask HN: Why are US tech workers so pro open borders?
Because it is the reason the US is a tech hub in the first place ?

No immigration means no concentration of talent, which means companies would just move to a country that allows that (e.g. Ireland) and they'll take their high-paying jobs with them.

BYD targets a different market. Tesla should compete with the likes of Polestar, Rivian, maybe Porsche if they dare but I'd take any of those before a Tesla any day of the week.

In the US*

In the rest of the world, with Korean-produced vehicles, they do much better

cruano··on Steam Frame
On the PlayStation VR 2, there is Resident Evil 4 and 8. I'd never cared for those games until I tried them in VR. I'd argue is more like a good game with decent VR support rather than a good "VR" game though. That's also the case for things like Hitman, No Man's Sky, Metro Awakening and such.

And then there are the racing sims. I find these are such an immersive experience it reaches an uncanny-valley type feeling for me, where my body is expecting G-forces that never come, or gets confused with the steering wheel not being the exact same size as my eyes are seeing. It's great though, and definitely recommended if you enjoy cars at all.

cruano··on Steam Frame
True, but you can just swap in a spare set of charged batteries and you are back online instantly.
cruano··on Steam Frame
> It adds a questionable improvement in graphics and immersion at the incredibly high cost of excluding yourself from the real world.

That's a feature for a good number of games, if not most. For example, Resident Evil 4/8 in VR are by far the best horror experiences I've had, and part of it is that you stop seeing your living room while playing.

> The motion controls in VR will also always be severely limited by the fact that you can’t see your surroundings.

There is zero chance that aiming with a controller is more intuitive than point-and-shoot. What I get from your comment is that the movement can be awkward which is absolutely true, but plenty of games have neat ways around that. And then there are games that require no actual movement, like racing games with a sim setup.

cruano··on iOS 26.2 to allow third-party app stores in Japan ahead of regulatory deadline
What bothers me is that despite all of that pain, they still let through a ton of low-effort app clones in their store, which sometimes even come up before the original ones. If you search for GTA you get a ton of lookalikes, some of which even use screenshots of GTA V which clearly aren't the actual game.

cruano··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
I got a razer blade that is around the same price as a macbook. At first it seemed like great build quality, but after replacing an inflated battery, an SSD that liked to shut off randomly and being blocked off latest windows due to the "old" CPU (this is a 2018-2019 laptop mind you) I've given up on it. Meanwhile my mom is still using my 2013 Macbook Air

cruano··on Ask HN: Why there's no email address portability like with phone numbers?
It took me about a year to move to my own domain, but it was a great opportunity to clean up 20 years worth of unused accounts, so a net positive I think.

I’ve kept my @gmail address as a backup, though I only check it about once a week now. Plus, I’m free to use it for any new random accounts I don't really care.

They only have to be consistently better than the competition, and they are, by far. I always look for reviews before buying anything, and even then I've been nothing but disappointed by the likes of Razer, LG, Samsung, etc.

It's like that kid that got expelled for creating a map of his school in Counter-Strike [1], due to fears of security threats. Not that I blame them, I could see people planning a robbery in Minecraft.

cruano··on Show HN: I made crowdwave – imagine Twitter/Reddit but every post is a voicemail
YouTube had video replies ages ago and it didn't take off.

The trouble with audio is the barrier of entry. By the time you've wrote your script and managed to record it and edit it you might as well have made a video.

I got the 512GB model and have been using it without any regard for storage for a couple of years. All my music is downloaded locally in lossless formats. I keep full-res versions of all my vacation pictures/videos and I also download a ton of crap, from videogames to movies.

I'm at 285GB right now.

The breakdown is 81GB for music, 56GB for pictures, ~40GB of download content on TV/Youtube/Audible and ~23GB of games.

I could _easily_ cut down on that. There's games I haven't played in a while, movies I've already watched, or even music I don't really listen to frequently enough to have it downloaded.

Safe to say I'll go for 256GB next time

cruano··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars in 2024?

Do you mean via USB ? Because that works flawlessly for me, even with the older lightning-port iPad version. Over wifi is almost always laggy though.

cruano··on Ask HN: Why can't modern smartphones play music smoothly?
Could also be your car, I know mine has issues and sometimes even errors out to a Windows XP message[1].

Although since you mention Audible, it might be about the length of the tracks or something like that.

cruano··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
Not OP but you do have to pay separately. Although as you say, that's a crazy amount for just 3 weeks. In my experience I was charged about $100 for two weeks of regular use + one roadtrip from Miami to Orlando and back.

Maybe it was just idle fees, that seems like it could go up by a lot if you leave the vehicle on the station:

>For every additional minute a vehicle remains connected to the Supercharger, it will incur an idle fee.

cruano··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
> I thought it’s pretty crazy to let people rent EVs without any training.

They send you a bunch of "Explore your upcoming rental" emails when you rent a tesla, with video tutorials [1]. I've rented plug-in hybrids before and had pretty much the same experience as you, but for a tesla rental I watched the videos and all worked well.

cruano··on Ask HN: Nice alternatives to Postman?
This completely depends on your use-case, but I've personally found that the edit and re-send [1] features of Firefox are enough for my purposes most of the time.
