hug of death?
craigkilgo··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
It's based on your workload you are using it for basically. So its not a set price.

Sailing, I was hoping it was a rowing metaphor.
craigkilgo··on Launch HN: Regatta Storage (YC F24) – Turn S3 into a local-like, POSIX cloud FS
How did you choose the name Regatta?

Does this work? This would be amazing.

100% the son. Did you see the documentary on that?
craigkilgo··on More than five whys and “layer eight” problems
Sometimes though if you track the problem all the way to layer 8, the origin of the problem has "resolved itself" i.e. left the organization, fired, retired, died, etc. Then you can solve the issue with no pushback.

Is TypeScript responsible for how performant VSCode is relative to other Electron apps? I always wondered how they figured it out and all other Electron apps struggle.

craigkilgo··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
I don't find it hard to go back (which I do if I use just my laptop). I do find it reminds me of the weird angle laptop keyboards force my shoulders and wrists into.
craigkilgo··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
This is my exact thought. I love it, but I'm about to retire my second one. It's almost worth just paying the price for a new one every couple of years though. I have two of the older Microsoft Natural keyboards from decades ago that I periodically switch to and they will probably last another 20 years.
craigkilgo··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
This is the correct answer.
craigkilgo··on Ask HN: How do you manage self-study?
Not sure this what you are looking for, but when I take certs I usually go with video and I have a 2 pass system: 1) Watch all video content straight through. 2) Take one practice exam/quiz. 3) Watch all video content a second time. On this pass I make notes and if possible take a quiz after each video. 4) Review notes. 5) Practice exams. As I uncover questions I get wrong, I add those specific things to the notes. 6) Review notes day of exam. Take exam.

This is super easy for if you just buy a course for a particular certification. You can "make your own" if its not really an exam by making a small outline or picking a particular video series and then grafting the series onto an outline and then making a schedule for how you will go over each outline item twice.

I always recommend the 2-pass system because of what I call the "coat-hook problem". Basically, you can't just memorize stuff that has no other connections to things you already know. So, in the first pass you are really just putting up the coat-hooks. All you need to get from that first pass is a broad overview of what the content is and hopefully you can get a feel for the shape of everything. The second pass is where you actually start learning the material, i.e. actually hanging some coats on the coat-hooks.

Hope this helps. It's just how I do things, not claiming its for everybody.

craigkilgo··on Universa tail fund returned 3,600% in March
The hedge fund in question DID provide those returns. The portfolio given at the end was an example of how you use the hedge fund as essentially a financial product for a larger portfolio.
craigkilgo··on TablePlus – Modern, Native Tool for Database Management
Totally agree. When I'm on Mac, I go with Sequel Pro, but on Linux DBeaver is unfortunately the best. It's not bad, its just way too cluttered. I am liking the direction Table Plus Linux is going.
craigkilgo··on Ask HN: Computer Science/History Books?
I read Phoenix Project first and then The Goal. I enjoyed both and I think that's the best order.

craigkilgo··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
Nope, I think that about sums it up.
craigkilgo··on Void Linux (musl) on the Huawei MateBook X Pro
"and is not a GNU project."

This is the first time I have seen actively avoiding GNU. Is this common? Reasons political?

craigkilgo··on The true story of the Amazon door desk (2011)
Is the implication that the purpose of the door desk was to merely APPEAR frugal? Or did it have some other original purpose entirely? I still didn't quite get that part.
craigkilgo··on NPM Bans Terminal Ads
Is there a package to convert all Internet ads to simple console messages? I would be down with that package.
craigkilgo··on Michael Crichton: Why Speculate? (2005)
I feel like I have noticed this for years and never realized it had a name. I honestly think it happens in almost every field.

craigkilgo··on In Soviet Union, Optimization Problem Solves You (2012)
A percentage of this effect is due to "restrictions" on manufacturing. i.e. you had to make things with a certain thickness of steel, etc. You see this effect with American goods too. You have avocado green fridges still running for 50 years or washing machines from the 1970's that are still running. Things don't last today because we have paper thin metal and various other cheap parts and there is no incentive to make a washing machine that lasts for 40 years.
craigkilgo··on Universal Basic Income Explained – Free Money for Everybody? [video]
Inflation being a monetary phenomenon is the technical definition of inflation. When you mention the 14% number, that is based on market price for basket of goods which is not technically inflation (under the definition used by economists, not the definition used by journalists).
